Overview

St. Patrick's Day, New York City. Everyone is celebrating, but everyone is in for the shock of his life. Born into the heat and hatred of the Northern Ireland conflict, IRA man Brian Flynn has masterminded a brilliant terrorist act - the seizure of Saint Patrick's Cathedral. Among his hostages: the woman Brian Flynn once loved, a former terrorist turned peace activist. Among his enemies: an Irish-American police lieutenant fighting against a traitor inside his own ranks and a shadowy British intelligence officer pursuing his own cynical, bloody plan. The cops face a booby-trapped, perfectly laid out killing zone inside the church. The hostages face death. Flynn faces his own demons, in an electrifying duel of nerves, honor, and betrayal.

Meet the Author

Nelson DeMille
Nelson DeMille

Nelson DeMille is the author of fourteen previous novels. He lives on Long Island, New York.

Biography

Nelson DeMille has a dozen bestselling novels to his name and over 30 million books in print worldwide, but his beginnings were not so illustrious. Writing police detective novels in the mid-1970s, DeMille created the pseudonym Jack Cannon: "I used the pen name because I knew I wanted to write better novels under my own name someday," DeMille told fans in a 2000 chat.

Between 1966 and 1969, Nelson DeMille served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. When he came home, he finished his undergraduate studies (in history and political science), then set out to become a novelist. "I wanted to write the great American war novel at the time," DeMille said in an interview with January magazine. "I never really wrote the book, but it got me into the writing process." A friend in the publishing industry suggested he write a series of police detective novels, which he did under a pen name for several years.

Finally DeMille decided to give up his day job as an insurance fraud investigator and commit himself to writing full time -- and under his own name. The result was By the Rivers of Babylon (1978), a thriller about terrorism in the Middle East. It was chosen as a Book of the Month Club main selection and helped launch his career. "It was like being knighted," said DeMille, who now serves as a Book of the Month Club judge. "It was a huge break."

DeMille followed it with a stream of bestsellers, including the post-Vietnam courtroom drama Word of Honor (1985) and the Cold War spy-thriller The Charm School (1988) Critics praised DeMille for his sophisticated plotting, meticulous research and compulsively readable style. For many readers, what made DeMille stand out was his sardonic sense of humor, which would eventually produce the wisecracking ex-NYPD officer John Corey, hero of Plum Island (1997) and The Lion's Game (2000).

In 1990 DeMille published The Gold Coast, a Tom Wolfe-style comic satire that was his attempt to write "a book that would be taken seriously." The attempt succeeded, in terms of the critics' response: "In his way, Mr. DeMille is as keen a social satirist as Edith Wharton," wrote The New York Times book reviewer. But he returned to more familiar thrills-and-chills territory in The General's Daughter, which hit no. 1 on The New York Times' Bestseller list and was made into a movie starring John Travolta. Its hero, army investigator Paul Brenner, returned in Up Country (2002), a book inspired in part by DeMille's journey to his old battlegrounds in Vietnam.

DeMille's position in the literary hierarchy may be ambiguous, but his talent is first-rate; there's no questioning his mastery of his chosen form. As a reviewer for the Denver Post put it, "In the rarefied world of the intelligent thriller, authors just don't get any better than Nelson DeMille."

Good To Know

DeMille composes his books in longhand, using soft-lead pencils on legal pads. He says he does this because he can't type, but adds, "I like the process of pencil and paper as opposed to a machine. I think the writing is better when it's done in handwriting."

In addition to his novels, DeMille has written a play for children based on the classic fairy tale "Rumpelstiltskin."

DeMille says on his web site that he reads mostly dead authors -- "so if I like their books, I don't feel tempted or obligated to write to them." He mentions writing to a living author, Tom Wolfe, when The Bonfire of the Vanities came out; but Wolfe never responded. "I wouldn't expect Hemingway or Steinbeck to write back -- they're dead. But Tom Wolfe owes me a letter," DeMille writes.

one of the best (of the best)

until i was given 'cathedral' by demille, i had never heard of this author. i started reading this book as a fill in until the book i wanted arrived by mail. well, when i began, i couldn't put it down. i quickly forgot the book i was waiting for and after i finished, i looked up this author, read everything i could get my fingers on and haven't looked back since.

want a trip without leaving your chair? how about a fantasy that could happen? this book has everything: fantasy, mysticism, horror, characters you might meet on the street, nightmares without sleeping, the works. i will tell you one thing. after reading this book, every st. patrick's day i wait to see if st. patrick's in nyc is still there, in one piece !

nelson demille's masterpiece. read this and you'll read all of his others but word of caution. this might just be tomorrows head lines today!

