Roger Braunstein is the Director of Technology at Your Majesty. He is an ActionScript veteran, multidisciplinary programmer, and author of a short book on Flex 2. He has done a wide variety of projects for clients large and small, as a leader, developer, and animator.

    One of the problems with Flash CS3 and Flex is that Adobe, uncharacteristically, has been late in getting documentation about ActionScript 3 to its customers. Yes you can find things spread over helpfiles, an extras CD, and various websites - but the search can be tedious and time consuming. So with the ActionScript 3 Bible the authors have an opportunity to deliver the goods all in one place and for the most part they do so admirably. First, there are lots of explanations of and examples for the big changes between ActionScript 2 and ActionScript 3. Second, the writers make sure in detail that you get started running the many examples 'a tricky wicket to say the least - appreciated'. Third, the examples run the gamut of games, web pages, to navigation bars - a good but not perfect cross section. It would be nice to have more examples of data connections and use with Adobe's new AIR runtime. But, all in all, very Bible-like comprehensive coverage of a new and important element in Flash development.

    Half of Snippets Are Buggy

    About half of example codes generate compiler errors. There are a few chapters in which none of the snippets works. I figure that experienced ActionScripters could fix those bugs as they go along, but for a reference-type book claiming to cater to all levels, this doesn't make any sense. How could they teach with examples that don't work? Comically, the book has a chapter on debugging. Handful of snippets, they can't be bothered to put into folders with corresponding chapter titles, so they simply dunked them in the top level folder, so you'll need to open up all of them and check to find a matching code. I've been reading computer-related books regularly for about 15 years, and this is the first time to come across a book done at a downright crappy level of production. If they can't be bothered with necessary production, why would they bother to write to begin with? If you're looking for a ActionScript counterpart of Danny Goodman's, you'll be in for a surprise.
