Overview

I’m not your average hero. I actually wasn’t your average anything. Just a poor guy working an after-school job at a South Beach shoe repair shop to help his mom make ends meet. But a little magic changed it all.

It all started with a curse. And a frognapping. And one hot-looking princess, who asked me to lead a rescue mission.

There wasn’t a fairy godmother or any of that. And even though I fell in love along the way, what happened to me is unlike any fairy tale I’ve ever heard. Before I knew it, I was spying with a flock of enchanted swans, talking (yes, talking!) to a fox named Todd, and nearly trampled by giants in the Everglades.

Don’t believe me? I didn’t believe it either. But you’ll see. Because I knew it all was true, the second I got CLOAKED.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
As she did in Beastly and A Kiss in Time, Flinn mixes traditional fairy tales with a modern setting in a romance that is clever but not always compelling. When the beautiful princess of Aloria visits the fancy South Beach hotel where kind, 17-year-old Johnny toils in his family's shoe-repair shop, she transforms his monotonous life. The princess promises to marry him if he can find her brother, who a witch has transformed into a frog. Borrowing details from such stories as "The Elves and the Shoemaker" and "The Frog Prince," among others, Flinn sets Johnny on an adventure involving talking animals (actually bewitched humans called "used-to-bes"), greedy giants, and a cloak that can transport Johnny and his best friend Meg anywhere they wish. Johnny and Meg face various villains and tests, from a relentless witch and her goony son to a park ranger who threatens to sell the frog prince on eBay. But readers may tire of the endless cloak hopping; they will have long guessed the book's conclusion, including who Johnny really loves and what really happened to his long-lost father. Ages 12–up. (Feb.)
Children's Literature
If you want to return to fairy-tale land, this book is right up your alley. Johnny, a shoe cobbler, works nonstop to keep his family shoe repair shop afloat after his father's mysterious disappearance. His less than exciting life takes a sudden turn when he meets a beautiful princess visiting South Beach. Johnny has been secretly working on designing his own shoes. If the princess would endorse one if his designs maybe Johnny wouldn't have to worry about money anymore. But the princess has her own agenda. She wants Johnny to rescue her brother, an arrogant prince who has been turned into a frog by an evil witch. What is his reward for this noble act of bravery? Johnny will get her hand in marriage. He embarks on a wild adventure, but in order to complete his quest, Johnny has to believe in talking animals, giants, witches, magic and most of all, true love. Flinn has quirky characters, a touch of good humor, and has brilliantly tied unexpected quotes about shoes into the story. Young readers will certainly enjoy this book, but teens may lose interest. The numbers of fairy-tales crammed into one novel becomes overwhelming and too predictable. Flinn does a great job with giving readers a very sweet romance, constant action, and encourages us to think outside the box. In the end, Johnny shows young readers fairy-tales come true. Reviewer: Lisa Kuehne
VOYA
Johnny is struggling to make ends meet in his family shoe repair business, located in the lobby of a ritzy South Beach hotel, and secretly harbors dreams of making his own designer footwear. He is frustratingly oblivious to the romantic potential of his friendship with Meg, and instead hopes to win both wealth and the hand of a glamorous princess by helping to locate her missing brother, who has been turned into a frog by an evil witch. Throw in a cloak of teleportation, a pair of earbuds that allow the wearer to converse with bespelled animals who used to be human, and a couple of hungry giants, and you have the makings of an adventure. The author skillfully weaves aspects of over a half dozen fairy tales, including The Frog Prince and The Elves and the Shoemaker, into her narrative, but the end result falls far short of her best work. Flinn is a superior writer of realistic fiction for teens, and she has previously struck gold by doing modern-day revamps of classic fairy tales. Her newest effort, however, has neither the verisimilitude of the former nor the magic of the latter. Based purely on the subject matter and success of her previous novels, Cloaked should still have a wide, if not fully satisfied, audience. Reviewer: Sean Rapacki
School Library Journal
Gr 6–9—Flinn reimagines a fairy-tale world in her latest novel. Teenaged Johnny works as a cobbler in his mother's shoe repair shop in a posh hotel in South Beach. He spends his days with his friend Meg and designs his own line of shoes while dreaming of wealth to free his family from the confines of poverty. Unexpectedly, the striking Princess Victoriana of Aloria comes to the swanky Miami hotel for a royal visit. The super-hot partying princess pleads for Johnny's help in finding her missing brother, and offers of money and a royal marriage convince him to take her seriously—even when she explains that the prince has been turned into a frog. With the aid of a magical cloak and some headphones that allow him to hear animals speak, Johnny embarks on a journey wherein he encounters talking swans, a fox named Todd, and two angry giants. When he lands in hot water with an evil witch bent on destroying him, Meg comes to his rescue. The pair journey from South Beach to Key West, to Europe, and to Manhattan; and in the end, Johnny finds wealth, fame, and true love. Flinn cleverly plays on some lesser-known fairy tales to make this book a fun, romantic adventure with likable characters. Rapid action and amusing situations make it a quick read that will easily entice even reluctant readers.—Tara Kehoe, Plainsboro Public Library, NJ
Kirkus Reviews

