  • A World War II memoir about one of the most heroic defenses of all time

  • Also includes airborne actions in North Africa and Sicily

As part of Operation Market Garden, the Allies' September 1944 attempt to secure crossings over the Rhine River in the Netherlands, the British 2nd Parachute Regiment, commanded by John Frost, landed outside Arnhem with orders to seize bridges inside the city. The paratroopers did so but were soon cut off from other Allied units. Grossly outnumbered, Frost and his men fought off German armored and infantry assaults for three days and four nights. Finally forced to surrender, Frost spent the remainder of the war in German captivity.

    I Also Recommend:

    John Frost's battle memoir

To anyone who has read about or studied Operation Market-Garden, John Frost is a legend. His battalion held for 4 days against superior German forces at the northern end of the Rhine bridge in Arnhem. However, this book only dedicates 4 chapters to that famous battle. These chapters do a fine job of detailing his memories and excellent analysis of the battle, along with his thoughts on why his mission failed. Unfortunately, there are 15 other chapters that focus on Frost's time in France, Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy. While enlightening, it's not about Arnhem. The information about the Bruneval raid to capture a German radar, and background on forming the 2nd Para Battalion might entertain. However, as a personal account, it's not always a compelling book to read. Frost's style is remote, and lacks details that other personal accounts bring to describe each battle and what it was like to be there. As a battalion commander, his view of the battlefield is more removed and not as immediate. For its viewpoint of the Arnhem battle, it's a worthwhile read, particularly due to Frost's unique place in the Market-Garden operation. Cornelius Ryan's excellent book "A Bridge Too Far" is required reading about the operation, and Geoffrey Powell's "Men At Arnhem" is a much more vivid personal account that sheds more light on the battle in Oosterbeek with the 1st Airborne Division. A good addition to any library on World War II, but I recommend going straight to the chapters on Arnhem and skimming the rest later.
