The story opens with a high school graduation, and mystery about what Jillian saw the night she disappeared, and why she won't tell her two best friends what she saw. It picks up again ten years later in Washington, with Alexi's action as the lead character, a female firefighter, who disobeys orders to rescue a child despite equipment failure. Suspended, and in danger of losing her job, Alexi heads home to the Carolinas for her high school reunion, only to find her estranged mom's health is failing, her ex-boyfriend from high school has been attacked and is dying in the basement of her mother's home, and Hunter, the detective trying to solve the murder. A series of murders, attemps on her life, questions whether she is being framed for muder, or whether someone wants to kidnap her for information ensue. Multiple plot lines unfold - what happened during the fire in her home as a child, who tried to kill her in Washington, is it the same person trying to kill her here, what's wrong with her mom, what happened with her father and brother, why does Hunter's partner dislike her, what is causing the rivalry between Hunter and his brother Chad, what did the Senator do, etc? The romance between Alexi and Hunter builds gradually, and without the usual cliche instant attraction-instant sex of most modern romance novels. Kudos also for the smooth blending of Christian values, biblical quotes, discovery of faith and testimonials into the story. Unfortunately, lots of character development and character motivations get swept up and lost in the effort to resolve the story, and the key motivation/opening plot about what Jillian saw the night of the graduation, and who is behind the attempts on Alexi never gets resolved. Obviously setting up additional books in the series (at $7 each), but dissatisfying as a cliffhanger ending to this story. The main protagonist is caught, with rough mental health issue motivations, but why the person behind the attempt on her life in Washington would be motivated to do what he did is rushed, what happened with her father and whether he is involved is unresolved, the identy of the Senator's middleman controlling events is undisclosed, and a lot of backstory on characters is glossed over. Good suspense, interesting characters, but would have preferred clearer resolution instead of the cliffhanger questions left unsolved.

This is a fantastic book. It grips you from the very first page, and keeps you guessing until the very end. This is the first book that I've read by Lynette and I just bought the next two in the series. I can't wait to read them, as well as her other series.

I resent the fact you have to buy the next book in order to find out the ending of the first one. To me that's dirty pool. Not sure I will buy the next book. Otherwise I would have given it five stars.

Loved it. Loved they incorporated God

In my opinion, a book should have a beginning, a middle, AND an end. If an author ends a book with a cliff hanger, I won't buy another one of his/her books - how do I know book 2 will have an ending?

Very disappointing. Made it through to the end and there is no resolution. I won't bother with this author again.

I have to read book 2 to find out who the real killer is. No thank you, it wasn't that good

Totally enjoyed until I got to the last page, only to discover you have to purchase and read another book to get the ending of this who done it. I would have continued to read other works by this author, she's good, but this way of writing isn't my cup of tea!

Another great story by Lynette Eason. When the Smoke Clears, weaves suspenseful plot, deep characters, and a thread of romance that is sure to keep you turning each page. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that it ended. This is book one in the Deadly Reunions series, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this story takes us next. Definitely a 5 star read.

