Overview

Callie is at an October keg party in the woods, when she notices that her friend Katherine has gone missing. The kids spread out to look for her and Callie finds her, lying on a path, with a big, bloody fake knife in her. She reaches for the knife and raises it, only to discover, to her horror, that it is real. At that moment, another of the search party stumbles on them, and takes a photo of Callie holding the bloody knife. Now she is the suspect in a grisly murder. How can she prove her innocence - and find the true murderer?

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Callie knows no one will believe that she did not kill Katherine Remington-Day—after all, someone snapped a photo of her holding a bloody knife over Katherine's dead body. Too scared to turn herself in for fear that she will end up in prison like her older brother, Callie spends several days hiding out from the police. Katherine often manipulated Callie into doing things that she did not want to do, such as breaking up with her boyfriend, Slade, while he was away at basic training. In fact, Callie had started to despise Katherine, and now everyone in town is pinning the murder on her. She is convinced that she can find Katherine's true killer if she can gather more information about the IC, the group of girls in Katherine's inner circle. There is so much Callie does not know about her friends, and soon she will realize that the killer is the last person she would ever suspect. In this sequel to Wish You Were Dead (Egmont USA, 2010), Strasser begins to build suspense from the very first page, right after the murder takes place. Each chapter is composed of a passage set in the present and a detailed flashback that slowly reveals the tumultuous nature of the relationships between members of the IC before Katherine's murder. A great deal of dialogue, short chapters, and straightforward diction will make this a quick read for students who enjoy murder mysteries. Reviewer: Amy Wycoff
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Callie's friend tells her that their mutual friend Katherine is missing from the party and suggests that Callie check behind the ball field. Callie arrives on the scene only to find Katherine's body lying in a pool of blood. She leans down and picks up the knife, realizing that she is now covered in blood, too. Just then, all of the kids from the party pour onto the scene and begin snapping cell phone photos of Callie holding the knife, standing over the corpse. Her brother has had his own brush with the law and is currently in prison so Callie runs and masterfully employs amazing disguises and subterfuge to outwit local law enforcement. The balance of the novel is spent jumping back and forth in time as Callie uncovers the events and motives that could possibly reveal the real culprit. The jumps in sequence are at times confusing, and the end is a little unsatisfying. It relies on a thinly developed lesbian subplot to create character motive: weak at best. Nonetheless, author recognition, the teen love of mystery, and a stellar cover will no doubt make this a well-circulating title.—Leah Krippner, Harlem High School, Machesney Park, IL

    The cover:

This is the UK cover, and for some reasons, I like it better than the US cover, probably because Wish You Were Dead’s, the previous book’s, UK cover is way prettier than the US one. Although, the US one makes more sense….

    The storyline:

This story has less horror in it than the previous book but way more suspense. I was holding my breath all the time because I knew something bad was going to happen.

The mystery in this story was the number one thing that kept me reading, it was a great journey with Callie trying to figure out who killed Katherine and framed her. I’ve been thinking about the killer and the possibilities all the time while reading the book, and I’m sad to say, I totally didn’t expect the ending…!!

    What I loved:

The writing style was very good, it is somehow different from the first book, but it only made the book better.
I was expecting it to be a sequel in story to Wish You Were Dead and was somehow shocked to find that it is a totally different story. I loved how the story was built from ground zero and developed its own surroundings and characters but it also happened in the same city, so this tiny detail didn’t change :).
The main protagonist, Callie, was very brave and smart too.
The story wasn’t boring despite its 51 chapters and I actually remember each one because they were short and weren’t long.
    Two words: the ending!
    My favorite chapter is 47!!
The twists and the ongoing cobwebs of weird events.
    What I hated/didn’t like:

Hmm.. nothing really I can remember.

    What I missed:

I wish there was a bit more horror in the story?! It lacked that compared to the first book and there weren’t any gore or horrifying descriptions or scenes (Call me crazy, but I love these and really liked them in the first one, it’s not like they’re too scary or disgusting, they just add this feel to the story).
    The characters:

Callie is the protagonist. She’s been framed for a death she didn’t commit and she was courageous and strong while trying to prove her innocence.

Slade is Callie’s boyfriend. He really loves her and helps her thru the book, but at the end, you’ll find many unsettling truths about him.

Dakota is the one who’s been blamed by Callie in the book for killing Katherine and setting up Callie. She’s not totally innocent either.

Katherine, the dead girl, is basically the mean girl in the Soundview High school. She’s been manipulating a lot of students including Callie, Dakota and Mia.

Mia is another girl who happens to want to be in Katherine’s circle but ends up being kicked out by her. She becomes Callie’s friend.

Other characters worth mentioning are Callie’s parents and brother, Sebastian, who’s in jail for attacking their father and causing him permanent brain damage. Chief od police Jenkins who’s Dakota’s uncle and an old friend of Callie’s father.

    Conclusion:

This was a really good read. I don’t have words to describe it, but if you love thriller and mystery books with twists, this is definitely one to check :)

Reviewed by Sally Kruger aka "Readingjunky" for Teens Read Too

Having just finished reading Todd Strasser's IF I GROW UP to my 8th graders, I was excited to read another one of his books. BLOOD ON MY HANDS is the second book in what is described as a "thrill"-ogy that began with WISH YOU WERE DEAD. Callie seems to have been caught red-handed, knife in hand, bent over the body of Katherine Remington-Day. Someone in the crowd that gathered snapped a picture of Callie holding the murder weapon, and now she finds herself on the run from the police. After what Katherine did to her, Callie isn't particularly upset that her former friend is dead, but she certainly is not going to be framed for the murder. What she needs to do now is find somewhere safe to hide so she can figure out a plan. Before too many people are aware of her instant fame, Callie makes a quick stop at a store to buy hair dye and a few other supplies to create a disguise. Her tiny build doesn't allow her to blend into crowds of average-sized individuals, so she opts for a Goth girl style in hopes of looking totally different than people would expect. Callie has an idea of who may have committed the crime, but she needs help. Counting on her parents for assistance is worthless. Her mother is needed at home to care for her disabled father, and her brother is in prison, found guilty of the attack that crippled their father. She must be careful which friends she goes to for help, since practically everyone she knows is part of the clique led by the late Katherine. Her only hope lies with Slade. But how willing will he be to help, since she dumped him and broke his heart? BLOOD ON MY HANDS chronicles the days following the murder as Callie tries to prove her innocence. She describes her struggle to search for evidence as she hides from the police. During the time she spends hiding, she recalls the events leading up to her current situation. The suspense created by the twists and turns in friendships and circumstances surrounding Katherine's death and Callie's presumed guilt make for an action-packed thriller that pushes right through to the last page.
