Overview

THE VOW

In the shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, fortunes are made and lives lost during the silver boom on the Comstock Lode. In this wild and dangerous era, Rebekah Sinclair, a small town preacher’s daughter, and Rory Madigan, an impoverished Irish immigrant, vow eternal love. In their youthful naiveté, they believe that love can conquer all. They are mistaken. The cunning of an older man and the bigotry of Rebekah’s family tear them apart.

THE VENGEANCE

When they meet again, each believes the other broke their covenant. Rory has become a rich, influential man bent on revenge. Rebekah is the desperately unhappy wife of a corrupt politician. Madigan believes he hates her…but he’s never stopped loving her. Rebekah believes she fears him…but she’s never stopped loving him. Although still young, they have lost their innocent illusions and been tempered by the harshness of life in 1870’s Nevada. But are they strong enough to triumph over a ruthless, secret enemy intent on destroying them? Now their love and their very lives, as well as that of a child, hang in the balance.

Romantic Times - Jill Brager
"...a wonderful story of true and everlasting love. Rory and Rebekah's triumph over adversity adds elements of a saga and even a little taste of 'Far and Away' to a beautiful love story. SENSUAL."

Meet the Author

SHIRL HENKE lives in St. Louis, where she enjoys gardening in her yard and greenhouse, cooking holiday dinners for her family and listening to jazz. In addition to helping brainstorm and research her books, her husband Jim is “lion tamer” for their two wild young tomcats, Pewter and Sooty, geniuses at pillage and destruction.
Shirl has been a RITA finalist twice, and has won three Career Achievement Awards, an Industry Award and three Reviewer’s Choice Awards from Romantic Times.
“I wrote my first twenty-two novels in longhand with a ballpoint pen—it’s hard to get good quills these days,” she says. Dragged into the twenty-first century by her son Matt, a telecommunication specialist, Shirl now uses two of those “devil machines.” Another troglodyte bites the dust. Highly Recommended - Another Great Henke Romance

Rory Madigan and Rebekah Sinclair swear eternal love when he is 21 and she 17. This proves a vow easier to make than to keep. The result is that when they are separated both become bitter, feeling the other is to blame. Several years later, the two meet again. She is now a glittering political hostess and he a ruthless power broker. And although neither will admit it, they are still both deeply in love. I enjoyed the second half of the book more than the first because Rebekah has become stronger and because what separates them now is far more dangerous than her father who is a bit of a bigoted hypocrite (although he does repent) or even Amos Wells the rather nasty sicko she was forced to marry. They are caught in the middle of a high stakes political intrigue that might get them both killed. Not as much action as in most of Henke's other novels but a solid story and sensual love scenes. Worth a reader's time.
