This was my first read through the city of God and I really enjoyed the book. Augustine provides a compelling rebuttal against those in Rome who claimed that the fall of Rome was due to the Christian religion. He also establishes the reliability of Christianity against the prevalent Stoic and Platonic ideas of the time. Beyond its impact for its own day, the work is strikingly relevant for the American church which seems to be wrestling with many of the same issues as Rome was in the 5th Century. This copy of the book however was not as good as the book itself. It wasn't horrible, but there were many typos throughout the book. It appears that the book may have been scanned and the scanner occasionally had difficulty making out the words. Greek words sometimes appear in a Greek font, however this is rare. They more often are just illegible. One additional problem that I have begun to have, is that the book is no longer opening on my nook. It is opening up in nookstudy so I can still use it for class, but that is still a disappointment. I do not know if this is a problem with my nook or the file itself. All of my other books are still opening up in my nook. I have now bought the Barnes and Noble Essential Reading version and find it much nicer.