OHH my word!! this book is awesome, I was up until after 1 a.m. finishing this book. I was hanging on the edge of my bed for the ending! I loved this story and am now anxious for the next book! Alexia Allen has come home, after ten years of avoiding her mother and running from her horrible past, she has come home. It is high school reunion time, so it seems a good time to come home, plus her mother has started contacting her lately asking her to come home. Why? Why would a woman who threw her out, and forced her to leave after graduation, ask her to come home now? After living years with a husband who beat her, and the kids, who tried to kill them all why would Hannah Allen want her daughter to come home? Alexia struggles with accepting this new Hannah Allen, that her mother has become. Add that to the fact that arriving home, she finds a dead man in the basement, and is constantly under attack, and in danger of her life, Alexia is convinced coming home was not a good thing to do. I loved this book, I cannot state that too much. In my opinion this book is Lynette's best book, I just could not put this book down. There is so much action and the mystery is spine chilling, it will pit brother against brother and even brother against sister, and all the while you will be wondering who is behind all of it. Definitely a book that is deserving of a 5 star rating! Available February 2012 from your favorite seller of Revell Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group. After an unauthorized, calculated call to rescue to small child in a fire, where Alexia Allen almost lost her life due to equipment failure, she decides to attend her ten-year class reunion and to recuperate at her mother’s home while that incident is under investigation and her job is under consideration. Ten years earlier, the night Alexia graduated from high school, her friend, Jillian Carter, came running into the graduation dance with a haunted look on her face, out of breath, and mumbling that she saw something she shouldn’t have. She immediately plunged through the back door, never to be heard from for almost ten years, leaving Alexia and Serena Hopkins aghast, wondering what Jillian saw. Alexia left that night also, estranged from her family. Since Alexia’s return to her mother’s house, her life has been in danger and considered a possible suspect in a murder/arson case. She wonders if the equipment failure and the circumstances at home are possibly interrelated. When the Smoke Clears, by Lynette Eason, is an explosive suspense that includes murder, fires, stalking, sniper gunshots, kidnapping, secretive complicities, and one very handsome detective, Hunter Graham. I consider Lynette’s book a thriller, with twists and plots that are forever being rearranged due to unknown, outside influences. Lynette makes us privy to some of those secretive complicities, but not enough to understand the full scope. Alexia and Hunter are unaware of these outside influences that are actually fueling their fears and anxieties, as there seems to be no safe place to hide her. To ease the tension of the dangers that Alexia and Hunter find themselves in, Lynette throws in Graham Hunter’s mayoral candidacy dinner, Alexia’s attempts to reconcile with her mother, and a tensive romance trying to bud out from under the circumstances. The ease of Hunter and Selena’s faith puts Alexia on edge. What had God ever done for her? Where was He when she needed him? Surprises abound as the story evolves. Lynette’s book had me pumped with all the action, suspense, and danger. The characters’ interactions and relationships were real. The tension was palpable during the high intense episodes. This author knows how to create a moving story of suspense as well as interspersing the tenderness of the Lord’s interventions in unsuspecting places and people. It’s natural and real. My reaction at the end of the book: “I just can’t believe I have to wait for the next book!” When The Smoke Clears ends in an integrated fashion for a partial resolution, but it leaves you wanting more, more, and more, opening the door for a sequel! Fantastic ride for a great suspense/thriller. Fabulous writing from a superb author. Lynette is one powerful, plot-twisting, heart-pounding writer!! Alexia Allen is a stong, competent firefighter. So when she finds herself under investigation and on leave, she makes the difficult decision to visit her estranged mother and attend her high school reunion. Upon her return home, she finds a dying man in her mother's home and she is suddenly the person of interest in his murder investigation. It's not the first time this town has looked on her with suspicion and the past still haunts her. When Detective Hunter Graham seems to take a personal interest in keeping her under supervision, Alexia balks, but soons comes to appreciate his protection when further incidents arise. Will Alexia be able to clear herself of present and past suspicions? Will her budding romance with Hunter survive the accusations, incidents and danger?Lynette Eason is one of my favorite authors for Christian suspense/romance novels. When the Smoke Clears is the first book in the Deadly Reunions series and it did not disappoint. Eason's flawless writing combined with the mystery and suspense aspects of the plot kept me hooked throughout the whole story. Alexia's character was complex, well-developed and authentic. The story had plenty of closure and yet the epilogue now has me awaiting the next installment in the series. I recommend this book if you are looking for an inspirational, contemporary romance with plenty of suspense.Available February 2012 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Revell Publishers. Alexia Allen fights fires. When she has a brush with death while trying to save a child she is ordered to take leave while the incident is under investigation. She decides to attend her 10 year class reunion and stay at her moms house. As soon as she arrives trouble starts. Hunter Graham was drawn to Alexia in high school but she didn't seem to show any interest. Now ten years later he's Detective Graham and still finds himself drawn to her. Even when it seems she's in the center of all kinds of trouble, from murder to arson. Not to mention family secrets. Who is really behind all the trouble and will she survive long enough to actually find out? From beginning to end, When the Smoke Clears is loaded with non-stop action and suspense! I literally could not flip pages fast enough. I was totally enthralled with not only the story but the characters as well. The family dynamics in Alexia's family as well as Hunter's family we realistically portrayed. I was completely on the edge of my seat through the whole book and while the end is partially concluded (in a satisfying way), the door is wide open for the next book in the series. Which I can not wait to read!!! Two things came across to me while I was reading. One, no matter what we go through God walks through it with us. Always working in every situation. Two, that God can change hearts and forgiveness is part of that change. That's not always easy as we see in Alexia's case. I thoroughly enjoyed When the Smoke Clears and would highly recommend it. It's an edge-of-your-seat tale that once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down!!! It's Book 1 in the Deadly Reunions Series. This was an intense story with alot of mystery, intrigue, suspense and some romance. It was a story I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see what would happen next. And it isn't often that you don't know "who did it", but this story really keeps you guessing! I liked it alot!! My only regret is that book two in the series isn't out yet, so I can pick up where this story left off. There are 3 girls who are graduating from high school and who have been friends forever. On the night of graduation one of them sees something she shouldn't and flees in the night, not telling her friends where she is going or what she saw. Fast forward 10 years and you find one of the girls as a "smokejumper" who after a near death experience with a fire, finds herself taking time off for an incident that is under investigation. She goes back home after 10 years for a reunion and things really start to happen. You have a mother Alexia needs to learn to love, a murder she needs to prove she didn't do, and a handsome detective she needs to try not to fall for. There is trouble following her wherever she goes. You have murder, arson, forgiveness and love all rolled up into one week in the life of Alexia. Yes, just one week, but my oh my what a week you will live through as you read this book. I loved the day and time sequences in this story. I also loved the spiritual message woven throughout its pages and the verses that tied it all together for me were, "When I am afrraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I Trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?" (Psalm 56) Detective Hunter said it well, "bad stuff happens. It's a fallen world. . . God's not picking on you (Alexia) . . . But he wants to be there for you to get you through it." The author did a fantastic job on this story and left the door wide open for its sequel. I can only say, "get busy Lynette Eason! I am anxious to read the next story in this series!". I knew I was going to like her book when I read her dedication page and her beginning verse before her story started. Give yourself some time when you start this book, because you will have a hard time putting it down until you finish.Paperback: 352 pagesPublisher: Revell (February 1, 2012)ISBN-10: 0800720075ISBN-13: 978-0800720070

