Read by Kimberly Alexis

In Burnt Offerings, Anita Blake has her hands full when an arsonist's fires begin taking out St. Louis's un-dead, and Jean-Claude, her rival and lover, faces dire accusations from a visiting delegation of vampires.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Anita Blake is the woman that the vampires call the "Executioner." She is part policewoman, part protector, and part monster. Can she be everything to everybody in a city where vampires, werewolves, and wereleopards roam freely about? Once again, Anita Blake's adventures take her into a world with strange characters, ancient spells, vampires, and the supernatural. Anita is her same old feisty self, ever determined to not let anyone-dead or alive-get the best of her. Sixth in the popular Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series, this title is missing the wonderful blend of romance, horror, and mystery that is present in the other novels. Burnt Offerings' mixture of genres does not congeal well. Horror abounds in this fast-paced novel; as the city burns around her, Anita must try to stop the torture and rape the Vampire Council inflicts upon her and her friends. Too much happens, making the novel hard to follow, and too many characters seeking revenge on what seems to be everyone makes the novel preternatural. A little less violence and revenge and more romance involving Anita, Jean-Claude, and ex-boyfriend Richard would have made this a much better read. VOYA Codes: 2Q 2P S (Better editing or work by the author might have warranted a 3Q, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
Library Journal
While a pyrokinetic arsonist targets the havens of St. Louis's legal vampire population, Anita Blake--the local expert on supernatural creatures--finds herself embroiled in a dangerous and deadly game of undead politics in defense of her lover, the city's Master Vampire. The sixth installment of Hamilton's popular "Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" series exposes the more vulnerable side of its tough-talking, hard-as-nails heroine. Filled with nonstop action, witty dialog, and steamy sex, this title will appeal to fans of Anne Rice and Tanya Huff.
Library Journal
This seventh entry in Hamilton's (www.laurellkhamilton.org) No. 1 New York Times best-selling "Vampire Hunter" series was first published in 1998 and introduces several of the series' future critical characters. Here, Anita chooses the vampire over the werewolf—to great consequence. Actress Kimberly Alexis (of Gilmore Girls fame) balances Anita's emotional seesaw with a voice husky with the hot anger that typifies Anita at this stage. She also effectively conveys the emotional landscape of the other characters: the fine line of love and hatred, the desire to be safe at any cost, and the price of leadership. The French accents are a bit heavy, but Alexis, who also reads the latest books in this series, has begun to wear the characters like a second skin. This title is a welcome addition to the audio Anitaverse, as are Bloody Bones (Bk. 5) and Killing Dance (Bk. 6), released simultaneously by Penguin on audio and also narrated by Alexis.—Jodi L. Meet the Author

Laurell K. Hamilton
Laurell K. Hamilton

Laurell K. Hamilton is a full-time writer and mother. Her bestselling Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novels include Narcissus in Chains, Obsidian Butterfly, Blue Moon, Burnt Offerings, The Killing Dance, Bloody Bones, The Lunatic Café, Circus of the Damned, The Laughing Corpse, and Guilty Pleasures. She is also the author of A Kiss of Shadows and A Caress of Twilight. She lives in a suburb of St. Louis with her family.

Biography

The vampire genre has enthralled readers ever since Bram Stoker introduced a certain Transylvanian count over a century ago. Since then vampires have been used as vehicles for everything from romantic novels to erotica to humor to the expected tales of terror. However, very few writers have combined all of these facets of the never-say-die vampire quite the way that Laurell K. Hamilton has.

Hamilton has not always been under the spell of undead things that go bump-and-grind in the night. When she was a young girl, her literary tastes were a bit more on the traditional side. "I wanted to be Louisa May Alcott, who wrote Little Women, because I had never read any science fiction, fantasy, or horror," she confessed in a podcast on Mayor Slay.com. "Then at 13 or 14 I found Robert E. Howard's short story collection [Pigeons From Hell]. It was the first horror, the first heroic fantasy, the first science fiction I'd ever read, and the moment I read that I knew that not only did I want to be a writer, but this is what I wanted to write."

