Women and Adversity, Saluting 23 Faithful Suffragists, is the third in my Women and Adversity series. They feature lesser-known suffragists, women who fought for equal rights, and the right of women to vote. As in Honoring 23 Black Women and Recognizing 23 Notable Mothers, these brief sketches are not biographies. The books can be study guides and references for students, prompts teachers use to help motivate students, and fascinating reading for book lovers.

About the Author

Jo Ann Mathews grew up in Joliet, Illinois, and taught English and Spanish in high school before she became a full-time freelance writer. This is her third book. Her first, Women and Adversity, Honoring 23 Black Women was published in February 2020. Women and Adversity, Recognizing 23 Notable Mothers was published in May. These three are based on her blog, aptly named Women and Adversity that she’s written since 2014. She lives with her husband, Steve, in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. They have two grown sons.