What a fantastic Romantic Suspense novel! Not only was it packed with romantic tension, but there were twists and turns all through the book. The hero was yummy and the way he related to Alexia was endearing. Gotta love a man who wants to keep his woman safe, right? One thing I loved most about this story was that I didn't know who was behind the killings, and at the same time I love that there will be another book in the series that ties with this one. Talk about leaving a trail of red herrings and leading the reader on a bit of a goose chase! Great job there. And the fact that Alexia even looked guilty herself on a number of occasions was sheer brilliance. The ending left me a bit speechless, but I like that, too. There were many characters in the story I could relate to because the author made them feel so human. I understood Alexia's disillusionment with life based on her childhood pain, and Chad's issues regarding rejection based on his divorce. I loved how God put so many people in her path to reach out to her until her heart softened on a spiritual level. That aspect of the story was very well done and felt natural. I can't understand the extreme hatred her father had toward her, but maybe that will be revealed a bit more later. There is certainly potential to explore that more in future installments. The romantic elements in this story were particularly yummy. I loved that there were several kissing scenes and various romantic situations. The best part was it didn't all happen at the end. Hunter played a big role in Alexia's healing, and that part of their relationship certainly helped her learn to trust a man, and one man in particular. I was feeling the love and the heat between them, but it never scorched me in a negative way. It was a warm experience for me as a reader. (Just using a bit of firefighter lingo to fit with the theme.) Anyway, I really enjoyed this story!

Hate books that you spend all that time reading, and now you have to get another book to find out the ending!
