Overview

When Lauren Monroe first laid eyes on Michael Delaney back in high school, she had every reason to stay away from him; within minutes of their first encounter, his volatile actions confirmed his notorious reputation. But Lauren saw something in him that caused her to question his bad-boy persona, and against her better judgment, she took a chance. She had no way of knowing that the unlikely friendship they formed would become so important to her.

Or that it would end so painfully.

Eight years later, when Lauren begins her new job at Learn and Grow Day Care, Michael is the last person she expects to see. Refusing to revisit the hurt and confusion of their past, Lauren vows to keep her distance from him. But staying away from Michael proves to be more difficult than she thought, despite her lingering grief and her instincts for self-preservation.

As Lauren and Michael recall the friendship that changed them forever and the events that tore them apart, will they finally be able to heal? Or will the ghosts of Michael’s past prove to be too much to overcome?

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
First love between two unlikely teenagers comes full circle in this second-chance, friends-to-lovers debut from Glenn. Good-natured high school freshman Lauren Monroe can't get bad boy Michael Delaney out of her head. She's heard all the warnings of her fellow classmates, and she's even witnessed some of his rage in health class, where he flipped over a desk on the first day of school. But she can't shake the feeling that there is depth and reason behind his outlandish actions, and an unlikely friendship grows. He likes that she never asks him about which rumors are true, and she likes that she gets to know him in a way that no one else has. So it's no surprise when she slowly starts to fall in love with him. After sleeping together (her first time), Michael convinces himself that leaving town after graduation and never talking to her again is the best option for the future. Though he loves her, his past has damaged his ability to connect, and he feels he isn't good enough for her and will only let her down. Flash forward eight years. Lauren lives in a new town, and at her first day teaching day care, Michael shows up out of the blue with his enrolled 4-year-old daughter, Erin. Reluctant to dredge up the past or confront her feelings, they fall into a professional rhythm. But though Lauren begins dating her chiropractor, she can't forget her past with Michael. It's as hard to write a realistic, nonschmaltzy love story as it is to tell any other kind. Glenn not only succeeds here, but flourishes at making her characters both believable and engaging. Just as Nicholas Sparks did with The Notebook, Glenn tells the story of rekindled first love with a deft touch. Romance fans will devour this standout story.

Tough Critic Book Reviews - Mollie Harper
I honestly don't know what it was about this book, but it captured me from the start. It was everything I needed in a book and more. It was heart wrenching, heart breaking, heart healing, and even funny...this book is pure genius.
Aestas Book Blog
It's a beautiful, believable second-chance friends-to-lovers story that was both heart breaking and heart warming, with an uplifting, satisfying ending that left me clutching my heart, with happy tears in my eyes and a smile on my face.
Natasha Is a Book Junkie
A poignantly and expertly written story of two healing hearts, the tale of Michael and Lauren is one that I suspect you will carry in your own heart for a very long time after you finish reading it.
Judith I Love YA Fiction
I LOVE THIS BOOK. It is the perfect balance between YA and romance...The chapters flow seamlessly between the past and present, between Lauren’s voice and Michael’s, and like every aspect of this book, Back To You is just effortlessly beautiful.

It has been a while since I’ve read a book that I thoroughly enjoyed this much, but Back to You has found itself on my “Favorites” bookshelf. From the first chapter, I was drawn into the story. Back to You follows the story of two best friends with radically different upbringings, who fall out of touch only to stumble back into each others' lives eight years later.

The heart of the story deals with anger and a loss of trust – though the reader is unsure why – on Lauren’s part. Though she’s grown up to be an independent, successful woman with a passion for working with children, her former friendship with Michael has far-reaching consequences in her life and on her ability to love.

As is often done with stories dealing with characters’ pasts, Glenn used the mixed-timeline method of storytelling. I can’t count the number of times that I have gotten lost in a story only to turn a page, find the story jumping several years into the past or future, and totally lose the feel of – and interest in – the overall story.

However, Glenn successfully balanced the time jumps, traversing the present and the past, from both Lauren’s and Michael’s points-of-view, with ease. This is no easy feat, and can often come off as disjointed and misplaced inserts that take you out of the story and quickly make you lose interest. Instead, what the reader gets is an emotionally-filled journey that takes you from the lives of children and teens to their adult counter-parts and their very realistic, divergent paths.

