Meet the Author

Nora Roberts
Nora Roberts

Nora Roberts is the number-one New York Times-bestselling author of more than 150 novels, including High Noon, Angels Fall, Blue Smoke, and Northern Lights. She is also the author of the bestselling futuristic suspense series written under the pen name J. D. Robb. There are more than 280 million copies of her books in print.

Biography

Not only has Nora Roberts written more bestsellers than anyone else in the world (according to Publishers Weekly), she’s also created a hybrid genre of her own: the futuristic detective romance. And that’s on top of mastering every subgenre in the romance pie: the family saga, the historical, the suspense novel. But this most prolific and versatile of authors might never have tapped into her native talent if it hadn't been for one fateful snowstorm.

As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.

For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."

Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.

Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."

Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."

Good To Know

Roberts still lives in the same Maryland house she occupied when she first started writing -- though her carpenter husband has built on some additions. She and her husband also own Turn the Page Bookstore Café in Boonsboro, Maryland. When Roberts isn't busy writing, she likes to drop by the store, which specializes in Civil War titles as well as autographed copies of her own books.

Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

Highly Recommend - you must check it out!

I recommend the whole series of the JD Robb "in Death" books. I bought a couple of paperbacks years ago but now that I have a Nook, I decided to start at the beginning and read all of them in order. The books can be read independently but they are tied together and I like to see the progression. I never tire of reading about Eve Dallas.

    more from this reviewer

I believe this may be one of my favorite In Death novels.

Ceremony started out really slowly. As a matter of fact, I almost put it down several times. For me this is terribly odd. The writing style of this book was a bit different than others in the series and actually there were quite a lot more players than usual.
The book begins with Eve at the funeral of another cop, Frank. Frank is a good cop and a very close friend of Feeney - and we know how much Eve love Feeney. At the funeral, Frank's granddaughter, Alice, slips a note into Eve's pocket asking for a meeting. Eve wonders about this but she begins to wonder even more the next day when Captain Whitney calls her into his office and orders her to perform an investigation of Frank - before Internal Affairs does. Eve doesn't like it but what can she do? Of course, she immediately requests the assistance of Feeney. Feeney is denied - she must also clear any potential involvement from him.

    Kept me up at night!

I'm new to this series. I really enjoy it (I love Eve and Roarke) but this one gave me nightmares!!! I guess that says a lot about NR's talent as a writer. This series is a nice change from the romance. I'll keep reading (and possibly sleeping with the light on).

Nora Roberts as JD Robb - Death Series is good reading.

I am working my way through the Death series and Ceremony in Death was good, but not one of my favorites so far. I can't say why it didn't grip me like the others in the series..... It was not bad, it just wasn't as good as many of the others.

    Jennifer Wardrip - Personal Read

Another winner in the "...IN DEATH" series, CEREMONY IN DEATH finds Eve Dallas dealing with things that mere science can't explain. Although Dallas believes that evil comes in the form of men, you'll get a little surprise when you find out exactly how other characters from the series, including Roarke and Dr. Mira, feel about it.

Another great read, with high emotion, action, suspense, and romance.

    This is an awesome series!

Nora's Good, but J.D. is Better

I love these books, I've started re-reading the series AGAIN because I wanted to 'remember' how it all started and because I think the older ones are better than than the newer ones...J.D. is starting to write more like Nora, but the books are still worth the read.

    great book!

haha for me, this one was by far one of the more suspensful..i guess it may be because i'm more used to the reality and then she throws in the supernatural or the fantasy type things which makes it more interesting..it's a good one...along with all of J.D. Robb's or Nora Robert's other books

JD ROBB does it again and again!!!

It was a complete surprise when I found out that the author JD Robb was really Nora Roberts. Ms. Roberts romance stories are the best ever printed and yet she surpasses herself when she writes as JD Robb. The suspensful and thrilling mysteries that bring the character of Lt. Eve Dallas to life keep the reader captured until the very end. Whether you have read the first in this series or the very latest, you will not be disappointed. Lt. Dallas was the product of a miserable childhood and because of this she becomes a police officer in the futuristic city of New York in the year 2050. Each book finds Lt. Dallas, Rourke (her husband), her police team and some friends winding their way through yet another heart stopping murder mystery. In each book Eve continues to fight for those who 'can no longer stand for themselves' and stand she does!! Each book is complete unto itself and yet, as I did, I believe that you will find yourself seeking to read them all. To help you know the order they have been released, I have included them: Naked In Death, Glory In Death, Immortal In Death, Rapture In Death, Ceremony In Death, Vengeance In Death, Holiday In Death, Conspiracy In Death, Loyalty In Death, Witness In Death, Judgment In Death, Betrayal In Death, Seduction In Death, Reunion in Death, Purity in Death and Immitation In Death released in August, 2003. Enjoy them all -- you'll never be sorry.

I really used to hate futuristic books and I bought Naked in Death not knowing it was set in the future. When I found out, I put off reading it for months until finally I had nothing else to read. Once I read it, I loved it and I got hooked on the whole series. Ceremony in Death is one of my favorites, but all the others are great.

    A Definate Pleasure

I have never been much to read series, but this is a definate pleasure. J.D. Robb has taken a strong female character from the future that allows the reader to relate to the struggles and challenges that she goes through in each story. I am now on the fifth of the series and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next.

    I love these books!

Of all the series I have read, this series is my absolute favorite! I picked up the first book in the store without realizing it was a book set in the future. I don't like futuristic books at all, I was looking for a book about cops. After I started reading this series I could not stop! These are the best books I have ever read and I love the characters. Eve Dallas and Roarke are absolutely perfect together! Peabody and Mavis are great friends and Summerset is wonderful! I can't wait for the next book in this series and I hope they never stop coming out!!!!!
