Cop: A Novel (that I can relate to)

As someone who wants to get into law enforcement I've read a lot of books about the subject, both fiction and nonfiction, but never before has the main character been one I could relate to as well as this one. This book offers a hipper perspective, representing a younger generation than many other authors. However, I would recommend this book to someone of any age, because it's witty, entertaining and yet very honest in its portrayal of a rookie cop.

If you like The Wire, Southland and buddy/cop movies, you will love this book.

Dougie Cohen is a different sort of Cop. Being a tattoed, sarcastic and punk rock loving skateboarder does not generally conjure up the image of a law enforcer but Dougie manages to get into the SFPD academy, and ends up learning a whole lot about policing that he didn't expect. In the process, he changes in ways he didn't expect and in ways that complicate his life. Some of his adventures made me laugh and some sent me for the tissue box. But in the end, I knew a lot about police work that I didn't know before and I understood what it's like to be a cop on the streets of one of the toughest cities to wear a uniform. San Francisco has a side that you don't read about in the tourist brochures. Dougie cuts his teeth in tranny bars and gang-ridden housing developments, and copes with the stress of his job and a serious threat to his life by cracking-wise with Blazing Saddles quotes. Anyone who grew up on sci-fi, Mel Brooks and comic books will relate to Dougie's dry humor and enjoy the boys-only banter that Dan Silver replicates with amusing believability. Dan writes like a cop though so, make no mistake, it will be obvious you're reading a book written by a seasoned officer, who went through many of the scenarios in the book himself, which makes the grittier parts of the story realistic and shocking. I think it's pretty cool.
