Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Now that Tigerclaw is leader of ShadowClan, Fireheart of ThunderClan is worried about the future of all the cats in the forest. The leader of Fireheart's clan, Bluestar, is convinced that there is a traitor in ThunderClan, and thus begins to make odd decisions, such as refusing to make any of the apprentices warriors. Worst of all, a pack of dogs is loose in the forest, killing cats as well as other animals. Bluestar is convinced that it is the work of rival clans, despite evidence to the contrary. During a heated meeting of all the clans, a fight nearly breaks out and to avoid violence Fireheart is forced to reveal to Mistyfoot and Stonefur of RiverClan that Bluestar is their mother, rather than Graypool of RiverClan. Later, he also has to tell Tigerclaw's children about how their father became a traitor to ThunderClan. Amidst all these revelations, the ThunderClan tries to figure out how to stop the pack of dogs. During an attack, Bluestar is fatally injured. She tells Fireclan that he is now the leader of ThunderClan. 2004, HarperCollins, Ages 10 up.

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter
Erin Hunter

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    1. Also Known As:
Erin Hunter is the pseudonym for three writers: Cherith Baldry, Kate Cary, and Victoria Holmes
    2. Hometown:
All three writers live in the U.K.

Warriors #5: A Dangerous Path Chapter One

Fireheart's fur bristled with disbelief and fury as he gazed up at the new leader of ShadowClan standing on the Great Rock. He watched as the cat swung his massive head from side to side. Muscles rippled under his gleaming pelt and his amber eyes seemed to glow with triumph.

"Tigerclaw!" Fireheart spat. His old enemy — the cat who had tried to kill him more than once — was now one of the most powerful cats in the forest.

The full moon rode high above Fourtrees, shedding its cold light over the cats of the four Clans, assembled there for the Gathering. They had all been shocked to learn of the death of Nightstar, the ShadowClan leader. But no cat in the forest had expected that ShadowClan's new leader would be Tigerclaw, the former ThunderClan deputy.

Beside Fireheart, Darkstripe was rigid with excitement, his eyes glittering. Fireheart wondered what thoughts were going through the mind of his black-pelted Clan mate. When Tigerclaw had been banished from ThunderClan, he had invited his old friend to go with him, but Darkstripe had refused. Was he regretting that decision now?

Fireheart caught sight of Sandstorm weaving her way toward him. "What's going on?" the pale ginger she-cat hissed as she came into earshot. "Tigerclaw can't lead ShadowClan. He's a traitor!"

For several heartbeats, Fireheart hesitated. Shortly after he had joined ThunderClan, Fireheart had discovered that Tigerclaw had murdered Redtail, the deputy. Once Tigerclaw became deputy himself, he had led rogue cats to attack the ThunderClan camp, trying to murder their leader, Bluestar, so that he couldtake her place. As punishment, he had been banished from their Clan and the forest. It was hardly a noble history for a leader of any Clan.

"But ShadowClan don't know about all that," Fireheart reminded Sandstorm now, keeping his voice low. "None of the other Clans know."

"Then you should tell them!"

Fireheart glanced up at Tallstar and Crookedstar, the leaders of WindClan and RiverClan, respectively, who stood beside Tigerstar on the Great Rock. Would they listen if he told them what he knew? ShadowClan had suffered so much from Brokentail's bloodthirsty leadership, followed by a devastating sickness, that they probably wouldn't care what their new leader had done, as long as he could forge them into a strong Clan again.

Besides, Fireheart couldn't help feeling a guilty relief that Tigerclaw had satisfied his hunger for power in a different Clan. Maybe now ThunderClan could stop waiting for him to attack, and Fireheart could walk the forest without constantly glancing over his shoulder.

Yet, as he struggled with his conflicting emotions, he knew that he would never forgive himself if he let Tigerclaw come to power without even making a protest.

"Fireheart!" He turned to see Cloudpaw, his long-furred white apprentice, padding quickly toward him with the wiry brown warrior Mousefur just behind. "Fireheart, are you just going to stand there and let that piece of fox dung take over?"

"Quiet, Cloudpaw," Fireheart ordered. "I know. I'll — "

He broke off as Tigerclaw paced to the front of the Great Rock.

"I am pleased to be here with you at the Gathering this night." The huge tabby spoke with quiet authority. "I stand here before you as the new leader of ShadowClan. Nightstar died of the sickness that took so many of my Clan, and StarClan have named me as his successor."

Tallstar, the black-and-white leader of WindClan, turned to him. "Welcome, Tigerstar," he meowed, nodding respectfully. "May StarClan walk with you."

Crookedstar meowed agreement as the new ShadowClan leader dipped his head in acknowledgment.

"I thank you for your greetings," Tigerstar replied. "It's an honor to stand here with you, although I wish the circumstances could have been different." "Wait a moment," Tallstar interrupted him. "There should be four of us here." He peered down at the crowd of cats below. "Where's the leader of ThunderClan?"

"Go on." Fireheart felt a cat nudge him, and glanced around to see that Whitestorm had joined the other ThunderClan warriors. "You're taking Bluestar's place, remember?"

Fireheart nodded to him, suddenly unable to speak. He bunched his muscles and got ready to spring. A heartbeat later he was scrambling to the top of the Great Rock to stand beside the three leaders. For a moment the unfamiliar viewpoint took his breath away. He seemed to be far above the hollow, watching the changing patterns of light and dark on the cats below as the moon shone through the branches of the four massive oak trees. Fireheart shivered as he caught the pale gleam reflected from countless pairs of eyes.