Cathedral -Exciting Tale of IRA Terrorism Coming to NYC (written 2 decades prior to 9/11)

I have read at least five other DeMille books. This one has many of the hallmarks of his later books, but somehow I felt the first 100 or so pages dragged a little, especially when compared to the middle and end of the book. The overall plot development is very good, which is usual with the author, interweaving developments among different characters, but always keeping the reader guessing. I too grew up in NYC but not being Roman Catholic I have never been inside the impressive building. However, after reading the book, I might look for an opportunity to go inside to see it with my own eyes. Some of DeMille's tricks from other books are also utilized in this book, such as his use of a dab of science fiction in a limited but strategic way. Even though the two drawings of the church are included in the front of the book, both plan views, the overall configuration is still confusing, and a 3-D perspective sketch would have been very helpful. This would have been of value particularly during the last section of the book, because it was very hard to figure out exactly where Leary was in the choir loft relative to all of the others. I have the impression that DeMille has taken a certain amount of license in utilizing some of the history/mythology of early Ireland, such as that of Fionn mac Cumhaill or Finn MacCummal as he is called in the book, into the story. All in all, it is an enjoyable read.

    I Also Recommend:

    Action at its best

WOW what an amazing story and LOOOOONG. DeMille does a beautiful job depicting the thought process and the extremisum of the Irish Republic Army. He clearly visualize how true to their cause they are and to what leghths they will go through for their people. Using NYC's St. Patty's cathedral on St Pat's day, he draws in a large political arena of not only the US but all other countries and agencies that can possibly be involved or help with the cause to get what they want. There's so much action you'll be unable to put the book down. However, there were a few places that was confusing as to who and what person was speaking.

    I really enjoyed this book.

I read this close to ten yrs ago. I still recall how much I enjoyed reading this page turner. It also took my attention since it had an Irish influence. I have visited St Patrick's Catherdal in NYC on more than one occasion. If I recall correctly this is the catherdal that is in this great book.

    Too long

The story was good but I couldn't tell the men from the women when the narrator did the irish accent. It always seemed that the irish people ended every sentence with a question mark. Get the abridged version if you order it.

    super ... duper!

want to read a book that has it all? looking for a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat (and thensome)? then read this! i usually read a book and then move onto another but this one is different.
when i first was given this demille book to read i thought it just another action/adventure book but boy was i wrong. my intro to demille made me a lifetime admirer of mr. nelson demille and between you and me? every st. patrick's day i wait to see if it happens. what happens? you just have to read it to believe it. like wow and double wow! hollywood is missing out on what could be a double whammy of a movie (if it follows the book from beginning to end; head to toe). every author has their masterpiece and this is mr. demille's. excellent and most excellenct!

    ONE OF DEMILLE'S BEST

St. Patrick's Day in NYC is a fantastic party and I can't think of a scarier act than this. What a thriller, from beginning to end! BRAVO!

The Best DeMille of them all....

I have read every one of DeMille's books - coming from NY, his 'scenery' is always familiar. Hands down, my favorite book by him, with a close second being Charm School. My Irish heritage made it a tense read for me, the sadness at watching the Cathedral and it's people taken hostage, but the pride of watching Flynn strike a blow for his freedom and the freedom of his country! Sure - the IRA is technically the bad guys, but still - they are fighting for Irish freedom, makes it a tough sell. Read this book OVER AND OVER!

    Sacrilege?

Nelson de Mille never fails to give us a fast paced, action packed yarn. As the name suggests this action takes place in a cathedral, St. Patricks Cathedral in New York. It revolves around a siege situation; the hostages are a cardinal, a priest, a diplomat and a Northern Ireland peace leader.

    a real hair raiser

This is the first DeMille book I've ever read, but not the last. He held me to the pages from beginning to end. I found myself shouting outloud when the escape was blundered in the basement and prayed that someone would come to the rescue of these poor people. This is an all-nighter. Be prepared to have plenty of spare time on your hands, because you won't want to put it down once you've started.

Long Live the Cathedral . . . how long?

Cathedral is my second DeMille read, and as a native of New York city, I found this book adventuresome and exciting. The architecture of St. Patrick's Cathederal along with the descriptions of the interior and the innards were very fasnicating. The role the Irish history played in with the St. Patrick's Day parade is well decipted. The events that the Fenians and Finn MacCummal instigated follows the centuries old struggle between the Irish people and the British government has been enlightening. If I had read this while still living in NYC, I'd given the Cathedral a much more thorough appreciation of its Art Treasures, passageways and the lofts and crane my neck up further to study the towers. Oh well! Recommend read for any who likes excitement, suspense and whodunits.
