#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand-new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire . . .

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile situation. Nevada isn't sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she's kidnapped by Connor "Mad" Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan's after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she's getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

This series start from popular author Andrews serves up a refreshing new magical society, excellent world-building, beguiling characters, and strong storytelling. The Osiris serum, discovered in 1863, activated latent human magical talents. In the novel’s alternate present, families with strong magical lineage are now dynasties called Houses, and they rule the world. Nevada Baylor of Houston’s Baylor Investigative Agency is from an ordinary family, meaning she has little magical talent and thus must rely on more mundane abilities to survive. Under contract to an influential House, she reluctantly accepts a mission that will make or break her family’s company. Along the way, she tangles with Mad Rogan, an incredibly powerful scion who renounced his House. Fighting her attraction to Mad Rogan at every step, Nevada must capture the bad guy, unsnarl layers of deception, and come to terms with her own magical heritage if she is to survive. The pace and plot start slowly but soon quicken. Romantic sparks and a tangled mystery make this a lively, impressive series debut. Agency: Nancy Yost Literary Agency. (Nov.)

Meet the Author

"Ilona Andrews" is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored two New York Times and USA Today bestselling series—the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and the romantic urban fantasy of The Edge—and are working on the next volumes for both. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

Forget about the whitewashed cover and the not-so-stellar title. This is a fun and good read, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. My favorite part, hands down, was Nevada’s voice and her relationship with her family. That felt like the emotionally truest part of the book, though I did also enjoy watching her struggle to understand the utter sociopath she has to work with. (The sociopath is also the love interest. I still haven’t decided how I feel about that, but I’m very glad Nevada rebuffed him [multiple times, and all the way up to the last few pages].) I liked that he seemed to have layers beyond powerful/gorgeous/rich/etc. He made jokes, and I got the feeling he was fond of gallows humor, but he was also practical to a fault. That practicality caused plenty of friction—not the sexy or good kind—between him and Nevada, and that was fascinating to watch. Nevada is fundamentally good, which is not usually my cup of tea. However, for this series she is going to be perfect. There is so much badness in the people and the other characters already that to see her struggle against the horrible outcomes that are threatened is wholly refreshing. As the narrator as well as the main character, she is our lifeline and our entertainment, and she plays both parts well. I also found the plot more compelling than I expected to. In my experience, characters who “have no choice” or are otherwise coerced into something they don’t want to do aren’t usually as boxed in as they should be to warrant that kind of despairing response. I didn’t get that from Nevada. She tried and failed to wiggle her way out of the inciting incident, and then she let everyone she spoke to know that she was doing what she did under protest. Of course, at a certain point she has to own that the stakes have been raised and that she has her own motives to continue on her path, but she does that quite well. I bought and related to her motives entirely. Overall: there were some weird parts—womanly-this and maleness-that, the mostly-forced-seeming sexual tension between Nevada and the sociopath—but I’ll definitely pick up the sequel when it comes out. (In e-book form, because ugh, that cover.)

Following the first-person point of view of Nevada, a 25 y/o P.I. in a magic infused version of contemporary Houston, the story mainly focuses on cracking the plot to destroy the city. As a secondary thread (but a strong one), it sets up the attraction between Nevada and Rogan--but if you're expecting anything along that line in the first third of the book, you'll be disappointed. The romance aspect of this book is set up to start a *romance series* not be a *romance novel* if you understand the distinction I'm trying to make.

Book is awesome. There's a hint of sexy in it but it isn't a fluffy romance novel at all. It's a fun read with a number of interesting character relationships and a twisty plot. Great fun. Goofy cover - especially considering the leads are pretty at odds most of the book. Though there is one scene which may have looked like that...way out of context.

I couldn't put it down. It was great from start to finish. I've had a dry book spell where nothing caught my interest and if i started a book i couldn't finish. This book has quenched that thirst cant wait to read more from her.

I wasn't sure I would like this one. It seemed heavy on the military. Turns out it is an excellent urban fantasy set in an alternate reality. The characters are strong and I am hoping the female lead stays that way. So far there is a great chemistry and lots of intrigue. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. This author duo really has amazing world building skills. They suck me in every time.

Absolutely loved everything about this book! I love the alternate universe Ilona has created in modern day Houston, TX. The magic that is a part of their life is not like the usual kind you read in novels, and that just gives the book an little something unique. Those who have magic are placed into classifications according to the level and strength of the magic the have. I also love the fact that there are "Houses" of those are well known Primes. What I admire the most is Nevada herself. She has her morals and limits and doesn't let herself be bullied or blackmailed into breaking them. She is such a firm and strong character in her convictions and had such an honest, upfront personality that is completely endearing. Definitely recommend this book (and author) to everyone. Can NOT wait for the next book in the series White Hot!

It's been a long time thst I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning because I could not put down a book. And then I wake up just to pick it up again. I love the world build of magic, and hierarchy of magic, and the growing obsession or affection for each other between the Nevada and Mad Rogan. Marvelous!

Forget the cheesy cover (please)...and the fact that this is mis-placed in the "romance section" (no offense to romance novels)..This is an excellent novel, everything you would expect from an Ilona Andrews book...magical, fast paced, characters that you care about (good or bad), family ties, humor...I understand that it will be only a three book trilogy, unlike her long going "Kate Daniels" series, however it is well worth the read....

I'm not sure why I waited so long to post a review of this book. I absolutely loved it. I was hesitant to start it, not sure why. I've never been disappointed by anything Ilona Andrews has written. The Kate Daniels series is one of my all time favorites. Every book they have written is fun, engaging, exciting without being condescending. And I am happy to say this book and the prospects this series brings already help with the sting of knowing Kate Daniels is coming to a close. I loved the world they've built. I love the characters, Nevada and Rogan are (dare I say it) magic. I've had favorite characters in their other books, but Rogan especially tops them all. He is the perfect mix of hot male mixed with a good person (though hidden deep.) The story line is seductive enough to make me pant for the days until the second book arrives, pass more quickly. I love the magic abilities in this world and how it's known and accepted. The character of Grandma is also at the top of my favorites. She's a blast to read. I can't wait to see what she does next. You won't regret reading this book, or surrendering to the wiles of these authors. It is guilty pleasure to the extreme.

Enjoyed the book. Took me until about mid-way through before I really grew to love Mad Rogan (although I found it annoying that she kept referring to him as Mad Rogan). Love their chemistry but was disappointed that this book only introduces the chemistry with very little acting upon it. However, it leads you to believe that hopefully Nevada will surrender to the relationship and give us readers what we really want. LOL. Good story but think our leading man needs a little more storyline that helps draw our his humanity so that he really doesn't keep coming off as a psycho with no feelings toward human life. One big downer for this series so far is the fact that it's been 8 months since the first book was released. I hate it when authors write series but wait a year to release each book.
