Joyce Maynard has wonderful phrases and clusters of words that capture that perfect thought or feeling, that I may have thought but wouldn't be able to nail down with words. She writes in a very true to life way, not excluding the "real" and not so pretty emotions, from her story. This is a book I would own, if not only to reread, but highlight the phrases that spoke to me.

Maynard is a good writer, but if you are a depressed person, do not read this book. And even if you aren't depressed, you can be sure you will be after reading it.

Maynard does a decent job of holding this story together for a while... Then bizarre, unnecessary things begin to happen and the novel becomes mired in melodrama. An ok read for a beach day or sick day, but the story won't stay with you.
