Publishers Weekly
Jasper introduces tattoo artist Riley Poe in this shallow launch of a Southern-fried vampire romance trilogy. Once a wild child, Riley is now a surrogate parent to her younger brother, Seth. Riley's adopted Gullah relatives provide a living blood bank for the Dupré family of "good" vampires, who kept deadly undead "strigoi" bloodsuckers encrypted in Savannah's Bonaventure Cemetery until Seth's teenage prank freed them. Now evil strigoi Victorian and Valerian are bent on recruiting Seth and slaking their thirst on Riley's rare blood. Mysterious and magnetic Eli Dupré, entrusted with Riley's protection, both thrills her and freaks her out with vampiric cravings and sensual caresses. This superficial addition to today's vampire craze, couched in superheated first-person tough-girl lingo, adds only a few meager drops of insight into the current popularity of Dracula's literary descendants. I love this book. I probably read it a thousand times. It has everything: sexy hot tempered vampire, secrets, two evi brothers, fighting, a galiah priest, and a inked reformed bad girl. The only I have to warn is there is a few inapropreite scenes. I would not suggest anyone under 13 to read it.

I had bought this book specifically because i loved the cover. It sat on my shelf for awhile and i finally found the time to read it. It was absolutely wonderful! Riley Poe is a self sufficient 25yr old who takes care of her younger brother, Seth. When Seth starts acting differently Riley starts to worry that he's using drugs. If only. She finds out that something much darker and dangerous is happening to him. Set in Savannah, Georgia, the familiar streets she'd come to love now are home to two dangerous vampires who are using her brother and his friends to lure victims so they can gain strength after being entombed for a long time. Seth is turning into on of the creatures she just learned existed, vampires. Riley is introduced to the Dupre family, who just happen to be vampires. Eli Dupre is put in charge of protecting her and finds it difficult to resist her rare blood type and her body. Elle Jasper did a wonderful job at writing this book, i am definitely putting it up there with one of my favorite series! Can't wait to read more of her books!! It's edgy and sexy!

Some of the words are the same as twilight, like describing the feelings she had for eli but totally not the same storyline. But it was very slow and i never felt excited about ne of the supose ed action scenes. A little bit over 200 pages on the nook not worth 6.99 not getting the second book. Felt flat, honestly descriptions of characters kept me reading it they are very unique. Premise was there needed a better author to carry it through, maybe lk hamilton or stacia kane people not scared to write about the darkside of characters. Two stars only for the descriptions of the characters. Also a quick statement about the gullah who cares if she was white purple or whatever she was adopted by these people she never used them, don t make this more than it was meant to be previous reviewer. The book just fell flat period.

The author keeps you entertained throughout the book. I definitely think the next book, coming out in June, will be better.

In this book, Elle shows readers the darker, creepier side of Savannah, Georgia, besides adding her own touch of Gothic elements in it. You can observe it in Riley's dressing code and fashion sense. Riley Poe is an amazing heroine. She's spunky, badass, witty and loves her brother a great deal. I'd really like to see the dragon tattoo on her back and arms if she were a real person. She has a soft spot for her younger brother Seth, whom she cares for since her mother died. She always calls him "my baby brother" and I think that is cute, since I did the same with mine. When Seth and his friends disrupts an ancient stone in Savannah's Bonaventure Cemetery, they accidentally releases two evil, powerful vampires --- Victorian and Valerian, descendants of the Strigoi. Then, all hell breaks loose. The two evil vampires, Victorian and Valerian, are out for blood, and they are using Seth and his friends to do lure victims. To save her brother from eternal damnation, Riley seeks help from her surrogate grandfather, the Preacher, who is a Gullah conjurer. His grandfather introduces her to the Dupre family, who agrees to aid her in saving Seth. But there's something strange about the Dupres. They possess amazing speed, and they can change into terrifying monsters in a blink of the eye. They are actually vampires. And Eli Dupre, one of them, has been ordered to act as her personal bodyguard. As time passes, the mutual attraction between them heightened. Eli Dupre is like the perfect guy, he's hot, handsome and protective. But he can be pretty scary too, when he gets angry or hungry. He grows fond of Riley, and eventually falls in love with her despite the fact that they are two different persons from two different worlds. Elle Jasper is a talented writer. She weaves the tale perfectly, and ends each chapter with a surprise. I was eager to continue reading and stopped only when my eyes cannot resist the urge to rest. The setting is written in detail, giving me a clear mental image of the charms of the historical sites in Savannah. There is a quote that reminds me of Twilight, but that's a small thing. I loved the book nevertheless. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the second book in The Dark Ink Chronicles, Everdark!