Of course, all of this to say that I genuinely enjoyed Back to You, and will definitely be following Priscilla Glenn, already anticipating her next work. It is an easy read, and you will likely struggle to put the book down.

I can't believe this story doesn't have 5 rating! Sure, it was a bit predictable-But what a beautiful story about first love and overcoming a terrible childhood, in spite of all the obstacles. And I loved that we get both of the main characters' POVs. Usually that kind of thing gives me whiplash, but this story was done beautifully. I can't wait to read more by this author.

    Very good

All teenagers are gifted with an unlimited ability for stupid behavior and decisions. What Michael did was hurtful but, realistically, he and Lauren would more than likely fallen apart once she went to college. Both of them needed to grow up ALOT before a solid relationship was possible.

After reading this book, I had one thought that was on repeat in my brain. I freaking love Michael Delaney, I don't care what anyone else says. I love him for his faults, his mistakes, his protectiveness, and his heart (no matter how blind it may be). Back to You is Michael's story. It is Lauren's story. And it is a story about friendship that went beyond anything I've ever felt when immersed in a book. Their story develops into a heart pumping, tear jerking, all consuming-love story and it made my heart melt.
My favorite part of the book is the connection and meaningful friendship that blossoms between these two completely opposite characters. The chemistry, connection, and emotional baggage that exists between Michael and Lauren intensifies as the book progresses. What begins as an easy friendship ends up a wild ride, and eventually they find themselves together again but wary as to where to go from there.
My favorite aspect of Michael and Lauren's love story is the build up. They're very young when they first become friends and they become adults together, before life separates them. The author does a great job picking the young relationship up in adulthood and making it fresh and easy, continuing the friendship and comfort the characters had as teenagers, even with the uncomfortable past between them that the reader slowly learns. Priscilla Glenn successfully created a love that is the farthest from inta-love.
Priscilla Glenn did an absolutely remarkable job jumping from past to present with fluid motion. She also succeeded in jumping from Lauren's POV to Michaels in such a way that I was never questioning who the narrator was at any point.
I loved this book and went into it excited to read it thanks to the beautiful reviews and high praise from fellow readers. So here is my high praise. And, this is me telling you not to miss this read, because it's going to be big.

Lauren has just started her new job as a Pre-K teacher. She’s still learning the ropes on her first day when in walks her old friend Michael. They were best friends throughout high school, until Michael did something unforgivable and they haven’t spoken since. Now they’re all grown up and Michael’s little girl is a student in Lauren’s class. Though Lauren tries hard to keep things professional, the two have a real chemistry that makes it difficult.

I liked Lauren’s character. She was kind and friendly, but also self-assured (even as a teenager). She was very likeable, and it was easy to see why Michael enjoyed having her as a friend. He was a classic bad boy – mean and gritty on the outside, with a sad story that made him want to hide from the world. And it was a doozy of a story. It was easy to see why he had become the person he was. In fact, I was surprised he didn’t end up more screwed up than he was. His little girl Erin is just about the cutest darn thing ever. She was mostly realistic, although I have to wonder what 4-year old doesn’t have at least 1 sleep-deprived meltdown or act like a brat at least once in a while…

The story took place in the present day, and every other chapter or so was told in a flashback. The flashbacks were not sequential, but for the purpose of the story, it fit. My one issue with the flashbacks was that I kept wanting to know what Michael did that was so horrible! They kept talking about it and talking about it, but we don’t learn what he did until about 3/4 of the way in. Also, I didn’t think what he did was as terrible as Lauren kept saying it was. Jerky, yes. But not unforgivable, in my opinion. I did like learning how they met and how they were with each other in school. And especially how wonderful Michael was to her when they were in private, when he could just be himself.

This was a fairly clean book – there was some sex, but it was pretty nondescript and glossed over. I don’t recall any curse words, though there may have been 1 or 2. This is being marketed as an adult book, but I would also consider it new-adult, since Lauren is still in school and just starting her ‘life.’

The sum up: Sweet and romantic, this is the perfect book for someone looking for a romance story with guts.
