Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
Reed is a novelist, essayist, playwright and poet who has taught at the leading institutions in America. Yet the most accurate image of him is as a fighter who pulls no punches and tells it like it is. The subtitle of his book is "Dispatches from the Race War"; he sees the enemy as the government that condones profiling, politicians who use stereotypes to inculcate fear of the black man to win votes, feminists who are fighting the wrong fight, the media, the police, and just about every other organized segment of American society. Because it is a war, he uses all weapons available to him and reading his essays calls to mind the slash and burn tactics of guerrilla soldiers. Nonetheless, his writing is honest, close to the bone, upsetting and thought provoking, without the usual polite sugar coating we often use in discussing racism in America. KLIATT Codes: SA—Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2003, Perseus, Basic Books, 189p. index., Ages 15 to adult.
