Overview

Would you sacrifice your humanity to live free from pain and suffering?

Conservationist Anja Lapin always stood firm against her father’s profiteering. But in her wildest dreams, she never guessed his tech company would stumble on an algorithm enabling humans to digitize their bodies and secure artificial immortality.

Before Anja can stage a protest, terrorists take out the research team, along with her father. Billions adopt the new technology in record time, lured by an eternity free from pain and filled with pleasure—even if it means losing a few pieces of their identity.

Anja finds she’s one of the last two flesh and blood humans remaining on Earth. But while her worries turn to the future of consciousness, her father’s rival plots to hijack the network of digitized people and claim ultimate control.

Can Anja counter the attack and safeguard a brave new stage of human evolution?

Zero Percenters is a metaphysical science fiction novel. If you like exploring futuristic possibilities, artificial intelligence, and the meaning of life, then you’ll love Scott T. Grusky’s intriguing adventure.

A Thrill Ride thru Human Consciousness Scott Grusky’s ZERO PERCENTERS takes you on a trip in both senses, on a journey across the earth in real time and on a speculative, mind-expanding leap through consciousness. California, Romania, Chile, Germany, Argentina, Colorado, New Hampshire, New York, Massachusetts — this is the itinerary as the novel’s action cuts here and there over a period of six months in 2024. Grusky obsessively records place and time even as he fantastically alters the reality we’re familiar with. Humanity is almost fully digitized by now (i.e., many billions of people have become “zero percenters”) except for a couple of biological holdouts. What happens to them and why? And even when no “biologicals” remain and all of us are digitized, are we really ALL digitized, i.e., did the master algorithm really comprehend our full humanity? Did it not leave something out? The novel’s forward movement depends on these questions. The author, Scott Grusky, is known to be an avid surfer, and his enthusiasm for the ride comes out in his extended descriptions of the outdoor pursuits of his characters — mountain climbing, skiing, and, yes, flying. His protagonist Anja goes over Horseshoe Falls in New York as a dolphin and survives the plunge by morphing into a frigatebird and flying out of it. Didn’t think that was possible? Just wait. If you are into shape shifting, if you are thinking about shuffling off your mortal coil and going all digital all the time, if Utopia disturbs you even though you long for it, if the ambiguities of AI intrigue you — this novel will definitely appeal to you. “A soft, steady hum of loving kindness enveloped the entire planet.” Really? And then what? ZERO PERCENTERS may be a strange and oblique meditation on the end of the human species as we think we know it. On the way it’s an exhilarating ride.

I enjoyed reading “Zero Percenters: A Novel” by a brilliant, imaginative and very talented writer, Scott Grunsky, who, in my opinion, has a refreshing new style in writing dystopian novels. I enjoy books with reasonably short chapters with a mix of longer chapters. I also like a medium to a fast-paced story that this author delivers in an easy to read and thought-provoking manner. I felt this book is a highly creative and unique story that is told in the first person by an entity of artificial intelligence. The entity explains, “Before I was assigned to Anja, I possessed the sum total of all accumulated human knowledge or, so I was told. I gradually learned that this statement wasn’t entirely true. I had to practice unlearning. I had to change from logic-based to witness based.” I also very much enjoyed the way this inventive and visionary author describes a myriad of adventuresome events and the twists and turns in this great story where most everyone acquires digital immortality, freedom from pain and freedom to explore in amazing new ways and forms. I read this intriguing story fast and enjoyed the way the author presents it through the A.I. entity and shows the reader digital technology changes and breakthroughs occur very quickly and made myself a believer that dramatic changes to humanity can happen overnight and the immediate issues humans have to deal with. All in all, I enjoyed this book very much and I felt it was very well done.
