A huge story to sit alongside "The Eagle Has landed"
Wow-talk about a saga! Ballard's War starts off like many other WW-2 spy stories: a mysterious person quickly becomes a person of interest. In this case Robert Ballard appears in Berlin out of nowhere and feeds the Germans Allied secrets. In no time they realize this guy really knows what he's talking about! But while grateful the Germans (and the reader!) wonder, what is this guy up to? Ballard befriends the German Secret Service desk jockey assigned to "milk him dry." Soon the agent is eating out of Ballard's hand-and why not? His secrets are starting to pull one set of German chestnuts out of the fire after another. His two biggest warnings are about the English decoding factory that is breaking German codes at a fast clip, and the danger of letting the Soviets encircle the 6th Army at Stalingrad.
Having proven his capabilities to the Secret Service, Ballard attracts the attention of the Gestapo in the form of one really wonderfully depicted bad guy-Oskar Faulheim (the Darth Vader of Ballard's War). Protected by the Secret Service, Faulheim goes after Ballard's girlfriend, a very sensual Italian widow, and he goes after her with a vengeance!
Just when you think this is just another interesting spy story, Ballard reveals his price-an incredibly clever operation against his homeland (which elevates this tale into best seller territory)--but why?
Well all I can say without spoiling the plot is that Ballard's motivation is clear and brilliant, if not just a bit weird. But as the action part of the story drives to its climax, so does the machinations of Faulheim against Ballard and his girlfriend. And the resolution is so satisfying!!!
