About the Author

Trevor MacDonald started his blog, www.milkjunkies.net, to share his experiences of transitioning, becoming pregnant, and breastfeeding with the use of supplementary donated human milk. Since 2011, milkjunkies.net has received over half a million visitors.

Trevor founded the first online support group for transgender people interested in pregnancy, birth, and breast or chestfeeding. He has initiated and helped to design and carry out a study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research on the experiences of transmasculine individuals with pregnancy, birth, and infant feeding.

He received international media attention in 2013 when his application to volunteer with his local chapter of La Leche League, a worldwide breastfeeding support organization, was blocked on the grounds of his gender identity. He successfully campaigned for a change to LLL's policy in 2014.

Trevor is a Huffington Post featured blogger, and has appeared as a speaker and workshop leader at conferences such as Yonifest (with Ina May Gaskin and Michel Odent); the Philadelphia Trans Health Conference; the Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health; the Canadian Association of Midwives; and the International Lactation Consultant Association, to name a few.

He frequently presents educational sessions for church groups, university courses, LGBT youth groups, and health care workers.

Dr Giles was appointed to the Media and Communications Department of the University of Sydney in June 2005 and has held positions during this time as Postgraduate Coursework Coordinator, Degree Director of Media Practice, Publishing and Health Communication and Associate Dean for Postgraduate Coursework. She was Chair of Department throughout 2014 and 2015.

Reviewed by Scila Colombo for Readers' Favorite Trevor MacDonald was once a woman, now a man. When he and his husband decide to start a family, they begin a unique journey through pregnancy and childbirth that will take them face to face with all the typical questions new parents are familiar with: should we have our baby at the hospital or in the intimacy of our home? Should we breastfeed or use baby formula? And where to find human milk on sale? Where's the Mother? is a unique memoir about being a breastfeeding parent and a transgender man, probably not an easy book to read, but definitely one of the most honest and interesting, well written and coherent. Trevor MacDonald is a very smart person who wrote an extremely intelligent book; past the usual habit to educate people about gender-related topics, he simply opens the doors of his house, introduces you to his family, his children, and tells us his own story with such disarming candor. Where's the Mother? leaves you with a lot of questions in your mind: for instance, how can he possibly cope with gender dysphoria and go through pregnancy and childbirth? A man breastfeeding, how society can accept that? But as you read it, everything simply falls into place. Trevor's honesty guides the reader through the tough path of understanding and accepting what we think we can't explain to ourselves; that breastfeeding is the most natural thing no matter who does it. This book will challenge many readers out there, at least those who will venture into reading about such a controversial topic.
