Overview

Many years ago, the papers of James S. Stewart were lodged in the library of New College, Edinburgh, by 'J.S.S.' himself under a twelve year embargo. Recently permission was granted for this embargo to be lifted and the material finally to be made available.
Among the papers were some exceptional set piece sermons-examples of work upon which James S. Stewart bestowed such labour, which he honed and polished. Readers who remember his distinctive voice, and those who have learned about this magnificent preacher, may now hear the vibrant accents of his passionate delivery through the printed word.
For twenty years the late James S. Stewart was Professor of New Testament Language, Literature and Theology, University of Edinburgh (New College). Former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (1963-64), he is considered to be one of the Kirk's greatest communicators of the Gospel.
As a scholar, family man and public figure, his may become a historic memory, a legend of a more spacious era of church life when men and women went on Sundays to 'hear' preachers of their day. This volume of sermons by James S. Stewart is offered as a lasting testament to his life and times.

This book is a treasure to read. Stewart, for many of us, has been a guiding light in the area of homiletics for nearly 3 generations. These sermons, delivered before the great war, from one of Scotland's greatest preachers, and certainly one of the great preachers of the last century, offers a clear picture of the majesty of God, the joy of being in Christ, and the assurance of the Presence of the Spirit in all aspects of life. These sermons and this preacher, little known by contemporary students of the Word, are a treasure chest of great preaching. No wonder, eh?, the Editor's of Preaching magazine (1999) consider Stewart the 'greatest preacher of the 20th century.' Further, the Editor of Preaching magazine (March-April 2007) considerd this volume one of the best books of 2006 in his annual review of best books in preaching - 2006! Not only are these sermons excellent in terms of style and structure, they are great literature too... No, they won't give us insight into 5 ways to a better career, or a more loving marriage, or promise us the heresy of our 'best life now!' This preacher will, however, with the Word, take the reader to the very Throne of God's Grace... What could be a greater blessing than this??...we have been inundated in our preaching with too much Therapy and too little Theology for daily life...these sermons offer a sound theology for the one who takes the Christian life seriously and joyfully! What a great book!!! I bought 5 copies to give to friends...

At long last! Another volume of sermons by James S. Stewart of Edinburgh (1896-1990). The book begins with a moving Memoir by his dear friend, and former parish minister,of 30 years, The Very Revd W.J.G.McDonald, and then moves into 30 previously unpublished sermons by this Preacher's Preacher! We can see why, after reading just a few of his sermons, the Editorial Board of Preaching magazine (1999)voted Stewart 'the greatest preacher of the 20th Century!' The sermons are followed by a short Afterword by an American Professor of Homiletics who was deeply touched by the life and ministry of JSS. This is a wonderful work and all in the preaching/parish ministry should read and reflect on the power of words contained in these sermons. This is JSS at his very best!!! The book also contains words of commendations by 10 gifted homileticians and parish pastors of international reputation (this alone should cause us to pause and take a hard look at this work)! All in all this is a book that will only improve with age. Thanks to Regent College Press for re-leasing this awesome book! 'Pick up and Read' this masterpiece that is as impressive in content as it is in appearance.
