The great story was here, the familiar characters were written in...but somehow the writing style was different, the rich story line and interaction of the recurring characters was lackluster compared to her previous work. I felt like I 'missed' the Zailer and Waterhouse that I have loved reading about. The transitions were choppy and unnecessary, when there could have instead been more detail. And there were some bits where you were just left hanging about some of the characters, like it just cut them off with the smallest of comments, and no actual resolution, which is not typical of Ms. Hannah's usually amazing work. I hope this is not indicative of the series going South, I have very much enjoyed it to this point!

When a controversial columnist is found murdered, the police are stunned at the staged scene. The man is tied to a chair by his arms and legs and packing tape is wound around his face with a knife affixed to the tape in front of his mouth. Although he had made many enemies with his hateful comments, who would be mad enough to kill him? Nicki Clements had corresponded via email with a man she thought was the columnist but was it really? She acted suspicious and was called in for questioning. Nicki was a pathologist liar but the police felt she was connected to this somehow. This was one of the most confusing books I have ever read and is one I do not recommend. I kept reading hoping it would get better but it did not.

check out the full review at Kritters Ramblings Nicki is married, but not completely happy and is guilty, but the reader doesn't know what she is guilty of in the beginning. At the same time a controversial columnist is found dead in his home with many clues at his murder and no leads. Nicki gets tied up in the murder investigation, but the reader knows that her guilt isn't to the murder, but we don't know for quite some time until all the clues start to come together. The chapters alternated between Nicki's point of view and the murder investigation with columns from the victim interspersed. I loved that these two things were kept separate via chapters - it helped get into each story line at a time. The investigation got a little hectic and confusing so I read that chapter a little slower because of all the moving parts and detectives, it was just a lot to take in where Nicki's chapters went smoother.
