Overview

Tamani looked at her gravely, and reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear.

He hesitated for an instant, then his hands found the sides of her face, pulling her to him. He didn't kiss her, just held her face close to his, their foreheads resting together, their noses almost touching.

She hated how much it felt like good-bye.

Laurel now knows the truth: Yuki is a rare Winter faerie, the most powerful—and deadly—of all, and Klea plans to use her to help conquer and destroy Avalon. But Klea's reach extends far beyond one wild Winter faerie. With Tamani, David, and Chelsea by her side, Laurel prepares to face what may be Avalon's final days, in the stunning conclusion to the Wings series.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
In the final battle for Avalon, friendship and loyalty are tested nearly beyond their limits. After Yuki's identity as winter faerie is revealed, and Klea's plan to destroy the faerie homeland is uncovered, Laurel and Tamani have precious little time to warn the fae of the impending war. Humans David and Chelsea refuse to be left behind, instead risking their lives for Laurel and the people of Avalon. Unfortunately, Klea is a deadly opponent; controlling trolls and Yuki's immense power, she wreaks death and vengeance upon her former homeland without remorse. It is not clear until the final pages who will reign as victor, but David, Chelsea, Tamani, and Laurel will each be called upon to fight bravely, even to the death. In this last installment of the Wings series, destinies and betrayals are unearthed at breathtaking speed. The series is action-packed, and the final chapters of the story are no exception. A thrilling page-turner, many readers will read the book cover-to-cover, barely daring to breath. The novel explores the borders between friendship and romantic love, and self-sacrifice and self-preservation, and it does not shy away from the complicated nature of such relationships and choices. While a certain amount of uncertainty exists in the end, the book provides a satisfying conclusion to Laurel's identity narrative: the discovery of her fae heritage and destiny, and the nature of both blood and bond familial ties. The book ends on a hopeful note and perhaps even the possibility of a continued series. Reviewer: Courtney Huse Wika
Kirkus Reviews
The bloom is off the rose in the conclusion of a paranormal romance featuring faeries who are, biologically, plants. At first (Wings, 2009; Spells, 2010), blond, zitless Laurel seemed idealized but unique: Laurel oozes sap (not blood) when injured, and the prose likewise was pleasant and refreshingly non-angsty for the genre. By this fourth volume, however, any freshness has faded. Four friends--faeries Laurel and Tamani, humans David and Chelsea--fight to defend idyllic Avalon against renegade faeries and ugly trolls. David wields Excalibur, echoing King Arthur, though the Arthurian theme never jells. Cliché ("A true hero knows love is more powerful than hate") and purple prose ("A single tear, glistening in the moonlight, slid down her porcelain cheek") sprout up, overwhelming vivid images and one particularly clever textual misdirection. Despite claiming a "deadly fast-forward" pace, fight scenes drag. Laurel hopes her love triangle will become a neat square (with David finally noticing Chelsea), but just before--before--a strong closing chapter, Pike interrupts with an Author's Note, counseling, "if you prefer your endings happy… maybe you should stop reading here." This bizarre Note disrupts the fiction and sabotages the last chapter's emotional power--and its content. With mediocre exposition and with battles superseding the previous volumes' fluttery abstinence-romance scenes, this won't attract new fans, but it will gratify loyal followers by providing closure. (Paranormal romance. 13 & up)

    Perfection

I bought this book yesterday, also the release date, because I have been so in love with the series from the start! It is such a interesting theory of faeries and being a very curious and avid reader of science fiction, it fit perfectly in my genre. This is the fourth and sadly the last enstallment of the Wings series. It was so amazing and I just could not put it down, and when I say that I mean I literally could not. It picks off right where the third book ended, the climax of the novel literally begins around the third chapter and lasts throughout the entire book. We all know most books have a set path that they usually follow, but this is unlike anything I have ever read!! There is very little down time for your mind and imagination to wonder. I honestly felt my heart racing the entire time that I was reading it, and not to mention I was so curious as to what was about to happen on the next page that I tended to excitedly rush through some pages. I want reveal any details because there is just so much to happen that there would be no way except for you to just sit here and read the book through me! So to clarify all of the statements that I have made....if you have been reading this series as faithfully as I have you do not even need to read this review, but if you havent started it yet I would highly recommend spending 10 dollars on it. Words cannot express the genius behind Aprilynn Pike and her rendition of fairytales.

