Overview

A sterilized skull, a deranged forensics expert, a plunge into the deepest recesses of the criminal mind. In her most challenging case to date, Detective Chalice must turn to a madman to deliver a killer.
Chalice is called into action when an unconscious man is found in Central Park. Barely alive, John Doe is clad in a torn bed sheet and has sustained a life threatening wound. His body is covered in scars, a tapestry chronicling his life as a torture victim. Stranger still, a human skull lies just inches away.
In a case that closely resembles this summer's Gilgo Beach murder investigation, Chalice follows a trail bodies from New York City to The Long Island Pine Barrens and The Pilgrim State Psychiatric Hospital. Chalice has just two leads in this case, a skull that has been sterilized and found to be evidence free, and a comatose witness to a murder - tough odds, even for NYPD's best and brightest.

Editorial Reviews

Ann Loring

James Siegel
"Chalce is irresistible; a contempoary tour de force!"
Nelson DeMille
"Lawrence Kelter reminds me of an early Robert Ludlum."

    EXCELLENT

This is the best of the series so far. Great suspense and action. No cover page and no table of contents. The book shows 1181 pages and this is not correct. The pages turn 1 to 6 at a time. I estimate it to be between 500 to 650 pages.

    Kelter kept me guessing again!

I have read all the books in the Stephanie Chalice Mystery Series. I love one as much as the other! The Brain Vault held my interest all throughout. I couldn't wait to see what would unfold next. Reading this made me think of the bodies being found at Gilgo Beach on Long Island. Kelter makes everything so believable! He also adds humor which lightens the mood. I feel as though I know the characters. Another great read!

    GREAT!!!!!

This is her best ! Good mystery that keeps you guessing. I like the way she develops the characters, giving the reader little bits at a time. The characters all feel like real people, with faults and flaws. The heroine isnt a superhero, just a good cop. There is romance, but not the explicit sex like in "Dont Close Your Eyes". A great read for mystery fans like me.

    A must read!

I stumbled upon this author by accident with his first thriller Dont Close your Eyes and then read the 2nd installment of Chalice the detective in Ransom Beach-i have to tell you these 2 books blew me away-But the Brain Vault is by far the best of the three. The characters are all flawed and real but all share the same sickness-Obsessed with their careers in Law Enforcement-Chalice, the main character is certainly complex and has her share of dysfunctions due to her job, but make no mistake about it, she will not rest until the gruesome crime she is investigating is solved-In a similar style of Silence of the Lambs and Seven, the story keeps you on a rollercoaster of plot twists until the end. Forget trying to figure out what is going to happen, as Kelter sets you up and tears you down over and over again. Not for the fainthearted, this book uncovers a twisted dark side of humanity that needs to be brought to justice. But with the personality flaws of the main characters, you wonder how can they get to the bottom of whats going on when they cant even conquer their own demons? Cant wait for the next installment and I certainly smell a movie option in the near future as this series can easily hit the small or big screen . My only hope is they stay true to the book....P.S - I met Lawrence Kelter at a book signing a few years back and you would never think such a calm, collected, soft spoken author can create such a dark twisted world. Hes nothing short of brilliant.....

Humor and Horror - a fun read

The story kept me glued to this book; I just couldn't put it down. The variety of her characters went from sadistic, to tough, loveable, sympathetic, humorous, and romantic. I look forward to reading more from Lawrence Keller.

Best Psychological Thriller since The Silence of the Lambs

You've got to love this novel for everything it brings to the party: suspense, humor, forensics, and more. It was what I'd expect to see if Nelson DeMille & Janet Evanovich sat down to do an homage to Silence of the Lambs. The heroine is a bright, wisecracking young woman with Sixth Sense instincts. The plot resembles Thomas Harris' masterpiece; the villain has a sinister motive that is not revealed until the very end. I laughed and my heart pounded while I raced through this page turner. As good as any crime novel I've ever read and that says a lot!

Ended very abruptly. I almost 100% completely enjoyed this book

Ended very abruptly. I almost 100% completely enjoyed this book and its lively characters and action. I love psychological thrillers, and it certainly did not disappoint on that front. I had a hard time putting it down when I had to do other things. There were a few grammatical glitches, but the writing was great--until it ended so abruptly. I'm not used to e-books yet, and maybe if I had been reading a regular book I would have seen it coming, but it felt like I was just reading along and Bam! It was over. I thought at first my Nook was malfunctioning because it wouldn't go to the next page. (So sue me--I don't pay attention to the page count!) I am hesitant to read more by this author if this is a characteristic style. Loved everything else about the book, though, especially the strong female protagonist and the good relationship between her and her partner. I'm kind of torn on this one. Was it just me?
