    A Must Read for all Long Islanders

    I found this book to be quite interesting. It gave a full insight into the beginnings of the fishing boat industry on Long Island. It also gave insight into how and why Long Island's fishing boats regulations came into effect.

    Why and how of the Pelican disaster

    Dark Noon is a retelling of the Pelican disaster where a overcrowded party fishing boat capsized losing about 2/3s of its passengers. Clavin writes authoritatively, but I believe he had at least one fact wrong concerning Nazi saboteurs. His overall portrayal of events is probably accurate and fair to the understanding of the causes of the disaster. The story reads well though it is mostly of local Long Island history. I enjoyed it because I grew up on the Eastern End of Long Island and had heard references to the sorrowful day.

    Bitter Sweet Reading for the NYC/NJ Fisherman

    Having spent many years on the water, some as a charter captain. And recently as a tow boat operator who salvages and tries to save sinking boats and their boaters. Also having a few trips myself with my dad on Party Fishing boats out of Northern NJ it was a bitter sweet story. The nastagia of the old days fishing with working class fisherman. The beer and the banter. Then thinking these guys out having fun will blindly trust their captain for safe passage. And the banter between fishgerman on the boat who are your friends for 8 hours stints- then walk away at the dock. The bizarre things they did for entertainment and 'luck' to catch more fish. Their blind trust in their captain who tried to accomodate everyone at extreme expense to all. And the stories of people who found their trust misplaced when things turned unexpectedly bad. The survival stories of the fisherman out from NYC on the Fisherman's Special train to have a good time and end Summer. Only to find then struggling for survival when 2 or 3 passengers dies that day. A very good book for thos who have been out fishing. And something to remember. And the introduction of two names. Frank Mundus who in 1951 would be the most famous sharker that ever lived. And the USCG Cutter Tamaroa which did nothing useful in 1951- but if memory serves me was the same the Coast Guard Cutter doing the life saving in the book/movie- The Perfect Storm. It's a quuick and a good read!
