Overview

Portland homicide detective Skin Kadash just wants to survive cancer treatment so he can get back to the work he loves. When his partner tries to drag him into an unofficial investigation of a series of deaths, he’s not interested — he’s dead-dog sick and doesn’t need the grief — until she reveals the victims all suffered from cancer themselves, and all had one thing in common with Skin. His oncologist.

The deaths are all apparent suicides; the police have closed the book on them. Then a mysterious young woman, daughter of the first victim, surfaces and insists the dead men were all murdered. Before her story can be probed more deeply, she disappears, leaving Kadash with no support from the cops and little to go on except a nagging belief the missing woman knew more than she revealed.

Kadash is left to chase elusive leads among the bitter and broken widows of the dead men. Struggling with his own illness and with a growing rift between himself and his partner, Kadash finds himself entangled in a web of resentment, jealousy, and deceit. Ultimately, he finds that not is he only seeking a missing woman and the truth about the dead men, but also the meaning of his own life in the face of his impending mortality.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Irascible homicide detective Thomas "Skin" Kadash battles cancer while drawn into investigating a string of suicides with a common link in Cameron's thinly plotted second novel. Officially on medical leave from the Portland, Ore., police department, Skin is called to a crime scene by his partner, Det. Susan Mulvaney, when she discovers that the deceased was being treated by Skin's oncologist and wasn't the first of the doctor's patients to kill themselves. A list of five men-including several who have already committed suicide-surfaces, but when the police look into the deaths, there's little to suggest they weren't the last acts of men with terminal illnesses. Unconvinced, Skin launches his own unofficial investigation, while trying to withstand the pain of bladder cancer. Though Cameron (Lost Dog) uses the moody Northwest locale to his advantage, the uneven plot and thoroughly dislikable protagonist make for a disappointing read. (Dec.)

Library Journal

"Skin" Kadash, a Portland, OR, homicide detective and cancer victim, is asked by his partner to look over her notes on three suicides and view the scene of the fourth. All four men suffered from cancer and went to the same doctor, who also happens to be Kadash's physician. Rising crime fiction star Cameron (Lost Dog) has Kadash take a wisecracking, cynical approach to his situation, and this results in a very humane, personal investigation in which our protagonist must navigate the dangerous shoals of police office politics and the ugly fact that someone wants him gone permanently. Highly recommended for all collections.

“Dirty and visceral and intricate, … it engages the reader on an emotional as well as literary level.”

I really liked this book, esp the lead character ...

I really liked this book, esp the lead character - "Skin". This is the 1st B.C. book I've read & "Skin" is just so damn down-to-earth & witty. You get to see so much of what's extraordinary & ordinary about him as he unravels the case. Whether true or not, I had the feeling as I read that at least parts of the story might have been autobiographical. There was just some detail that seemed more personal than relevant to the storyline.

All that said, I would have given a 4-star rating, but I had some issues that resulted in a sml rating reduction. There were a lot of characters involved & I found myself occasionally weary from trying to sort that out ... a personal issue, I know. It didn't ring true at all for me that police investigators would be so ready to accept suicide as "obvious" with the coincident circumstances. There were more-than-should-be-expected places where word usage (or word forms) seemed to have escaped any editing or proofreading attention. However, none of the above kept me from buying "Day One" & "County Line". :-)

P.S. 1 tiny final comment - The detail of Skin's birthmark on his neck & the repeat references to it seemed non-contributory & strangely discomforting for some odd reason.
