The terrifying king of hell...

As a boy, Abyssian “Sian” Infernas had his heart shattered by a treacherous fey beauty who died before he could exact vengeance. Millennia later, a curse has transformed him into a demonic monster—just as she’s been reincarnated. Sian captures the delicate but bold female, forcing her back to hell.

Meets his match.

Princess Calliope “Lila” Barbot’s people have hated and feared Abyssian and his alliance of monsters for aeons. When the beastly demon imprisons her in his mystical castle, vowing revenge for betrayals she can’t remember, Lila makes her own vow: to bring down the wicked beast for good.

Can two adversaries share one happily-ever-after?

As Calliope turns hell inside out, the all-powerful Sian finds himself defenseless against his feelings for her. In turn, Lila reluctantly responds to the beast’s cleverness and gruff vulnerability. But when truths from a far distant past are revealed, can their tenuous bond withstand ages of deceit, a curse, and a looming supernatural war?

Wicked Abyss

  • Sylvan Castle

    Eleven years ago . . .

As King Saetth leisurely wiped blood off his sword, Lila choked down her fury.

Seated upon his throne, he took his time, keeping everyone in suspense. With two executions complete, only one trial remained.

Would she follow her parents’ fates?

Through one of the throne room’s towering windows, a ray of sunlight beamed over the king. His blond locks and his ornate crown—a wreath of gilded evergreen branches—seemed to glow. Even the sun wanted to touch him.

For all of her thirteen years, Lila had been just as enamored of him.

Off to the side, whispers sounded from her backstabbing royal cousins.

“Saetth’s about to behead his child fiancée!”

“The foulmouthed brat got used to being the king’s favorite.”

“Why isn’t the little bitch crying?”

“Or begging for her cursed life?”

Crying or begging? As if. Lila faced Saetth with her chin up and shoulders back, her pampered appearance belying her fortitude.

The perils of this fey court had honed her mettle. Learning from the mistakes of others had sharpened her acumen.

Yet nothing could stifle her unfeylike temper; after all, she’d been betrothed to Saetth since her birth, raised to become the queen of this realm. Rumor even held that she was a princess reincarnated.

Fate wanted her to be a queen.

Lila had worn a purple silk gown for this occasion; the color was royal—and defiant.

As the castle’s clock tower tolled, Saetth finished cleaning the weapon he always carried, the Ancestors’ Sword, the unifying symbol of their royal line. He raised the blade to the sunlight, eyeing the edge with his piercing blue gaze.

Her earliest memories were of sighing over his handsome face, imagining him as her husband and her dollies as the subjects they protected.

Yet now her king suspected Lila of treason?

How could her coldhearted parents have plotted against such a powerful ruler? They’d foolishly trusted an informer, leaving their only child’s life hanging in the balance.

Secrecy equals survival in this court.

They’d never cared about her—never pretended she was more than a valuable bargaining chip—which was one of the reasons she’d bonded so strongly with Saetth, who’d at least shown her attention. . . .

He sheathed his sword. Peering down at her, he began her trial with one question: “Why shouldn’t I believe you were involved in your parents’ plot to steal my crown?”

Lila pinned his gaze with her own uncanny one. Her defense consisted of eight words: “Because it still sits upon your godsdamned head.”

    Stunned silence reigned.

Saetth’s shock turned to amusement. “And that is why you remain my betrothed, Calliope of Sylvan, the queen of my heart.” He laughed, his gaze seemingly warm. “If there was ever a girl born to rule, you are she, cousin. But I too was born to rule, and I’ve kept this crown for millennia because I allow no threats to fester around me.” His smile disappeared as if it’d never been. “I hereby exile you from our woodland kingdom.”

Leave her beloved Sylvan? Lila would almost rather die. The forests were what separated the Sylvans from the other fey. The splendor of those great trees was equaled only by the shining, meticulous order of life at court.

Just two weeks ago, at a ball in her honor, the lights from a thousand candles had reflected in her jewels as Saetth had led her out to dance. The next day she’d run through the woods alongside bounding deer.

Separating her from this place would be like draining her veins of blood. “To where?”

    “The mortal realm.”

Gasps sounded; some of her cousins tittered. He might as well have sentenced her to hell.

She would go from proudly displaying everything that made her a Lorean to hiding her very species from prying mortal eyes. From the order the fey so cherished to human chaos.

Saetth said, “We’ll see if my hothouse rose can survive among primitive humans.”

Lips drawn back from her teeth, she said, “Careful, cousin, this hothouse rose intends to flourish and grow sharp thorns.”

    More gasps.

Saetth’s eyes flickered with excitement. He leaned down and said, “I am counting on it.”

