Overview

Twelve-year-old Taylor is new to the city of Toronto, and he is fascinated by the multicultural nature of his school. When his new friend Simon, whose family is from Korea, talks him into taking a shortcut across a junkyard, he finds a colony of feral cats. So begins his big project caring for the cats. The junkyard security guard, Mr. Singh, a Sikh from India, decides Taylor is a good kid and lets him enter the junkyard through the main gate. Taylor sometimes brings his other friends, from other countries, when he checks on the cats. Then one of his favorite cats gets hurt, and Taylor enlists the help of a feral cat rescue organization. When the entire colony is threatened by construction, he needs the help of the organization, his friends, and some of the animals. Heartwarming, fun and informative, this is a good book for kids because Taylor takes action and the reader learns a lot about different cultures and about cats. The plot is absorbing and the characters are lovable, especially the animals. Reviewer: Sue Poduska

"I don't like cats," Simon said. "They're dirty."

"They're not dirty," I said, defending Blinky and all of catkind. "They wash themselves all the time."

"They wash themselves with their tongue," he said and made a face like he was grossed out. "But if you love cats, then this is the place to be. There are dozens and dozens of them here. I'll show you."

My desire to get out of the junkyard wasn't as strong as my curiosity. Why would there be dozens of cats here?
