Meet the Author

Elechi Amadi was born in 1934 in Aluu near Port Harcourt in Eastern Nigeria. At University College, Ibadan he took a degree in physics and mathematics. After a period of land surveying and teaching he enlisted in the Nigerian Army. He left the army finally to work for the Rivers State Government, where he headed the Ministry of Education. He is the author of the renowned trilogy of novels The Concubine, The Great Ponds, The Slave. And his civil war diary, Sunset in Biafra, has been acclaimed. He has also published a verse play Isiburu and Ethics in Nigerian Culture.

    As beautiful a novel as can be.

    I studied this book for my English Literature class in Nairobi, Kenya. The flow of the story is quite stirring as it moves at a steady relaxed pace, devoid of any heightened overdramatics that sometimes afflict some pre-colonization African stories. The author manages to weave, within the story,various African traditions untouched by colonization that are rarely seen these days. One can learn a lot about society in those days,reading between the lines of this romantic story. At heart, it really is a story on love and to what lengths people, including hardened warriors, will travel to experience it. The ending is as good as any Hollywood ending..without the cheesiness. My favorite book and my favorite author.

    gods of injustice

    I first read the book while still in high school and the first impression i got about the book was that of a modern day classic. The book tells the story of ihuoma, a beautiful woman who all her lovers meet tragic death. This is explained by the fact that she was a wife of a god in the other world(?) and therefore no human being could marry her.Emenike her husband dies after a fight with madume(the villain in the book).Madume, another secret admirer of her commits suicide after his wife runs away from him due to his sudden blindness caused by a spitting snake.After Emenike's death,love blossoms between ihuoma and Ekueme.Though Anyika, the medicemen had warned Ekueme aganist any relationship with ihuoma, they go ahead(with the reluctant approval of Ekuemes parents after he goes bersek on the prospects a failed marriage with Ihuoma and the almost forced marriage to the childish Ahurole who was supposed to be his wife from the begining of Ekueme's moving and tragic life) with marriage preparations after Agwoturube, another medicineman claims he can protect Ekueme from the wrath of gods. As the marriage preparations goes on, Ekueme sends ihuoma's child to shoot lizards(to be used for gods appeasing ceremony in the frightening and deep seas) and as he leaves the room an arrow by the child misses a lizard and lands on him instead. He later died. Amand's potrayal of African's life before the arrival of the whiteman is excellent.I would highly recommend the novel to those interested with the rich African culture devoid of western capitalism. As the author says everything is predictable exept when the gods are wronged. One of the main theme in the book is the injustice meted upon innocent men by the gods for how did the gods expect such a beautiful woman as Ihuoma to fail to getlovers?.
