    Great Insight!

I was really looking forward to reading this book and getting Menolly insight on the sisters' ongoing events. I was not disappointed!!! The harsh exterior of Menolly was broken down to show an insecure being just wanting to forget her past and make peace with her future. Due to a very talented Monk and the help of friends, Menolly was able to obtain revenge for her wrongful murder and save the day. If you've enjoyed reading the other in this series then you're probably going to like this one as well. If you need a paranormal fix, check out some of my suggestions for vampire readers.

    A Truly Charming Series!

    Darkling / 978-1-429-57754-0

The third in the "Sisters of the Moon" series, "Darkling" carries on the point-of-view cycle by moving to the third sister in the family - the ill-fated Menolly. Half-human and half-Fae like her sisters, her particular cross to bear is her hated vampirism. In the second book of the series, "Changeling", we learned that the sisters' old enemies were joining forces with the vampire group that tortured and turned Menolly, and "Darkling" follows that plot thread as a chance for Menolly to face her past demons and vanquish her old sire.

If I may get minor criticism out of the way first: "Darkling" carries on the proud Fantasy Kitchen Sink themes of this series, but via taking a minor left turn on "Fourth and Bananas", as it were - Loki the Trickster makes a special cameo appearance here, as does Morgaine and her Arturian crew in their quest for the Merlin - a plot point that will presumably become relevant later but does little to clear the air here and now. There's also the sudden and jarring introduction of a vampiric taboo against severing the magical lifeline between vampiric sire and child, as well as a similar taboo against murdering one's own sire - a strange plot point, given that (a) one would suspect that at least some vampiric children are sired unwillingly, and (b) if the D'Artigo sisters have cared about social niceties prior to now, that hasn't come through the narrative. Overall, it feels like a cheap shot to easily inject some quick angst (OMG! Now even the vampires will shun Menolly!) into an otherwise excellent setup of redemption and revenge.

These small criticisms aside, the novel readily redeems itself by maintaining this series' high aversion to angst levels - a particularly tricky thing to pull off in a novel that is largely about Menolly's torturous history and her working through the issues arising from the same. It's gratifying to see a rape victim portrayed with so much depth and sensitivity - Menolly has recovered from her torture through her strength and determination, but in order to truly be free from the magical ties that bind her to her sire, she must go through a sort of magical counseling session to work through her inner demons. Along the way, her sister Camille is able to see and relive Menolly's memories, and Menolly realizes that protecting her sisters from the knowledge of what happened to her will only drive a wedge between them in the long run, and she comes to trust that her sisters can handle the truth - a surprisingly deep philosophical conclusion from a "fluffy" fantasy series.

Although I enjoyed "Darkling" immensely and recommend it to fans of the series, it is important to note that this is a much darker novel than the first two entrants, as the plot focuses solidly on Menolly's torturous history, so be forewarned.

    Daringly good read

D'artigo sisters strike again! Menolly's transformation throughout this book gives a lot of weight to her character, as we learn who she is and why. I rather enjoyed the romances that she involves herself in as being non-traditional and strong. She grows as a character that people can relate to....maybe not in the same sense, but still similar. I think this is a great read for adult who still want some fantasy in their library, but who are past the Harry Potter stage, or even still in that stage but with a need for variety.

    Excellent series

This an excellent 2nd book of a series. The author picks the story up from where it left off but this 2nd book is told through the eyes of her 2nd character. A must read.

    I'm Hooked...............

This is the third book in the series and so far I love it and I cannot forsee the series taking a direction I don't like. Each story/book is told from the point of view of the sister the book revolves around. Since there are three sisters we, as the readers, have a story told by each sister. This is a fantastic series with and interesting take on the supernatural/faerie. I very much enjoy this series and look forward to more.

    It's Menolly's turn!

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, Darkling proved me wrong. This entire series has become one of my favorite. This book was interesting from start to finish. No page fillers or down spots. No repeating the same information or overly emotional. Just enough sex and action to keep me from putting it down. Can't wait to see what happens next between Menolly and Narissa. I highly recommend this book and the rest of the series.

    Loved It

This book was amazing. Though slightly darker than the others, but that's what really makes this book stand out. As Mellony copes with the tragic and horrifying scars placed on both her body and soul. She feels an overwhelming desire to kill her sire, Dredge. And as the mysterious disappearences of people occurs more frequently its safe to assume she might just get her wish. But there are always difficult obstacles and decisions on a path of vengance. But is it all worth it to get to her destination? Will it be worth compromising the safety of her comrades? Will it be worth descracing her honor as a vampire, by breaking a permanent bond? Will it be worth the pain she must endure to acquire the power needed to defeat Dredge? As she moves forward on her path, where will destiny place her? And will she ever completley except herself and the beauty beneath her scars, or let enyone else except her? So many questions that will only be answered once you read Darkling.

    One Girls Opinion

I just finished Darkling a few days ago. I got off too a slow start ' my fault, not the book's'but by 2 chapters in I couldn't put it down. Getting the story behind Menolly's rebirth as a vamp helped me to better understand some of the family dynamics in books 1&2. Well worth reading, and I can't wait for the next one.

    Hugely disappointing

Her first two books I read in a couple of days, but this one has taken me much longer. After about 15 minutes my mind would start to wander and I would have to go back and re-read pages. I kept picking it back up hoping that it would get better, but it never did. The story line seemed kind of weak and it was hard to relate to Menolly. I don't think I will read any more of her books.

    a terrific paranormal thriller

Like her sisters, Camille the witch (see WITCHLING) and Delilah the death maiden (see CHANGELING) half-fae, half-human Menolly D¿Artigo works for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency (OIA). However, unlike her siblings Menolly has struggled with what she has become, a DARKLING vampire changed by the malevolent Dredge as part of his torture of her when he held her prisoner.-------------- For the most part she controls her cravings, but remains obsessed with killing her vampiric sire if he ever leaves Otherworld and comes to Earth. However as humans are being changed to vampires she may have her chance finally since Dredge has joined with the demon Shadow Wing to break the barrier between the realms. If they succeed, Menoly might get what she wished for a chance to kill Dredge, but knows the fight if the foes breach the wall will require all from her and her sisters as the dark enemy has many dangerous allies while her side is bone tired from the war that still is ablaze. Their only newcomer is Roz the incubus mercenary hired to help them but everyone knows when the going gets tough mercenaries get going from the fight. What the siblings do not know is Roz has a grudge with Dredge who killed his family when he was a child.----------- The tale told from Menolly¿s viewpoint is a much darker erotic romantic fantasy than those of her sisters as she has the most problem adapting to what she has become. Camille and Delilah are back, but it is Menolly¿s tale as she learns that sometimes you get what you wished for. Yasmine Galenorn provides a terrific thriller starring a fascinating protagonist with an obsession that could cost her life if she goes into the fight against an invincible opponent with her narrow objective even if Roz shares her need for vengeance.------------- Harriet Klausner
