Despite flashbacks to better times in Sara’s family, it is impossible to feel any sympathy toward her abusive father. Beatings inflicted on her mother have gone on for years. Sara’s brother chooses suicide over the emotional and physical abuse he endures. Sara herself is not physically harmed, but the strain of living with her super-critical, controlling father anymore is impossible. Her mom makes plans for the two of them to disappear, but then disappears herself. Terrified that something has happened to her mom, Sara doesn’t believe her father’s story of a “business trip”. Sara works on the mystery of finding out what has happened to her mom while balancing her dad’s craziness, school, a new boyfriend, and an old friend who is a good and constant reminder of her brother. Sara’s sleuthing brought me into the story. It’s interesting to see the steps she takes to track her mother’s plans. The author does a great job of creating a squeamish, dark sense of fear whenever Sara’s father is in the scene…or even if she just thinks about him. I felt like holding my breath. It was almost painful to read about his temper. The dialogue between Sara and Alex lightens up this dark story. Because Sara is so isolated, reading about the loyalty and help she gets from Alex and Zach lessens the horror of her situation. The final battle shows Sara’s strengths, but also highlights how much she loves her dad.

What She Left Behind was a great book in my opinion. It was quite a thriller and it kept me turning pages. In the beginning, Sara Peters moved back to Michigan with her violent father, mother, and older brother. Her brother ends up committing suicide and her dad becomes more violent to her mom. Her mom then decides to leave the home for good. Her mom plans to meet Sara at the Dairy Dreams to pick her up and run away, but she never shows up. Sara asks her dad where mom is and he says she’s away with work, which later on we find isn’t true. Sara tries her best to figure out where her mom is actually at and she starts finding her dad in suspicious situations that lead her to think that he killed her mom. Her dad finds her snooping around looking for clues to lead her to her mom but he kidnaps her before she can find anything. He throws her in their RV and they drive for miles until they finally reach a familiar place. Read the book to find out the ending!

I really don’t have that much to say about this book, so I’ll keep my review short and give a quick overview of the things I liked and what I didn’t like. What She Left Behind is one of those so-so reads. Overall, I enjoyed it and it has a really good story. It’s different in that it is sort of a thriller that keeps you guessing until almost at the end. There are clues that the possibility exists that Sara’s mom left without Sara, but there are also clues supporting the possibility that Sara’s dad murdered her mom. I mostly leaned towards the latter because those clues were the most. But whatever happened to Sara’s mom, I’m not gonna spoil it for you. You’ll have to find out what happened to her all on your own. Some would find the plot rather predictable, but I kinda enjoyed the cat-and-mouse twists the author had going. One thing is for sure: this is most definitely a suspenseful read. I mean, Sara’s dad is completely cuckoos and nerve-rackingly unpredictable. Can you say nut job? The suspense sure as heck kept me on the edge of my seat. And that’s about it. That’s what kept me hooked. The characters are somewhat unremarkable, and the romance sort of spoiled it for me. At first I thought the romance was only there to fluff up the plot, but at the end I saw the purpose of it. Sara’s reactions sometimes gave me whiplash. One moment she’s head-over-heels in love, and the next she’s sick with worry about her mom. It’s like she had an on/off switch. You’ll find her thinking and worrying about her mom’s disappearance, and just like that she’s instantly all swoony about Alex. Even at the end of the book I felt all “bleh” about her. But at least Zack and Alex were quite interesting, and Sara’s volatile father had more personality than she did, so between those three they kept my mind from drifting while reading. Anyhoo, I said I’ll keep my review to the point. This is really not a bad read, especially towards the end. The last half was definitely better than the first half. What She Left Behind is perfect for fans of Ten by Gretchen McNeil.

If you like Elizabeth Scott, I think you'll absolutely adore Tracy Bilen. WHAT SHE LEFT BEHIND is one of those stories that is morbidly beautiful. It is the harsh reality of a less than ideal life, threaded with moments of love and hope. I couldn't pull my eyes away from what was unfolding on the pages. I immediately connected with Sara and adored the healthy relationships in her life. I read this story with a rapid pulse and sweaty palms--praying that the last page would be just as good as the build-up. I wasn't disappointed.

I enjoyed this book a lot, but I thought it could have been better. The beginning seemed kind of rushed, and the middle could have been more eventful, but it was a pretty good story overall.
