Overview

GIFTED AND CURSED

Kaitlyn Fairchild has always felt like an outsider in her small hometown. Her haunting eyes and prophetic drawings have earned her a reputation as a witch. But Kait's not a witch: She's a psychic. Tired of being shunned, Kait accepts an invitation to attend the Zetes Institute, where she can have a fresh start and study with other psychic teens.

Learning to hone her abilities with four other gifted students, Kait discovers the intensity of her power — and the joy of having true friends. But those friendships quickly become complicated when Kait finds herself torn between two irresistible guys. Rob is kind and athletic, and heals people with his good energy. Gabriel is aggressive and mysterious, a telepath concealing his true nature as a psychic vampire, feeding off of others' life energy. Together, Rob and Gabriel's opposing forces threaten the group's stability.

Then one of the experiments traps the five teens in a psychic link. A link that threatens their sanity and their lives. And Kaitlyn must decide whom to trust...and whom to love.

    Amazing.

I first read these books like 8 years ago. I've reread them many times over since. Far better than her Vampire Diaries series and even better than Night World. You will love all the characters -- Dark and brooding Gabriel, sweet and noble Rob, and indecisive and strong Kaitlyn. You'll probably laugh, cry, and not be able to put down the books until you finished. This isn't a vampire story - it's about psychic teenagers brought together at a group home for studies. There is a form of "psychic vampire" but you still get your heart melting bad boy. Just brilliant and completely original for her times. Pre-order it so you save the buck, it is so worth it.

    A MUST READ!!!!

Okay I am only in sixth grade and i absoulutely loveeee this book! I borrowed it from a friend who also read this book and we both loved it! It's definately a must read. First of all, the whole story line is way awesome. I don't really like reading these kind of books, but trust me, its worth reading. The characters are very well described and everyone has their own personality and power. The love triangle between Kaitlyn, Rob, and Gabriel is a lot like Twilight's (not trying to compare the two books because they are VERY different, just the love triangle). This book is full of adventure, romance, fantasy, and anything you imagine. It's the BEST book ever! I got so annoyed at Kaitlyn because she couldn't decide who she loved because supposedly she loved them both (just like twilight). Which explains why L.J. Smith is a very good writer and really describes everything really well. Although Gabriel is my fave in the book, I think Rob is best for Kait because I can tell he really loves her, and theres more detail between them. Just read the book, and you'll understand :)

    Fabulous, psychic fun!

Anonymous wrote a great review on this series. One of L.J. Smith's finest trilogies. The story to me, is a combination of John Farris's "The Fury" (sadly, out of print I think) & the new "House of Night Series" by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. The story is about five psychic teenagers (different powers of course) who are recruited to a privileged school for study, with the promise of a full scholarship to any college they desire. But the individuals who run the school have far more darker designs to make the kids into psychic-soldiers to do their bidding.

Great story & great characters! Give it a chance when it gets re-issued. =D

    Amazing

I wish this book never had an ending so i could continue to read. It has to be one of my favorite books. It has the supernatural twist with a bit of romance, and a ton of suspence. Exactly what i love in a book.

I was really torn in this book between loving it and hating it. I really couldn't figure out what I thought, overall, of the book. Did it keep my interest? Yes. And it was certainly long enough for my liking. I tried to read L.J. Smith's other books, the Night World series, but I really didn't like that they were short stories. And this one sounded great so I gave it a try. Overall, I really didn't like the main character, Kaitlyn, but I loved Gabriel. I loved that Smith switched to his point of view every once and a while. I would've loved if he was the narrator of the whole book. Reason being, Kait was insensitive and obnoxious, which was even more apparent when we entered Gabe's life. I wanted to hit her on the head, she was so dense and mean to him. I also need to say how Extremely similar this book is to the Summoning (and the Awakening, its sequel). They both started off with a girl narrator who enters a home made specifically for kids that are "special". The women who run the home come off as nice, but strict, making them eat healthy foods. The kids are all kind in the home but one dangerous boy, who catches her eye, but he in return, doesn't want her company. She's intrigued by the boy, and she feels a senstitive side of him and help shim throughout the book. The home they are staying in turns out to be corrupt and the kids lash out against it. The girl gets tired of the dark, mean boy so she goes for the other way cuter boy, who takes her up quickly. The kids run away, live on the streets, get caught, and eventually defeat the system for good. The girl falls for the dark, mean boy who suddenly turns very nice when she finds out he loves her.

Anyway, (so sorry for the long comparison) I'm sure I gave too much away right there. So I didn't ever have a great feeling about Rob but I liked Anna and Lewis. The other thing is, throughout the book, I would go from loving Gabe to hating him, to loving him, and feeling sorry for him, to hating him again. It seemed like when i liked him, she didnt like him, and when i didnt like him, she liked him. Totally messed up. And same with Rob, I hated him, then warmed up to him. I also had a constant dislike for Kaitlyn, I though her power sucked. I mean, drawing, then having to decipher it? Yeah, real fun. Why not just drain 'em like Gabe, or heal them like Rob? Another point that made Kait look so dense is her situation with Gabe. I mean, isn't it obvious that he had feelings(I'm trying not to give it away...) but it really killed me to see him open up, and she had nothing in return. And lastly, I didn't like the ending. Extremely predicable. From the first ten seconds when Kait meets the kids, you know who's going to end up with who. And Smith hinted it! She literally said, Kait wondered if [blank and blank] would ever be together. And look, it did! Wow, shocker. So extremely predictable book all the way through. I felt very sorry for Gabe during the book, and I hated Kait. Then almost near the end, I disliked Gabe, loved Kait. Then Kait gives in, and I just didn't like them all. Lol. So, I think I'm going to give up on Smith's writing. Sorry for the long review, I'm sure no one will read it. So, yeah, rating: 3 1/2 stars, it wasn't good enought for 4, but not bad enough for 3.

    Dark Visions

This book is thrilling and you don't want to put this book down. The characters are really well descriptive and its really romantic (for all those romantics out there). Its a book you would want to read over and over and over again. Its a book to recommending to your friends. This book takes you on an adventure and it shows the relationships between the characters, both romantic and not so romantic ones, and you will remember what happens in the book.

    Unbelievable

This was an amazing story. It has a great plot and really hooked me in. I loved the characters expecially Gabriel. I recommend this to anyone who loves supernatural books. It doesn't have vampires, if you're tired of that like me, and it has adventure, romance, suspence, and mystery. It had so many twists I was so amazing.

    Share with Friends

I've shared this books with friends first. They said it wasn't as good as Night World but it was a good read. I'm just starting about 5 chapters into it. I'm read the Sweep Series too. I also recommend the House of Night Series and of Course The Twilight Series too.

Edgy with a Side of Love

i am reading this book, well, not THIS book, but the individual books right now, and they are pretty good. in my opinion, they're not as good as the vampire diaries series and the night world series, but still a good read. it seems to me, in every book besides nightworld, the main character(a girl) falls in love with two guys, and has trouble choosing. sometimes, it's the obvious choice, but in this book, it took to the very last 50 or so pages to find out who she's going to be with. good book, and can't wait to read more from L.J.Smith