    Amazing!

I loved this book, it must have been the best in the seiries! It was great. The final battle for Avalon has come, and everyone, including David and Chelsa have to fight. The main thing to keep in mind though, is that the epilogue is after the authors note! SPOILER ALERT!!! In the end Laurel chooses Tamini, but tells David to look around and notice things, since Chelsa still has a major crush on him. Laurel decides to stay at Avalon, and Chelsa ends up with some random guy and has a baby and David is about to propose to a random girl. Right at the end, David decides to let Laurel give him a potion to make him forget everything. He wont remember any of Laurel, Tam, or even Avalon.

    Great book!

Destined was an amazing book! I waited sooo long for it to come out and when it did it was totally worth the wait.

Yuki is a Winter faerie and Laurel and her friends have captured her. The only thing protecting them from a certain death is a thin line of salt, which is VERY breakable.

Suddenly Klea turns up and fighting breaks out. After a quick victory, Klea is gone, towing Yuki along. But this is only the eye of the storm.

Soon the only place of safety for the fae is Avalon, the circumstances so dire that risks must be taken and history repeated. Aprilynne Pike takes her story to a whole new level as she unfolds the finale to the Wings series in an enthralling tale about fighting, love, passion and power.

    more from this reviewer

This book is the final one in the Wings series and it was absolu

This book is the final one in the Wings series and it was absolutely fantastic!! Almost right from the start we are thrown into the action. Emotions are running high, trolls are running wild, and Avalon is at stake. Laurel is still struggling to make the choice between David and Tamani, but with all of the fairy realm at risk there is not much time to think about that. This book had me on the edge of my seat!! I was completely sucked back into the story and did not want to come out! The characters are still just as great and the story had me pumped up on an adrenaline rush.

The whole situation with Yuki gets very tense and complicated. It's a bit sad at times because you do get to see Yuki's vulnerability. You can't help but feel a bit sorry for her. Chelsea and David are big parts in this book too. I know that they have always played a role in the series, but they really step up in this one. In fact this book is totally David's. Yes Laurel is trying to do what she can to save Avalon and so is Tamani, but David is front and center in this one!! I love David, so it's nice to see him the way he is in this book. I know that is really vague, but I am trying to keep this spoiler free.

Even though this final installment is packed full of action, don't think there isn't still some romance and heart wrenching moments. For me this book was going to break my heart either way. I love both David and Tamani so whoever Laurel would choose to be with would leave me wounded. This is a love triangle done right! I don't typically like love triangles, but some are just done so well that you totally understand them. This is one of those. And as if the heartbreak wasn't enough, Aprilynne Pike also has put a letter at the end of the book that had me aching as my heart constricted in my chest.

I can't really say much about this book with it being the 4th one and all, so I will just tell you how amazing it was. This book was a fantastic conclusion to a fantastic series! It will keep you turning pages until you are finished. The action is incredible, the characters are just as awesome as they have been previously, and of course you need to know the outcome of everything. Will they be able to save Avalon? Who will Laurel choose to be with? Will everyone survive this? This series was so great, and as sad as I am that it is over, I can't say enough how well it was all wrapped up. To me it couldn't have been any better, especially with the letter at the end.

    Good Finale

After reading the professional reveiws I was convinced this last book in the Wings series was going to be bad. I thought the start of the book was a little boring but after the first chapter or two the book got really interesting. Pike did a great job ending the story. I thought Laurel, Tam, David and Chelsea all got a happy ending, just not the way you'd expect it for a couple of them!

    Loved the story!

After reading one of the professional reviews, I actually had buyers remorse about pre-ordering, thinking I wouldn't like the story. Turns out, I loved it! I recommend it for anyone who is continuing the series. This really is a part II to the third book. I don't recommend this book without reading the third book. The only complaint for me was the massive amount of action in the book. Made me stress out! :-D