“And if the fey-slayer finds me, what then?” Rune Darklight, a homicidal archer and one of the Møriør, was murdering the Sylvan line of succession. Lila was one of only fourteen left.

This castle had a barrier to keep Møriør out; she’d be vulnerable anywhere else.

“Test your new thorns against him,” Saetth said. As if any of the monstrous Møriør could be fought! “If you’re truly the queen I deserve, you’ll figure out something, I’m sure.”

“How long until I can return?” Six months? A year?

“Should there come a time when you can prove your loyalty to me through great personal sacrifice, I will provide you the chance to take your rightful place by my side. Until then, wait for my word. . . .”

I love this series but this book was a little disappointing. Storyline was good but most of the book was erotica (which is fine if that's what the intent was). Historically this series has been plot driven not driven by sex scenes so a lot of skipping ahead took place to find out more about the alliances and ascension. Previous books have had great sex scenes but the story was the star and it was reversed in this installment.

Loved the book, however, was hoping for more Nix!

This book is riveting and excruciatingly suspense filled drama from the getgo. From the banishment of a selfish young princess to the tale of destructive primordial king. The battle of the wits between the sexes & the species is so on with these two. You begin to pray they don't take each others heads off during the game. But they learn each others and triumph more in the end than either would've thought imaginable. This book is a definite read for the followers of this series because Kresley Cole weaves stories to a dramatic storylines and happy endings to make any sane person wish they were the characters. Good luck and best of reading to everyone!!!

As always, an amazing read. I love the play on my favorite childhood tale, Beauty and the Beast. This might have been my favorite one yet out of the IAD series.

Sweet Ruin blew me away with all the new wonders it introduced to us in the Immortals After Dark World and and to say that I was excited to read Wicked Abyss would be an understatement. I was a bit obsessive for awhile there and while it didn't blew me away like Sweet Ruin, it was still wonderful to read. Wicked Abyss was downright amazing and I loved every minute of it! Every time I think Ms. Cole can't possibly write another bada*s heroine to top the last one, she proves me wrong and she did that with Calliope too! This fairy princess might not have actual fighting experience but her mind is brilliant and devious and as deadly as an weapon she could wield. It was my favorite part of her - I just loved her cunning intellect, but there was more that I loved about her than that. I loved Calliope's strength, confidence, determination and her fierceness. Calliope is without a doubt one of my new favorite females in this series, but I know she will definitely not be the last, not with this author! There could not have been a more appropriate title for this book than Wicked Abyss because man, oh man, is Abyssian wicked! He might be cursed with his demon form, but that doesn't mean he's any less sexy and truth be told I love him way more in that form than in his human one. Of course I loved Abyssian for more than just that though. Yes, he can be a grouchy, cringe-worthy jerk at times, but he can be playful and fun too. He has a soft, vulnerable side as well that he completely ripped my heart out with. Abyssian's so sweet and loyal and he would do absolutely anything for his mate. I couldn't not love him even if I tried - he's just wonderful and I know he'll steal your heart like he stole mine! Wicked Abyss felt like it had a little bit of everything and it reminded me of so much. There were times when I thought of Hades and Persephone and of Cinderella, but mostly it was like Ms. Cole's own tale of Beauty and the Beast although I have to say she did it better because everything I ever wanted in that story, she made happen. But don't get me wrong, it was still very much the Immortals After Dark World. You had the steamy, sexy times, the love/hate relationship, the bada*sery, the humor, the romance, and the love and heart that this whole series breathes. I started reading Wicked Abyss and I never wanted to stop - I only did when I absolutely had to. I wanted to get to the end, but at the same time I didn't and I felt that way when I actually finished it. I was so happy to see the conclusion, but I'm also sad because I can't be in the Immortals After Dark World again until the next book. I just love this book and series so much - they're both incredible and I'll never, not ever get enough! Wicked Abyss can be read as a standalone, although I would recommending reading them in order. It's told mostly from Abyssian and Calliope's POV, they do get their happy ending, and oh, I can't wait to see what happens next! ~ Sonja, 5 Stars

I go into every Kresley book thinking she cant possibly top the last couple.. started with Emma & Lachlan and then Carrow & Malkolm and then for sure Lanthe & Thronos... but DANG I love love love Sian & Lila!!! Of course we continue to be happily manipulated by Nix too. But seriously this leading lady is so bada$$, Lila has no powers but she is crafty.. probably why this lowly human respects her so much. If you haven't read this (or even if you have ) BUY THIS.. totally worth it!