A warmhearted, goofy and occasionally quite silly tale—tales, really— featuring17-year-old Johnny, a poor but honest shoemaker in a luxury hotel on Miami's South Beach who dreams of designer glory and keeping the electricity on. Who should breeze into his hotel but Victoriana, princess of Aloria, complete with a French accent and a hint of magic. Her "bruzzer" is missing! He's been turned into a frog! Johnny must help! What follows is a neatly nested series of fairy-tale mashups. Flinn cleverly uses quotes from the originals as chapter headings, from "The Shoemaker and the Elves" and "The Princess and the Frog" to "The Wild Swans" (which now live in that luxury hotel), "The Firebird" and others. Johnny's best friend Meg has a little magic of her own, and readers will probably want to reach into the pages and smack Johnny silly as he steadfastly misses the signals she sends. The friends proceed through this appealing, magic- and mishap-laced adventure, and it all ends quite nicely, as told in Johnny's clueless but endearing voice. The original tales are explicated briefly at the end. (Fractured fairy tales. 10 & up)

    Good book!

This story is a retaling of The Frog Prince with a twist. I really like the whole concept of the story and how Ms. Flinn modernized it. She did a great job of capturing all of the classic story while mixing in some great new drama.

Johnny works lots of hours just to help support him and his mom, but when a princess comes into town with a crazy story asking him for help he is not sure what to do. She throws money at him and the promise of marriage if he helps. Knowing that the money and marriage would help his mother and their situation, he agrees to it, seeking out a prince who has turned into a frog. She gives him magically devices to help him on his journey. But what he finds on this journey is what he least expected.

I love classic tales. So when I received this book I knew I loved it. And loved it I did. Johnny was a hard working man who was desperate for money. Being so young and working so many hours just to help with bills really made me admire him. He didn't like it when his mother worried and was very mature for his age.

The classic tale of the frog prince was a good re-tailing. I enjoyed Johnny;'s adventure in seeking the prince. He ran into all crazy animals that spoke, giants, and bad witches. Accompanying on this journey was his best friend Meg, who wasn't all what she seemed. She too also has secrets up her sleeve and only one that really mattered to Johnny.

The love interest in the book was one I found myself disappointed with. While I was glad that Johnny finally realized who he loved, I was upset at the way that she acted. I felt like she was selfish and shouldn't had thrown it at his face like that. But in the end it all work out, so I was happy with that.

A yummy blend of fairy tales!

Johnny Marco works at his family's shoe repair shop in a fancy Miami hotel. It's tough work, but he has to do it to help his mom pay the bills for their apartment. Then one day famous Alorian princess Victorianna stays at the hotel and asks Johnny to repair her broken shoe. Upon returning it to her, she asks him to help her find her kidnapped brother. Johnny finds it hard to say no to the beautiful princess and agrees to help. But this is no ordinary case, and Johnny gets a lot more adventure than he bargained for! With the help of some magical items and his best friend Meg, Johnny travels all over Florida and back in search of a prince-turned-frog.