"Fireheart?" He looked up as Tallstar spoke. "Why are you here? Has something happened to Bluestar?"

Fireheart dipped his head respectfully. "Our leader breathed smoke in the fire, and she's not yet well enough to travel. But she'll recover," he added hastily. "It's nothing serious."

Tallstar nodded, and Crookedstar broke in testily, "Are we ever going to start? We're wasting moonlight."

Without waiting for a reply, the pale tabby RiverClan leader gave the yowl that signaled the beginning of the meeting. When the murmuring of the cats below had died away, he meowed, "Cats of all Clans, welcome to the Gathering. Tonight we are joined by a new leader, Tigerstar." He beckoned to the massive warrior with a flick of his tail. "Tigerstar, are you ready to speak now?"

Thanking him with a courteous nod, Tigerstar stepped forward to address the assembled cats. "I stand here before you by the will of StarClan. Nightstar was a noble warrior, but he was old, and he did not have the strength to fight the sickness when it came. His deputy, Cinderfur, died too."

Fireheart felt his fur prickling with unease as he listened. Clan leaders received nine lives when they went to share tongues with StarClan at Mothermouth, and Nightstar had become leader only a few seasons ago. What had happened to his nine lives? Had ShadowClan's sickness been so violent that it had taken all of them?

Looking down, Fireheart caught sight of Runningnose, the ShadowClan medicine cat, sitting with his head bowed. Fireheart could not see his face, but his hunched posture suggested that he was lost in misery. It must be hard for him, Fireheart thought, to know that all his skill had not been enough to save his leader.

    Warrior books

Warrior books are the best books if you are talking about family-friendly and always exciting books that you can never stop reading! It's money well spent. It is very educational, too. Half the words in the book I actually knew! Buy it, but I can't make any promises. In my opinion, I loved them. So I rate them 5/5.

    It was okay

The fifth book of the Warriors series, Warriors: A Dangerous Path by Erin Hunter is a departure from the rest. The series is based on four Clans of cats that live in a forest. They frequently struggle for things like land and power, so that the forest never seems to be restful for them. For example, ShadowClan used to have an evil, treacherous leader that pushed WindClan out of their land so that their cats could have more food. A more recent issue was when Tigerclaw tried to murder his way into leading his own Clan, which simply left him in exile. ShadowClan was reeling from the loss of two consecutive leaders, and Tigerclaw became Tigerstar when they accepted him as their leader. The main character in this story is a cat named Fireheart, of ThunderClan. He seems to be the epitome of honesty within a world of scheming lunatics. The warrior code, a sacred set of rules followed by all honorable warriors, was a good example of this. ¿The warrior code said that a Clan leader's orders should be obeyed without question. Until now, Fireheart had always accepted that. (pg. 128)¿ One day, he stopped by to talk to Bluestar (the mentally unstable Clan leader) and when he saw her, ¿His heart twisted with pity for her and fear for the rest of his Clan. (pg. 22)¿ Fireheart is a very passionate cat he cares about his Clan, their safety, and their leader. Fireheart believes that Tigerstar is planning some plot to destroy all of ThunderClan, Tigerstar's former Clan. He can't seem to find sufficient evidence to prove it to anyone except himself. It also feels as though there is an unspoken evil surrounding the forest. Later, it is found that this unimaginable threat is a pack of wild, bloodthirsty hunting dogs. Meanwhile, Bluestar thinks that StarClan (the warrior ancestors above that control almost all life) is holding a war with ThunderClan, along with her suspicions of WindClan hunting on ThunderClan territory. ¿'Yes ¿ I see it all!' she spat. 'WindClan have been hunting on our territory (pg. 91).'¿ Longtail comes back to the ThunderClan camp, looking extremely disheveled. He tells Fireheart that he has found the pack. They discover that ¿Tigerstar has laid a trail straight back to the camp (pg. 284)¿. The Clan must evacuate their own camp as a small group of warriors carry out a daring plan to divert the dogs and trick them so that they fall into a raging river. The plan does not go perfectly, and Bluestar ends up sacrificing herself for the well-being of her Clan. Fireheart then learns that Bluestar finally realized that her Clan was not a bunch of traitors, as she had thought before. This book was all right, but it was much too sad.

    An Excellent Series

Every one of these books in the series was wonderful. I thought, when I first purchased Into the Wild, that it would be a semi entertaining quick read. I never expected the series to be one that I would read over and over and over ... Well, I was mistaken. These books are incredibly creative and they pull you in. Be prepared to stay up all night reading! I showed them to my friends, one of them a kid who wasn't very interested in reading. Well, she's hooked now along with all the rest of my pals. You must read the Warriors!!!

    My Opinion

Warriors is just an amazing series if you like fantasy adventure. This is my 3rd favorite book in the whole series. The others in order are Long Shadows and Bluestars Prophecy. That book made me laugh, cry, and understand Bluestar more than ever. I really like it because that 1 kittypet that Tigerpaw nearly killed was Scorge, leader of BloodClan. The whole series is just amazing. Read it. But dont read Seekers, its not that good. But still, the 4 people workin on the book have great minds and i hope the series doesnt end with The Last Hope in the Omen of the Stars series. This book is my 3rd favorite because of the awesome battle with Scorge and BloodClan. Also Tigerstar's death is in it. Or its in A Dangerous Path, i dunno, but still, awesome book.

    AWSOME BOOK

This book was totally awsome, even though my favortie character Bluestar dies. Bluestar was a noble leader for a long time, though I was happy when she named Fireheart leader and told the truth about her kits. It was an instresting book.
