Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite Wally The Whale by Stephen George is a delightful story set in the small town of Livingston in Camano Island, which lies in the group of islands called San Juan Islands. Cameron loves animals and one day after a storm, Cameron catches a baby whale. Cameron and his friends pull the baby whale out of the water. The baby whale, Wally, tells the kids that if they put him back into the water, he will always be their friend. They push him back into the sea. A year later, Cameron and his friends row into the middle of the bay in their small boat. They realize that they are going to get caught up in a storm. A huge whale comes near them and tells them that he is Wally, the baby whale who they put back into the water a year ago. Wally helps them to reach the shore safely. It is a beautiful story of friendship and teaches kids that they can become friends with animals. The story also shows kids to appreciate animals and how friendship with them can be fruitful and rewarding. The style of writing is descriptive and pulls young readers into the exciting lives of Cameron, Graham, Jeffrey, Serena and Becky. Wally the whale is adorable and adds to the excitement and pace of the story. The message of friendship, gratitude and helping during times of need is indeed very inspirational and will motivate kids to be kind to animals and nature.
My kids love this story and Wally. I want more sequels.
Well written adventure for both boys and girls. I'm looking forward to reading other stories by this author. You can tell he's raised kids himself and knows what they enjoy.
