Overview

All Sergeant Evrial Yara wanted was to protect the young emperor from those plotting to kill him. Joining forces with a group of notorious outlaws wasn’t part of the plan, especially not when one of them is determined to charm her out of her uniform at every turn. Working with the criminals might have been worth it if their efforts had saved the emperor, but it seems he’s not the rightful heir to the throne.... Evrial may have thrown away her career for nothing.

To make matters worse, fate isn’t going to give her time to calmly decide what to do next. While she’s traveling back to the capital with Amaranthe Lokdon and the rest of the outlaws, Evrial uncovers artifacts that have been smuggled aboard their steamboat. They’re deadly enough to threaten the entire city, perhaps the entire empire. Oh, and they could kill everybody on board the boat too. These scenarios just weren’t discussed in the Enforcer Academy.

This 56,000-word novella takes place between Books 5 and 6 in the Emperor’s Edge series.

I Absolutely recommend the sideline novellas!

If you are enjoying this series, do yourself a favor and pick up these side story novellas. They are just as well-written and add depth to the character development and storyline that is well worth it. Even better if you can read them in order with the main series (check the author's website for the order).
This one fills in events that occur as the group returns to the capital but also focuses on the developing interactions between Maldonado and Sergeant Yara -- very entertaining!

Another great story in the Emperor's Edge series

I do not consider myself to be a big fan of fantasy stories but I am totally addicted to the Emperor's Edge series. The personalities of this odd group of people and their interactions/dialogue have me smiling even through some pretty extreme adventures. I definitely recommend you read them in order though as you'll miss way to much if you pick it up in the middle. Highly recommended for great entertainment!

enjoyable addtion to a great series

Another enjoyable addition to a great series. As always, well-written, with lots of action and humor. The character development over the course of the series has been well done, and I am much looking forward to the next book and conclusion to the series.

    Predictable but fun

I really enjoy the Emperor's Edge series! I like the way Buroker focuses on different characters in each book without losing her focus on the main characters. Intriguing science, technology and magic.

Love it! Fun story lots of action and moves the characters personal relationships ahead more than most of the full length novels have. Not sure what else I can say without spoilers. Liked the end a lot as one character is forced to see some of his preconceived notionsabout character (or even notions brought on by evidence presented by his own eyes ) may not be all there is to see in a man

    Absolutely Fantastic

Buroker has this amazing ability to craft characters that are engaging and 3-dimensional. She takes the time to develop them into whole people, who evolve as the series progresses. Whenever I read her books I'm always struck by how vividly I experience the story. It lights up your imagination to where you feel like you're watching a movie.

But most of all, I look forward to reading her books. She balances the action, the humor, the emotions. There are too few authors writing like this today.

I highly recommend this EE series and you can't lose with any of her books.

I loved Yara's story, Maldynado ROCKS, but THANK YOU for moving the other two along.
