One of my favorite flavors of Science Fiction has always been the “Generation Ship.” In this line, a community of people has gone aboard a sub-light speed space ship, bound for a distant star system. The passengers and crew know that they will spend the rest of their lives on the ship, as will their children, all in the hopes that their descendants. Will someday colonize a new world. Things never seem to work out as planned. I’ve a new favorite in the genera, Beneath The Sky.
More than a thousand years ago, the followers of St. Mason fled the corruption and sin of Earth, and committed themselves and their descendents to a nearly two thousand year voyage to the promised new world of New Providence. They are centuries past the halfway point, certain in their devotion to God’s plan. They the are discovered by a Faster than Light freighter, and discover that humanity has spread through the galaxy, and the promise world of New Providence already has a thriving colony, and that their ancestors have left them well remembered by sinners left behind.
Will the Elders accept the “new reality?” Will the next generation wait 600 years?
