The story was different, but the cruelty to animals was just horrible. It also had some truth to it as far as humans react to things. I don't know if I would suggest you read this or definitely was a downer, yet I kept on reading. If you can handle the abuse to innocent animals, then you might want to read this one.

This is by far the worst, most depressing book I have read in years. I could not wait to get it over with! The attitude of the characters to the animals in their care and each other is not anything like that of anyone who ranches in Montana.

An outstanding novel! I may be mistaken but I believe this book won an award from the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association. The setting is a small town in the high plains of Montana. The sheriff has married a local girl with a questionable past. When he tries to do the right thing regarding a local rancher whose cattle herd is dying of starvation he finds himself at odds with the local ranchers. I couldn't put the book down. Clair Davis' description of the town, the people, and the environment reminds me a lot of two of my other favorites, Cold Mountain and Snow Falling on Cedars. Hope she writes another novel soon.