In Savannah, Riley Poe reflects back to her wild youth as now she is raising her younger teenage brother, Seth. She is recognized as one of the city's best tattoo artists; always in demand. Seth and his friends pull a teen stunt in Bonaventure Cemetery. Their prank backfires when it frees the strigoi vampires, who leave their "prison" taking the humans with them. A desperate Riley turns to Eli Dupre and his kin to save her sibling from the vicious Victorian and Valerian who plan to convert Seth and toast their victory by dining on Riley's rare blood. Eli, sworn to protect the city from the strigoi and to keep Riley safe plans to help her rescue her brother but also hopes to persuade Riley they belong together. The first Dark Ink Chronicles romantic urban fantasy is a fast-paced thriller starring a kick butt heroine whose unique blood proves more in demand than her unique tattoos. Although Riley's personality and tattoo skills have been used in other series (see Karen E. Olson's amateur sleuth series The Tattoo Shop), Elle Jasper's rendition of the vampire Everdark underworld of Savannah provides a welcome addition to the sub-genre blood bank. Harriet Klausner

This book was a by chance buy. It was so good I had to get the next series because I didn't want the story to end!. If you like paranormal romance this is for you. The way the author describes all the action it was like I was actually there.

It's funny how we come across good books without even realizing it. I was at a used book store checking out what was in that day and this book ended up in my basket somehow. I know I did not put it in my mix but someone was bringing this book to me. I am so glad they did. I loved this story. I have even gotten 4 of my friends hooked on this series. This is about Riley, she is a tattoo artist and she is human. She takes care of her younger brother after the death of her mother. When Riley's brother Seth is brought in a cult trying to turn them into vampires, Riley turns to her Gullah relatives for help they bring her to the Dupre family, a very old vampire family. You cannot help but get wrapped up in the adventure Riley goes on. Elle brings in Louisana history and it makes this story seem real. It is a definite must read.

Love this book

Louisiana is the perfect place for a vampire novel (let's face it, they keep their dead above ground). This book turned out to be far better than I expected, although it still portrays the whiny vampire. But, the plot was interesting, and for the most part the characters were engaging. Despite any of my complaining, I did sit down and read this book in one day.

Riley Poe is a tattoo artist that runs Inksomnia with her best friend Nyx. Riley used to be a wild child that all changed when she found her mother murdered and needed to raise her little brother Seth. Preacher Man is a surrogate grandfather to both Riley and Seth. He keeps an eye out for Riley and Seth. Seth is your average fifteen year old boy that doesn't get into too much trouble that is until he and his friends break into a crypt. Nothing will ever be the same for Riley and Seth because they are about to enter into afterlight. Afterlight has creatures and beings that the rest of the world thinks of as myth. Preacher Man is a Gullah healer and mystic, who introduces Riley to the Dupre Family. The Dupre's are a form of vampires that protect the city from other creatures of afterlight. Seth goes missing and only the Dupres and Gullah men can find him. Riley is desperate to find her brother yet her attraction to Eligus or Eli Dupre grows by leaps and bounds. Eli tells Riley that she shouldn't tempt him yet finds himself unable to deny their attraction either. To find her brother, Riley must re~enter a world she swore she left behind full of drugs, sex, and drinking. She thought she had moved past all of this but finds out that she's dead wrong. Will Riley survive her trip back to hell? Will Seth be found? Can Riley learn to trust Eli? Can Eli let Riley in? Your answers await you in Afterlight.

While I did truly enjoy this story, the obvious similarities to twilight disturbed me. I would hope that writers know that they do not have to copy twilight to sell books. The story had a very good myth dealing with both the vampires and the gullah. I wish she would have spent more time on that and less on the romance that was so close to twilight that some of the phrases were even the same. It is obvious that this is the first novel for the author and I hope the next book works out some of the mistakes a good editor could have pointed out. I would still recommend the book because i think it has great potential as a series. My only other concern is the reference to Riley growing up on the wild side and being street smart, it was said and never really shown.