Furthering Hamilton's burgeoning fascination with the fantastic, she discovered Anthony Masters's The Natural History of the Vampire at her high school library. Coupled with the ghost stories her grandmother had told her when she was a child and heavy doses of Hammer Horror movies from Great Britain, Hamilton was well on her way to creating a character that would only be rivaled by Buffy in the field of vampire slaying.

Hamilton first introduced vampire huntress Anita Blake in her third novel Guilty Pleasures. Blake is an unlikely combination of action hero, federal marshal, "necromancer," and lusty dame. Her exploits between the sheets and in the graveyard won Hamilton a rabid following hungry for something new in the well-traveled vampire genre.

Along with the kinds of scares normally associated with vampire stories, Hamilton's books are notable for their unflinching eroticism. Vampires have had a sexual lure since Stoker, but Hamilton particularly draws that aspect to the surface of her work as one of her creatures might draw blood from a victim. "I [want] a kiss to be so believable it gives the reader shivers," she says on her website. "Two things I do well are sex and violence, but I don't want gratuitous sex or violence. The sex and violence is only as graphic as need be. And never included unless it furthers the plot or character development."

Another unlikely trait of her books is humor, vampire tales classically being of the more solemn sort. However, a writer weaned on a book titled Pigeons From Hell is not likely going to shy away from wit. Consequently, her books have been consistently entertaining and fun, as well as creepy and sexy.

Hamilton has also brought her delicious combination of sex, humor, and frights to another series, this one more ingrained in dark fantasy than horror. Her faerie princess/P.I. Meredith Gentry made her debut in Kiss of Shadows in 2001 and has since sparked her own crowd-pleasing sword and sorcery meets pulp series.

Increasingly, the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry books have added more sexual content to their story lines, classifying both series in a new hybrid genre that blends romance, erotica, and paranormal fantasy. To judge from Hamilton's consistent appearance on the bestseller charts, readers find the mix spellbinding.

Good To Know

One thing you will never find in a Hamilton novel is a cliffhanger. She believes that cliffhangers unfairly tease readers who would then have to wait six months to a year to have some sense of resolution. As she said during an interview with Bill Thompson of Eye On Books, "Every book is a full meal. All the way from the appetizer to the dessert, so that you come away feeling that you've had an experience... and at the end you have that satisfied, full feeling."

Before Laurell K. Hamilton made a full-time career of blood, guts, murder, and mayhem, she had more humane pursuits -- she volunteered at an animal shelter where she played with unwanted pets.

In our interview, Hamilton shared some fun and fascinating facts about herself with us:

"I am incredibly stubborn. Telling me I cannot do something, especially if you cite the fact that I am a girl, will make me want to do it more and do it better."

"I am not my characters. We have some of the same traits in common, but we are very different people."

"Everything inspires me. Getting up in the morning, walking the dogs, watching a music video. Inspiration comes from everywhere."

"I love animals. I own four dogs, two of whom are rescues. In fact, Jimmy is with us because they were going to gas him if we didn't take him with us. As an older dog his chances of finding a home were fairly slim. But he has been a wonderful addition to our home."

"I like spending time with my family and friends. Something I often feel I do not do enough of. But there are only so many hours in a day."

"I like to read other people's works. I love reading cozy or historical mysteries when I can."

"I enjoy interacting with fans at planned public events. I enjoy talking to them and have met many wonderful people."

    Laurell K Hamilton Books

I have to thank a stranger for introducing me to this amazing author's books. I was actually at a Barnes an Noble looking for another author in the Sci-Fi section several years ago. The lady (who was a customer herself) asked me what I was looking for and I told her and she said that if I liked that author to try Laurell K Hamilton. I bought the first book, read it in one day, called into work sick, bought the other 8 that were out at the time, and I've been hooked ever since. I resently just convinced my boyfriend to read the first book and he is addicted also. So GENTLEMEN, this series can be enjoyed by you also, it is not just for women! So, thank you awesome stranger for introducing me to one of my favorite authors!

