This makes “Hey, baby, what’s your sign?” take on a whole new meaning… My thanks to my contacts at Pegasus Books, Iris Blasi, Katie McGuire, and Maia Larson, for my advance reading copy of this book! Rock on! In this masterful novel, Sam Wilson explores the evils that plague society from a different viewpoint. In this world, race, sex, sexual preference, religion—do not matter. The world is still a divided mess, but this time it is under which astrological sign that one is born… Nothing else seems to matter. Parents must try to have their children born under their astrological sign or it can cause major difficulties. One could be forced to move or to give up a job or social standing because their child is born under the wrong sign... Daniel Lapton, a Capricorn and thus a wealthy, privileged person learns that he has a daughter. His father had sent the woman, a Pisces and servant to his family, to another city and covered up the fact. Now Daniel is tracing his daughter’s path, hoping to find her. What he discovers is deeply disturbing… In the city of San Celeste, Rachel Wells, a Libra and employee of JiffyMaids, arrives late to her work for her most recent client. She discovers her ersatz employer, Chief of Police Peter Williams, a Taurus, dead at the bottom of a ditch in his yard. As she dials 911 the killer kidnaps herwhile fleeing the scene… SCPD Detective Jerome Butler, also a Taurus, takes the case. There will be more murders to follow. Butler is given a sidekick he does not want, an astrological profiler named Lindi Childs. She is an Aquarius. His superior is very instant on following the evidence the astrologer discovers, even if it is contrary to facts discovered by police work… This is a large book, 444 pages, and yet it kept me engrossed so much that I read it in one go! The action is hot and heavy, and even with the harsh message on what prejudice does to our society, it is never boring. There are two stories, Daniel Lapton’s search for his daughter and the murders. They come together like the ingredients of a cocktail, mixed to perfection by master mixologist Sam Wilson! I give the book five starts. It is tempting to ding it a bit for what I consider excessive language, but the story is riveting! One of the best I have read in a while! Quoth the Raven…
