Overview

Stunning illustrations illuminate this beautifully conceived & intelligently executed contemporary psalter, a resource that presents Merton entirely as a source for daily prayer & contemplation. Prayer, prose & poetry are interwoven with graceful illustrations to form a spiritual tapestry.

What People Are Saying

Jonathan Montaldo
"A Book of Hours reveals in ways that I have never experienced the hidden wellspring of Merton's contemplative life and art. This is a gorgeous book, beautifully conceived and intelligently executed. Deignan has woven a tapestry of Merton's prayer, prose, and poetry at their most ardent so as to re-educate our awareness that God is Beautiful and most worthy of our daily praise. This five-star book will snugly fit the pocket of your heart."--(Jonathan Montaldo, editor of A Year with Thomas Merton)
Mary Margaret Funk
"A Book of Hours is faithful to the spirit of Thomas Merton, to the liturgy of hours, and to the One who is our heart's desire. The result is a contemporary psalter that holds us day after day in the embrace of Mystery."--(Mary Margaret Funk, OSB, author of Humility Matters)
Patrick Hart
"What a delight to contemplate Thomas Merton's A Book of Hours, compiled from the monk's enormous corpus of prose and poetry. Kathleen Deignan's selections and commentary draw the reader ever deeper into the mystery of God's love. A treasure trove to be prayerfully savored."--(Br. Patrick Hart, a monk of Gethsemani and Merton's last secretary)
Sylvia Boorstein
"Open any page of this wonderful book and you will find a mind-stopping, heart-catching phrase that will remind you, in Merton's unique way, that God is here, all around, right now, and in that moment everything will be different and you will be changed."--(Sylvia Boorstein, author of It's Easier Than You Think)

    Use As Intended

This book is a series of poems/meditations by a now deceased monk who gained prominence in the 1960s as a peace advocate. The writings have been collected, edited, formatted, and organized into a book of hours of the type used by persons living a institutional cloistered lifestyle (i.e. monks/nuns) for prayer at various times of the day. The book is thus divided into days of the week (Sunday through Saturday) and "hours" (Dawn, Day, Dusk, Night), then divided again into various subcategories (i.e. hymns, canticles, psalms, readings, etc.)

I picked up this book after skimming with the intention to use it as a prayer book of hours, citing my own trouble engaging in regular prayer (time constraints). This has worked for me wonderfully! I read it as a book of hours, skipping at times when I am unable to read. It is with me at all times so that I may read, re-read, contemplate, meditate and pray with assistance from Thomas Merton's wonderful words.

I recommend this book for anyone who seeks to pray/meditate/contemplate with regularity. This is not a book to read just once, put down, and maybe pick up again years from now. Know the words, feel them in your heart and soul, contemplate their meaning, and it will help you find peace and keep you centered through a hectic day!

Merton's Book of Hours moves as great poetry does

Merton's Book of Hours suggests that the monastic tradition of prayer and meditation at several times each day is beneficial to the not too ordinary lay person. If the reader is attuned to poetry and appreciates the particular beauties of nature, the short readings in both prose and his free verse will enrich from ten to thirty minutes of the literate reader's time, up to four times a day. The God Merton shares with us is not garbed in Biblical might and splendor but the immanent artist who makes nature and humanity good and beautiful, who feels for us and guides us to better life. The editor of this posthumous collection helpfully introduces Merton to all readers and provides full source references at the end of the book. It is a compact sized, finely illustrated and beautifully composed book.

    A contemplative book of prayer

A beautiful and inspiring book that beckons one to explore the power of prayer by focusing on the ancient teachings of contemplation that were lost for centuries. It is a different form of prayer...a set of teachings and a guide for the formation of conscience. Each reading brings new insight.

A different way of praying, but I would have welcomed a scripture reading with each day or hour.

    A reviewer

I received this through a book club and have highlighted my copy and written in the margins throughout. Now I am giving it to friends. It will be a book I will pray with over and over. Laramie, Wyoming