    Not a fan

I have tried to get into this series, but I have a hard time not becoming annoyed with Anita and her negative sarcasm. It really is difficult to follow her descriptions of the magical events. I was not impressed with the uncomfortable violent sexual acts and crimes in this book.

    Dragging

I love the book after I have skimmed through a few chapters of the wrap up of the previous book and the descriptions of the men in her lives in different angles. It is a little annoying to read the same description of the same charater over and over again in the same novel. The different angles I understand, but the same verbatim. annoying!

Ok I personaly hate reading I just hated it. My good friend Alex prity much hit me with the lunitic cafe. I was like what is this, she told me to just read it you will love it. After reading proably about 100 pages in a hour, a whole new level of reading for me I was hooked. you hang on every word not knowing if she is going to live or die. It is awsome, parents if your child listions to rock music or plays Role-playing games hand them this book there is a good chance they will take it and run with it.

    The Plot Thickens...

After a while, the dialog and plots all sound the same. Despite that, I absolutely love the progression of these characters through every book, and have a hard time putting them down. Some of my favorite characters of all time, and the right balance of paranormal and passion, make this a great series!

If you enjoy Anita Blake, I bet you will also love Riley Jensen in "Full Moon Rising" by Keri Arthur!

    GREAT

I came late to this series. But since I started reading the Anita Blake series, I have not been able to stop. This book like the ones that precede it keep you trapped in a delicious web of mystery, supernatural and sensuality. I can't read these books fast enough! Burnt Offerings has many new characters the more to fall in love with. I highly recommend this book and the series in general!

    Love this series

This series is similar to the Sookie Stackhouse novels. You wonder how someone can keep going through what they do, and then this author truly comes up with something different. It keeps your attention throughout the whole book.

Tough As Nails with Sexy Appeal and a no BS Attitude!

Everything about the Anita Blake novels ooze with anticipation and captivate all readers if you truly enjoy a great thriller vampire novel(s). Know what you are about to get into because Laurell K Hamilton has yet again caught my attention in the Anita Blake world. I have read the series once before (up until the book "Micah") and I have started again these past few months. I always come back and learn new details of the characters she has created and I am always intrigued of the situations they are placed in. Burnt Offerings is merely the 7th book but it brings several mixed emotions and views of a world that only Anita Blake can be appropriately placed into. Betrayal, pain, envy, lust, love, confusion and sadness are felt towards many of the characters considering the horrible position the council places Jean-Claude and his people in as well as the bond he shares with Anita and Richard. The continuation of the pain and anger between the triumvirate is strong and proves to be tight as well as allows them to grow close. This book is a must read before the plot begins to go in a more S&M feel rather than entertainment of a powerful story of a woman in a tough lifestyle. Better start with the first book so the reader can truly appreciate the lifestyle and emotion.

Book 7... starting to feel like book 200...

I liked this book, don't get me wrong. However after seven books now, it seems the plots are all the same. Someone is being interviewed in Anita's office at Animator's Inc., she gets called to some peternatural police investigation, somehow the monsters are involved, all the action happens in the second to the last chapter, and is wrapped up in a few paragraphs in the last chapter. That's the way I feel this and the previous 6 have been.

I still plan on keeping up with the series, it just seems that it's taken a long while to get something good off the ground. And after seven books the cast is there, the story is interesting, and there's so much to go off of - it's just not gripping.

I'm told with the introduction of Asher and Nathaniel that stories from this point are going to start moving in a different direction, which I think at this point I am pretty open to with this series. I need something new to take my interest.

    A fantastic series

If you like supernatural thrillers with a touch of romance and the erotic then this series is for you. The main character has such a complex personality that seems to always be evolving. Hamilton will draw you in from the beginning with Guilty Pleasures and never let you go.
