Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

The Last Dragon Chronicles continue to roll out in this new, full-length (464-page) episode. There are some surprising new developments in this fifth of seven planned installments. Loyal fans among readers nine thru 12.

Children's Literature
This is a very odd book. It's one of five in the "Last Dragon Chronicles It is very readable, in fact I would call it a page-turner, but.... The characters seem to have some depth, and the story itself is rather fun. Imagine a woman who makes clay dragons and somehow has the power to give them life. Each dragon has a personality, and a task—there is a Listener, a Healer, a Chronicler—and they know enough to say very still when somebody who doesn't know them is around. Now, after many years of exile, real dragons have returned to Earth. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Hard to say. We know that there will be a tremendous battle (between good and evil, among other things) but once the battle is fought, what happens then? Believe it or not, there is no happy ending. There is no ending at all, since everyone is destroyed, but we are given a little hope. "Thus it would be written in the Chronicles of Dragons: In the new beginning was the Word. And the Word of Gadzooks was...Sometimes." Passages like these will be incomprehensible to readers lacking in basic knowledge of the Bible. Not recommended. Reviewer: Judy Silverman
VOYA
Continuing the story last chronicled in The Fire Eternal (Orchard Books, 2007/VOYA April 2009), David Rain, his partner Zanna, their daughter Alexa, and friends Lucy and Liz Pennykettle, are now embroiled in an inter-dimensional war. David and Alexa are pawns of powerful beings who are working to bring dragons back to the planet while at the same time, trying to contain a piece of dark fire that has the power to destroy the earth. With the polar bears moved to safety and legendary dragons who have lived for centuries in stasis awakening, it is up to the friends to draw on all the magic they posses to oust the powers of darkness that threaten to overwhelm them. As in the previous novels, D'Lacey has built a complex world filled with magic and adventure. The fast- paced plot is intricate and highly dependent on the other volumes for continuity. With no new characters added, there is a significant lack of development, and many characters begin to show inconsistencies. For example, Lucy at times acts as petulant as a five-year-old, but at other times shows strength beyond her years. The writing style is also inconsistent, filled with unnecessary descriptions but also lacking important descriptions at climatic moments. This volume also lacks the important but transparent environmental themes of the other titles, making this addition to the series only for those who are already enamored by their experience with the other titles. Dark Fire

This book is very cool and it is the best book I have read by Chris D'Lacey. It has 500 pages of suspenseful twists and complicated story lines to keep readers engaged. That make this the longest and most complex book of the series. DARK FIRE takes up the story at the moment when David Rain(the main character) has come back to the Pennykettle home after five years in the Arctic, which they thought he was dead. When he returns, he meets his strange wife Zanna , a sibyl or wise woman who is still discovering her talents. Their young daughter Alexa, who holds gifts beyond anyone's imagining, she can communicate telepathically and foretell the future. David and Zanna struggle to reestablish a relationship and are complicated by the mysteries now surrounding David and the time he spent with angelic beings known as the Fain. David has also returned from the Arctic with a crazy guess that their five-year-old daughter Alexa holds the key to destroying the evil Ix, the enemy of the Fain and of dragons. Gwillana, a crazy and dangerous sibyl, has been causing trouble again, and this time she may be healed by darklings, twisted creatures of the dark forces that seek to rule the Universe.

    Woah.

I think this was my favorite book that I have ever read. I have been following the series for about four years and Chris d'Lacey has never failed to impress me and my friends. I just adore the series and can't wait for 'Fire Wold', book six.

One of the best in the series!

I bought this book last week and i was so caught up in it i finished the whole thing in 2 days. I rocommend this to anyone who reads fantasy books or any environmentalists out there. It also has "save the environment" sort of theme just like the movie avatar. But before you read this i recommend you read the first 4 books because if you don't it might get a little confusing. This book was a total page turner and i can't wait for the next book in the series which is named "Fire World" as i have heard. It also seems as if it will take place in the Fain world of Ki:mera. So please hear me out and read this exciting book!

    Dark Fire

Five stars for imagination! Chris d'Lacey creates a world within our own that is both desirable and exciting. He introduces new concepts almost too often but manages to keep emoitons on a human level. The first three books were great, the third was a little weird, and when I was reading the fourth it was almost too insanely imaginative. This book is way beyond the level of insanity reached in the fourth, and it was a little overwhelming, not to mention weird. But in the end everything falls into place perfectly with and ending that leaves the readers itching to read the next book. I was a little disappointed because there weren't any mischevious little off to the side dragon adventures, but the book was so strange and absorbing I hardly noticed. I LOVE it!
