Overview

A little boy imagines what life was like for his new dog before he adopted him from a shelter. Maybe he had a boy who loved him, but the family had to move and couldn-t keep him. Maybe he belonged to someone who didn't appreciate how mischievous puppies can be. Maybe he was treated badly, and now he can be shown all the love he's been missing. This boy wonders about all of these things, but maybe they don't matter. Because now, his dog is home.

Editorial Reviews

Elizabeth Ward
Few will be able to resist the small, bright-eyed, brown-eared rescue dog that stars in Maribeth Boelts's Before You Were Mine…A splendid plea on behalf of all strays.
—The Washington Post
Children's Literature
After a family adopts a stray dog from a shelter, the young boy contemplates various scenarios that could have caused the dog to be abandoned. Had the dog lived with a family who loved him and just got lost? Had his family moved and left him behind? Had his previous owners become disillusioned with his puppy ways— chewing on things, peeing on the carpet, drinking from the toilet? Had the dog been lonely, kept on a chain, mistreated? How did he survive on his own? Did he sleep in dark alleys? Of course, the boy does not know the answers to any of these questions. What he does know is that someone brought the dog to the shelter where he was cared for until his adoption and now he is loved very much. The soft watercolor illustrations clearly depict each of the scenes described. An author's note at the end encourages readers to consider adopting abandoned adult dogs. A useful, special purpose concept book. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
Kirkus Reviews
"Before you were mine . . . " wonders a little boy, "[d]id you live in a warm house with warm smells and a rug that was only yours? [Or were] you kept on a chain, with a dusty bowl and lonely sounds all around?" Never varying from this direct address, the little boy speculates about the life his dog may have led before being adopted from the shelter. He imagines happiness, cruelty, misfortune, neglect: "[Maybe] you ran away and they never heard that if your dog runs away, you look for him . . . until you find him." Softly framed pastel panels and vignettes depict a round, mustard-colored little mutt playing with an imagined boy, making puppy-mischief, alone and scared, before being taken to the shelter for "a meal, and a bath, and a bed of your own" before coming home with the narrator. Boelts's restrained text and Walker's affecting illustrations combine to pack a small wallop directly to the hearts of dog-loving children who will almost certainly give their pets an extra hug afterwards. A note on adopting a shelter pet follows this unabashedly emotional offering. (Picture book. 4-8)

    For rescue lovers

I bought this book to read during a pet unit (I'm a school librarian). It is wonderful in showing empathy for animals. The main character voices all thoughts you have when you adopt a rescue pet. I couldn't believe how good it was! It made me cry (and all my teachers)!

    I Also Recommend:

Great book for modeling compassion for animals/adoption

This book is absolutely wonderful for any family with children. It helps children realize the great pleasures and self-gratification of adopting a shelter animal. It teaches compassion and love for other beings and the good deed of adopting from a shelter in an easy and sweet read that even the youngest children can understand. As a shelter volunteer and a mother, all children should have the opportunity to read and share this book with loved ones - even their dogs!