If you've never read Alex Flinn, but you love a good fairy tale retelling, start with this book! She has previously written Beastly, a high school version of Beauty and the Beast (and a soon-to-be-movie), and A Kiss In Time, a modernization of Sleeping Beauty. I totally loved those two books and got swept away in this one as well. Cloaked includes many fairy tales, but the big ones are The Frog Prince and The Elves and the Shoemaker. A combo that works out surprisingly well! There was plenty of whimsical magic and non-stop action. Putting the old fairy tales into modern day Miami was fantastic and well thought out. The voices for each of the characters were excellent, their accents sometimes making me laugh. I thought all of the different fairy tales would add up to be too much, but they were small and sweet and added to the adventure as a whole. Flinn ties up all loose ends into a neat little package that left me feeling feeling complete at the end of the book. A fun read!

I LUV ALEX FLINN! She is an amazing author who puts a twist on fairy tales. She makes her books feel like you are there in the story. She makes fairy tales interesting for older teens instead of feeling like a 6 year old. Dont stop writing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WASTE OF TIME!

Review brought to you by OBS staff member Annabell

Have you ever read a story and when you closed it, came to the conclusion that you had wasted so much of your valuable time even though it might have only been a few hours? That is how I felt with Cloaked. I was completely under-whelmed and left disappointed at the author’s attempt of yet another fairy tale story retelling.

Cloaked follows seventeen year old Johnny, who oddly enough, aspires to be a shoe designer. Currently, he is working in the family business of shoe repair which is located within a hotel in South Beach, Florida. He works sixteen hours a day (it’s summer) to help his mom pay bills since his dad had gone missing years before. But even with Johnny working sixteen hours a day and his mom working two jobs, they still find it difficult to catch up and make ends-meet.

As Johnny daydreams of a life he believes he’ll never be able to have, shocking news grabs his attention: a real life princess has come to town and will be staying at the very hotel he is employed to. Johnny thinks Princess Victoriana can be his key to escaping his humdrum life and erasing his money problems for good. Soon enough though, Johnny finds himself thrown into an adventure he hadn’t quite bargained for. Princess Victoriana claims her brother had been turned into a frog by an evil witch and she needs Johnny to find him to save her from marrying the evil witch’s son and ruining her kingdom. Johnny agrees because, really, he has nothing promising going on in his life at the moment. So with the prospect of not only gaining a great fortune from the princess to help ease his financial load but also with the added bonus of marrying her, Johnny sets out to find her brother and free him from his curse.

I have recently become a fan of fairy tale story retellings. I enjoy the modern twist thrown into the fantastical elements behind what made the fairy tales so great in the first place. But Cloaked was an overload of clichés and riddled with depthless cast of characters. The plot reads flat even though it is filled with many supposed twists and the pacing is too slow, you will find yourself yawning more often than hurriedly devouring the pages to know more. The book is a shrug okay type of fairy tale retelling instead of comical romance.

One of the biggest problems was the way Johnny sounds both when he narrates and when he speaks. He sounded too much like a girl! He babbles on and on about shoes, about the princess, about his humdrum life. After the first three chapters, I did not want to hear anything more about how boring he thinks his life is and how much he believes the princess is the answer to adding spice to his world! Johnny was nice and caring, he had a good heart but that didn’t come through very well through the progression of the novel. I also couldn’t believe how completely clueless he was at the feelings Meg had for him. She pretty much threw her feelings in his face and yet, he couldn’t understand why she would make certain comments or get upset *rolls eyes* Princess Victoriana was utterly useless and absolutely annoying! I have loathed many female characters throughout my love of novels and Victoriana is no exception. She embodies the weak, frilly, dramatic female character. Meg, was probably the only redeemable character in the entire novel. She is funny and strong.....

    YA ALEX FLINN!

Alex Flinn almost never dissapoints all her books you never want to put down! This book was probaby my second favorite of her novels. (The first would be beastly) but yes i di recommend this book for people who like fairytale retellings. The only thing is that i dont find it realistic that 17 yr. Old would call through all that he did. So i tried to think as everyone as adults. But yes! Good book! Easy to read!
