Overview

The author of the bestselling NUMA and Dirk Pitt series returns with an all-new novel of adventure and intrigue featuring his unbeatable hero of the high seas-Juan Cabrillo.

Cabrillo and his motley crew aboard the clandestine spy ship Oregon have made a very comfortable and very dangerous living working for high-powered Western interests. But their newest clients have come from the Far East to ask for Cabrillo's special brand of assistance: a consortium of Japanese shipping magnates whose fortunes are being threatened by brutal pirates trolling the waters of Southeast Asia.

Normally, such attacks on the high seas are limited to smaller ships and foreign-owned yachts-easy targets on the open ocean. Now, however, giant commercial freighters are disappearing. But when Cabrillo confronts the enemy, he learns that the pirates' predations hide a deadly international conspiracy-a scheme of death and slavery that Juan Cabrillo is going to blow out of the water.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Juan Cabrillo and his vagabond crew return to battle a flotilla of high-tech, high-seas pirates infesting the waters of Southeast Asia. Obviously, these ruthless bluebeards are moving up the food chain; instead of preying on small ships and luxury yachts, they are seizing gigantic commercial freighters. Nonstop action; sea adventure at its best.
Library Journal
Writing the best-selling books Table for One and Spaghetti and Meatball has made Julia James famous as the Queen of Single People. With her professional and personal identities wrapped up in being single, she's mortified when the press links her amorously with a one-time acquaintance, struggling actor Lance Collins. When Lance accompanies Julia (with the encouragement of his unscrupulous agent) home to Oklahoma, it not only fans the flames but also brings the pair closer together. Although Julia eventually falls in love with Lance, she finds it hard to leave the security of singledom.

Meet the Author

Clive Cussler
Clive Cussler
Clive Cussler is the author of numerous New York Times bestsellers.

Jack DuBrul is the author of the bestselling Philip Mercer series: Vulcan's Forge, Charon's Landing, The Medusa Stone, Pandora's Curse, River of Run and Deep Fire Rising.

Biography

Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997. It was the first time since the College was founded in 1874 that such a degree was bestowed.

Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks and the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization (named after the fictional Federal agency in his novels) that dedicates itself to preserving American maritime and naval history. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered more than 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites including the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, the Confederacy's Hunley, and its victim, the Union's Housatonic; the U-20, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania; the Cumberland, which was sunk by the famous ironclad, Merrimack; the renowned Confederate raider Florida; the Navy airship, Akron, the Republic of Texas Navy warship, Zavala, found under a parking lot in Galveston, and the Carpathia, which sank almost six years to-the-day after plucking Titanic's survivors from the sea.

In September, 1998, NUMA - which turns over all artifacts to state and Federal authorities, or donates them to museums and universities - launched its own web site for those wishing more information about maritime history or wishing to make donations to the organization. (www.numa.net).

In addition to being the Chairman of NUMA, Cussler is also a fellow in both the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London. He has been honored with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.

Cussler's books have been published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries. The author lives in Arizona.

Intense story, hard to put down.

This has to rank as one of the better, if not the best Clive Cussler has written about the adventures of the Oregon and her crew. I found it difficult to put the book down, always spending another hour or two reading follow on chapters. Wish there was more from him on the crew of the Oregon. Would certainly make a good subject for a movie, but given how Hollywood screwed up a couple of his previous books, he probably would not even want to suggest same. But, and excellent piece of work, no doubt about it.

    Haven't read it yet...

but I just can't imagine why they'd charge double for the e-book vs the paperback. I really like the ability to have the "book" on my phone, that's very convenient however, it's not worth the cost...

Dark Watch Takes The Oregon Files to New Level

USA Today Best-selling author Jack Du Brul takes the reigns of Clive Cussler¿s successful Oregon Files series and debuts with a knock-out punch in the just released, Dark Watch. Du Brul sets the tone right off the bat with a plausible plot, a breath of fresh air in a time when outlandish scenarios fill the pages of similar adventure novels. This action-packed high seas adventure places the main character, Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon in a race for time as pirates and smugglers work the coasts of China and Japan. It¿s a plot worthy of the finest Dirk Pitt adventure and places the Oregon Files where it belongs, in the high echelon of the best action-adventure novels. Readers will put this book down and immediately want more from this author. The good news is he already has a successful series of adventures published (Vulcan¿s Forge, Charon¿s Landing, The Medusa Stone, River of Ruin, and Deep Fire Rising) and another on the way in 2006. I highly recommend this adventure and all the other published work by this excellent author!

