More About This Book

Overview

In this dazzling novel from New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell, a beauty without means and a man without scruples strike a scandalous bargain that takes them into the heart of desire...

No gentleman would guarantee a lady's safety in exchange for her virtue. But that is precisely why Cloud Ryder would never call himself a gentleman. He wants Emily Brockinger the moment he sets eyes on her, and volunteers to guide her and her ward through lawless Colorado territory—if she'll share his bed. Yet to his surprise, the delicate Boston blueblood has a grit and fire that thrill him as no woman ever has...

Emily has no choice but to accept Cloud's terms, and no way to control her body's response to the virile, part-Cherokee drifter. The trail is strewn with obstacles, and the dangers only increase once they reach their destination. All his life, Cloud has shunned commitment, but now the only way to keep Emily safe is to open his heart—to the one woman with the passion and power to break it...

"The superbly talented Howell never disappoints." — Romantic Times

"The laughter mingles with the tears in any story from the talented pen of Hannah Howell. If you haven't read her before, start now!" — Affair de Coeur

    Hannah Howell scores a hit!

This starts out on a rather shaky premise. A young girl stranded after an Indian raid with a 3 year old whose parents have also been killed is told by her rescuer that he will save her and take her to civilization but only if she agrees to have sex with him--starting now. Whats a girl to do? Since her only other option is death she of course says yes. That not withstanding she finds passion immediately with Mr Horny. Frankly I would have expected a little resentment at least the first few times. ----- The writing in this book is so good I found myself liking it despite myself. The characters are great and the plot interesting. I'd read it again though the forced sex in the beginning is a bit murky its to good to pass up.

    One of my favorites!

This was an electrifying little read. Enjoyed both characters and loved the family the hero had. Wished his brothers had their own stories. They would make good heroes. Very sweet the in depth love she held for her rogue cowboy. Have reread several times - and I only have few on my reread list. This is a must buy!!!

Turned out to be a pretty good read

I did not care for the lusty beginning. I have no problem with steamy love scenes in general, but I have never been a fan of sex scenes based solely on lust.

Once the storyline got going, it ended up being a pretty good read.

Good Read - You will be midly surprised!

I enjoyed this book. It was not your typical romance novel in that it contained some unexpected twists.

    Torrid western adventure

Emily Brockinger, a fine Boston lady, gets marooned in the Colorado prairie after her caravan traveling from Boston to the San Luis Valley is attacked. Only surviving a toddler and herself. Braving out Emily continues the life-threatening journey with the child on her back. She encounters Cloud Ryder, who is returning from a war to settle on his land also located on the San Luis Valley. A handsome wanderer with a rogue's reputation, shun for his immoral behavior and Cherokee's heritage, Cloud is impressed by Emily's beauty, fortitude and determination. He desires her at first glance. Cloud proposes safeguarding Emily to their destination if she gives herself to him. Outraged at first, Emily accepts the proposal out of desperation. Never encountering someone like Emily, Cloud is amazed by her innocence and passion. Often feeling guilty for seducing her and ruining her virtue, but unable to stop their passionate encounters. Emily discovers her own sensual nature between Cloud's arms, and struggles with moral beliefs. Along the way, they encounter Cloud's friends and some of his former lovers. The more time Emily spends with Cloud and for the information she gathers from those who they run across, hints that Cloud tricked her into his bedroll. That he never would have left Emily and the kid behind. Cloud is some kind of hero according to what she learns. She gets furious, but instead of facing him and demanding the deal off, she continues to sleep with him, because by then, she's addicted to his lovemaking. Cloud's feelings for Emily mature beyond the irresistible desires she inspires him. Hannah Howell has a talent to convey characters' deepest emotions and during the narrative, it's a pleasure to see how they both change and what kind of life awaits them. The author did an excellent job with Cloud's characterization, creating him pleasantly mischievous without making him unlikable. I love the ending, it's not only a happy ending, it gave me the feeling this couple is made for one another. They don't confess their mutual love for each other until the last part of the book. When they finally said, "I love you." It's a memorable scene, the hardest for Cloud, who needs to go through almost losing Emily a few times, before acknowledging his love for her. The characters are brilliantly developed, even Cloud former lovers have some uniqueness. All secondary characters are noteworthy, specially the Ryder family clan and Giorsal, Emily's friend. It's a book to remember, both the plot and its unforgettable cast. Seeing Cloud going from cynical womanizer to devoted husband, who faints after Emily gives birth to twins, is a great reading experience. I recommend this book to anyone who loves romance and adventure.

This is a reprint of an entertaining western romance starring two wonderful adults and a confused child

In 1870 in the "Godforsaken" Colorado Territory, Emily Brockinger reflects back on leaving the upper crust Boston home of her sister in order to not to care for her three spoiled nieces and dodge her brother-in-law to live with her brother in Lockbridge. Now she, three year old Thornton Sears and a mule headed mule are the only survivors of an Indian massacre.

Leaving the military hitching post to avoid Sweet Abigail's clutches and the new officer in charge's stupidity, one fourth Indian Cloud Ryder watches the woman with the bonnet walking slowly across the harsh land out in the open. He assumes she is a fool and that the child was hers. Cloud joins them and learns she buried the twenty dead before heading west. He offers to escort them to Lockbridge in exchange for her sleeping with him. Shocked by his unkind audacity and abashed that she is attractive to this rogue, she accepts his terms as she fears he will leave her and Thornton, who calls her Mama, behind. As the trio treks to her destination, they begin to fall in love, as his skepticism of women clinging changes with her roll up your sleeves attitude.

This is a reprint of an entertaining western romance starring two wonderful adults and a confused child; although a late suspense in Lockbridge seems unnecessary as the plot is at its best when the trio is traveling the dangerous land. Hannah Howell especially captures the difficulty of trekking with a three years old child made worse as he just lost his family. Americana romance readers will enjoy the exciting Compromised Hearts.
