Our Love is Everlasting for These 5 Vampires

Vampires are immortal; not only in mythology, but in books. No matter how many trends ebb and flow, the allure of the mysterious, tortured, sexy vampire reigns supreme. Here are 5 of my favorite vampires in romance novels (spoiler: they’re bloody wonderful).

Zhadist (Lover Awakened, Black Dagger Brotherhood #3 by J.R. Ward)
If I could pick every single book in J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series, I would, but #3 is my favorite of them all because Zhadist is the darkest, most tortured, most wonderful hero of all time. After a century as a slave, Zhadist has embraced his freedom and identity as a savage force of vengeance. The cruelest of his brothers, Zhadist wants nothing more than to exact vengeance against those who hurt him…until he meets Bella—and then he wants nothing more than her.

Matthew (A Discovery of Witches, All Souls #1, by Deborah Harkness)
Where vampires go, there must also be witches. Diana Bishop is descended from a long line of powerful witches, but wants nothing to do with magic. But then she summons an ancient text, and along with it, her destiny—and her love, Matthew, a vampire geneticist (a smart nerd/sexy vampire? Who could ask for anything more?). Future books involve time-travel, adventure, and of course, a hell of a lot of romance.
Dracula (Dracula, by Bram Stoker)
Nothing beats the original, as far as I’m concerned, Bram Stoker’s epic novel in which Jonathan Harker becomes Dracula’s prisoner and the vampire masquerades as a Count to seduce Harker’s fiance, Mina Murray. The novel is not nearly as romantic as the movie (the Gary Oldman/Winona Ryder version), but the tragedy lies in a character so dark that though he yearns for love, he cannot overcome his own nature.

Dmitri (Archangel’s Blade, Guild Hunter #4, by Nalini Singh)
In this world, Angels make vampires, who serve them and do their bidding. Honor is a hunter, but after being held captive for months by vampires, she is in no position to do her duty. So when she is paired with vampire Dmitri to investigate the targeted murders of vampires, she isn’t sure she’ll be able to make it through without breaking—or bringing him into her bed.

Rehvenge, (Lover Avenged, Black Dagger Brotherhood #7, by J.R. Ward)
Okay, I lied: I had to add one more Black Dagger Brotherhood title to this list! Rehvenge, the hero of the 7th book, is one of my all-time favorite vamps. He’s a club owner with mob connections who keeps his distance from the brotherhood’s issues—but Rehvenge has many secrets, including that he has been approached to kill the Brotherhood’s king. He meets Ehlena, a nurse connected to the Brotherhood, and falls in love with her—but when their relationship may endanger his secrets, Rehvenge makes a terrible decision to save them both.
