We got this book for our teenage daughter, who has been playing a lot of chess online, because she wanted to learn more about the game. It has helped her but really helped me more as I am a total chess idiot (tried to learn twice, once in law school when trying to learn anything else was insane)and this helped me understand the game better and begin to learn to strategize. I like that the author doesn't "talk down" to us novices and writes in simple language without unnecessary technical terms. I also like the diagrams that show various moves and the results of each. I'm glad my husband saw this book and grabbed it.
Basic tactics are organized into 14 chapters based on each type of tactic. Would also recommend a book on Chess Opening Traps (opening tactics) to go along with the basic tactics book. This is one of the better books on tactics.