Immortals After Dark is a wonderful series written by the talented Kresley Cole. I have been a fan of the series since about book five. So, I am always impatiently waiting for the next book. This is a series that you can jump right into, but you will want to go back and read from the beginning because she has so many wonderful characters and stories. Wicked Abyss, is a take on the Beauty and the Beast, story. Sian lives in a magical mansion and has a terribly cure places upon him that makes him utterly hideous to look at. His attitude matches his looks. Lila is a beautiful princess who is held captive by the beast. They both have flaws and a hard time listening to each other. There is war, blood, death, fallen kingdoms, love, hate, and humor all within the story. I don't believe in spoilers, but I think it is safe to say that you can always count on Cole to give you an ending that is filled with the warm and fuzzies. I read this book in one sitting. I could not put it down! That is one of the things I enjoy most about Cole's books. There is never a moment where I feel like I can put the book down for a little while. I have to know what happens next or I will die! You can always count on Kresley Cole to make you laugh, cry, and swoon in the same chapter! Read the book. Read the series. Read the author. They are all great! Happy reading! Lisa :)

Wicked Abyss is book 18 in the Immortals After Dark series. I adore this series and couldn't wait to get my hands on this installment when I heard it was inspired by Beauty and the Beast. Add in fairytale retellings to a book and I need it. Kresley Cole books are always on my must get as soon as possible so I was happy to see my library got the audiobook for this one in! Princess Calliope Barbot (aka Lila) was cast out by the fey and working at Disney in the human world when she gets approached by Nix and asked to spy on the hell king, Abyssian Infernas. With no real say in the matter, Lila winds up getting kidnapped and deposited into the hands of Abyssian (aka Sian) before she knows what is going on. While yes, they are mates, Sian is carrying a huge grudge against Lila for something she did in a previous life to him so this isn't exactly a good thing. I was kind of worried he wouldn't be able to get past the betrayal since quite a bit of the book he enjoyed tormenting her and being cruel. I could see the parallels to Beauty and the Beast, and while I'm glad KCole made the story her own, I wasn't a huge fan of Sian and his actions. Lila had so much going against her I felt bad for her a good portion of the novel. I was curious to see if/how they'd be able to put the past behind them and if they would be able to enjoy their mate-hood. After reading these for so long, we're at book 18 now folks, I do have to notice a trend in some of the books in this series. What I'm talking about in several of the novels is the leading lady will get captured and held prisoner by the love interest who doesn't exactly treat her wonderful, yet they grow closer as each page turns and he gets nicer then they wind up falling in love. I'm not a huge fan of the repeat plots but I haven't really been bothered by it too much since the characters, settings and the character's history are quite different. Another thing I noticed and really missed were all the characters we normally see in a slightly bigger role that were basically MIA this installment. I love Nix and the Valkyries and was sad to see them not play a larger part. All in all though, this installment was good and if you're a fan of Paranormal Romance and/or love previous books in this series you'll enjoy this book.

This was so incredibly good!  I think I love Cole’s demon’s the best out of all her characters.  Abyssian being the primordial demon takes the cake.  I mean seriously you can’t get any more badass than that. This is the first of Cole’s books that I have listened to via audiobook.  Robert Petkoff is an excellent narrator and I had no problem immersing myself into this world. This is one of those series that I want to start over from the beginning are read over and over again just so I can revisit everyone and remember all of the nuances going on.  Not only does each book have its own story, there is a larger story as a whole moving along with each book. There are so many characters that have yet to find a mate, and of course, the big one is going to be Nix.  Now with the Morior in play the ascension could go either way. And with Wicked Abyss we get a peek at some possible new matches, I can’t wait to see the Dragons story. As always Cole spun a tale with a spirited, intelligent, quick-witted, and sassy heroine who isn’t going to take crap from her high handed demon.  The banter between the two was terrific.  I loved Lila and she was just what Abyssian needed.  They melted the pages. I am giving Wicked Abyss 5 Boundless Stars, I loved it and I can’t wait for the next story.

I have to say that this book ranks up there almost as high as my favorite of Sweet Ruin! Not quite as good for me just because I absolutely love Jo from Sweet Ruin but Lila was a pretty close second place! I wasn't sure about this one at the start. Sian just seemed to be a giant jerk and Lila seemed to concerned with going "home". But then you see what happened to Sian in the past. And how Lila was thrown basically to the wolves over the actions of her parents. I was still iffy about Sian though because he couldn't seem to move past what happened in his past. He blamed Lila for things she did in a different incarnation, not what she would do in the present. But their interactions together, complete with Lila's snarkiness? I LOVED it!! Lila made the whole book for me! She never lets herself get completely down, she always pushes herself to the next step knowing that she has to in order to survive. And her attitude with people who like to talk down to her is great! And the way Sian brings himself around in the end and redeems himself? It was great! Definitely well worth the read! And the author still manages to tell their story and push the main story ARC for the series along with it!
