    Abraham Lincoln really was an amazing president

    I read this book with my 3rd grade daughter. We both enjoyed it and we both learned. I had read other books about Lincoln (Doris Kearns Goodwin's book is excellent). Like most people, I knew that that Abraham Lincoln grew up poor and read by lamp at night. Until reading this book, I don't think I understood the sum total of personal loss in his life: he lost his mother, his sister, his girlfriend and then his sons. He had a father who openly opposed his education and somehow he managed to continue to learn and his mother and step-mother continued to support him as best they could. His childhood wasn't a matter of picking the best school; it had more to do with getting a school and then being able to attend it. I still wonder how he and other pioneers made it across the US without clothing designed for the weather.

    Abraham Lincoln's childhood is remarkable and children would benefit by learning more about it. This is a good book for biography reports.
