Overview

Zak Cato is a xenocop. He's returning a fugitive shape-shifting Sagathi when things go horribly awry. Saved from being slaughtered with the rest of his men because he is drunk, Cato must now become the hero he was created to be, recapture the Sagathi, and exact revenge.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Prolific military SF author Dietz starts a duology with a testosterone-soaked tale of violent retribution. Jak Cato is a member of the Xeno Corps, a cadre of soldiers bio-engineered by the Uman Empire to deal with the shape-shifting Sagathi. A skirmish with the alien Vord forces Jak's ship down on Dantha, an impoverished former prison planet, and Jak gets drunk in a tavern and awakens to learn his entire unit has been massacred. Guilt-ridden and angry, the stubborn Xeno cop hunts the culprits with little concern for collateral damage. Dietz is enthusiastic but clumsy, scattering exclamation points like discarded bullet casings and relying on melodramatic villains. The setting is an unconvincing and unimaginative Rome-in-Space culture featuring a frankly disturbing repeated motif of the loving slave, and the story is too predictable for readers tired of space opera clichés. (Oct.)
Library Journal
The Pax Umana rules the stars with its firm but somewhat benevolent imperial fist, confining the most violent race, the shape-shifting Sagathi, to their home planet. When a fugitive shape-shifter escapes aboard a ship bound for Sagatha, Xeno Corps Section Leader Jak Cato goes on the hunt and gets caught in a conspiracy on the imperial planet Dantha. Dietz (Galactic Bounty) writes fast-paced military sf, filling his stories with more action than character development but satisfying readers who like fast-paced space operas with flawed but likable heroes. VERDICT With a setting reminiscent of Imperial Rome brought into the far future, Dietz's first title in a new duology should please his many followers as well as fans of Steve Perry's "Matador" series and the novels of Michael Stackpole.

    entertaining police procedural space opera

The Uman Empire has never been challenged by any of their conquests as they increasingly rule the stars; colonizing planets along the way. However, recently a planet has been found containing violent prone shape-shifters; to control the nasty Sagathis, the Uman scientists biologically reengineered a special forces unit the Xeno Corps who has the skill to see past the bodily changes into the essence of these aliens.

A battle with the Vord forced a Xeno Corps ship escorting a captured Sagathi to land on former prison planet Dantha for repairs. The crew including Jak Cato gets smashingly drunk. When Jak regains consciousness with a splitting headache, he learns to his horror that every other Xeno cop he served with was slaughtered during the night. Filled with survivor guilt and fueled by rage, Jak vows to hunt down and kill everyone involved with the slaughter especially the person who betrayed them.

This is an entertaining police procedural (loosely that is) space opera for fans who relish blood, gore and blood. The story line is fast-paced as Jak and the villains emote overly dramatic while bystanders are killed at an alarming rate. Fans who enjoy a blood-spattered science fiction thriller will want to read the first of a two part saga as William C. Dietz provides an exciting but out of control opening act.