Clive and Jack at their best!

Acceptably far-fetched, high octane, just believable, great detail and a really good read.

    A Most Excellent Adventure!!

My husband and I, having finished reading all of the Dirk Pitt books, are now delving into the Oregon Files Series. The first two were enjoyable enough but this book has moved Juan Cabrillo and his crew to the top of the list of our favorites thanks, I am sure, to the pairing of Cussler with Jack Du Brul. Keep these coming, guys!

    Another great story

I have no idea where CC comes up with these unusual plots, but this one is pretty good. A couple of the situations might be a bit of a stretch on one's imagination, since Clive likes to use real world equipment and technical facts in development of the story, but it still was a quick read that was only put down for needed sleep.
A very unusual plot, well written, and will satisfy most of the Cussler fans like myself. He remains one of my favorite authors.

    Fantastic!!

I am a long time Cussler fan. I was very disappointed in the book 'Black Wind' in which Clive Cussler teamed with his son Dirk. Big Mistake! Dirk does not have Clive's talent. But Clive's collaboration with Jack DuBrul hit the mark. Dark Watch is a compelling read. Bravo. Buy it!

you can definitely tell Cussler teamed up with someone besides Dirgo

I fell in love with the Golden Budha and the Sacred Stone. Not a lot of gratuitous violence and cursing. In fact, the the Golden Budha, in the first part, Juan states, No blood on our hands. Everyone is genuinely concerned for the safety of each other. You don't see a lot of private lives (which is OK). I waited anxiously for the next installment in a series that I thought was great. Dark Watch is just that ... Dark. you can definitely tell it is not the same authors. I don't know Jack Debrul's work and I'm sure it is fine, but the Oregon series took a 90 degree turn and I'm not sure it was in the right direction for me. I hope Mr. Cussler goes back to Dirgo. I loved the style, pace, descriptions, everything about the books. I just had a hard time with Dark Watch.

    Sikhs are not Muslims

This is one really good book except for some misconceptions. Sikhs are not Muslim, nor do they pray to Allah. I wish Mr. Bruel had done his background check before these glaring mistakes. I am sure there will a lot of unhappy Sikhs (at least those who read his books)

fun modern day high seas adventure

Sea Captain Juan Cabrillo and his dangerous crew of the Oregon normally work special mission impossible oceanic tasks for the west with his team¿s latest assignment to sabotage the Star. As usual success means greater wealth like $10 million courtesy of his Uncle Sam¿s ¿black¿ budget and more difficult requests. --- Juan is a bit surprised when Hiroshi Katsui, representing a consortium of Japanese shipping entrepreneurs, hires their services to stop the increasingly bold and deadly activities of pirates working Asiatic waters from the Sea of Japan to the South China Sea. Juan plans a strategy to deal with a conglomeration of pirates that he assumes has merged under the control of one bold leader. However, as the Oregon crew learns more, Juan realizes that this case of brazen piracy is much more than just this obvious piratical front. He and the Oregonians may be in too deep to pull off this caper as the opponents have heavy sponsors from around the globe using pirates to increase and hide the lucrative international slave trade. --- DARK WATCH, the latest Juan Cabrillo modern day high seas adventure, like its predecessors (see GOLDEN BUDDHA and SACRED STONE), is action-packed and never slows down until the final payout. The story line feels more like a comic book than a novel in nature, but is fun to follow as Juan and crew go from the frying pan to the fire to even hotter scenarios. Though not quite the Pitts, fans of the Oregon Files will enjoy this latest lighthearted caper against North Koreans (who else on the seas?) and an international consortium of ¿moguls¿ who use murder as a business tool to enhance their thriving slave operations. --- Harriet Klausner
