Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"An accessible picture book about the life of Diego Rivera sounds like an oxymoron, but Winter and Winter succeed beyond belief. His early life is the focus; the text in Spanish and English captions the paintings. It does a journeyman's job of conveying facts in well-condensed sentences; the Spanish translation is clear and easy to follow. The paintings are done in Rivera's own colossal style, even though they actually measure only a few inches square. Winter displays her clear knowledge of and love for her subject."--starred School Library Journal.

"Una excelente primera biograf&#237a." -- Kirkus Reviews Ganadora del Premio New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book y del Reading Rainbow™ Book
Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
A charming, simply told account, in Spanish and English, of the life of Diego Rivera, the Mexican muralist whose art is said to cover more than two and a half miles of walls throughout Mexico and North America.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-- An accessible picture book about the life and work of Diego Rivera sounds like an oxymoron, but Winter and Winter succeed beyond belief. His early life is the focus; the text in Spanish and English captions the paintings. It does a journeyman's job of conveying facts in well-condensed sentences; the Spanish translation is clear and easy to follow even for those readers without fluency in the language. Each picture is bordered with Mexican folk-art designs done in vivid, resonant, tropical tones. The paintings themselves are done in Rivera's own colossal style, even though they actually measure only a few inches square. Winter displays her clear knowledge of and love for her subject. Frida Kahlo appears in one scene without any identification other than her distinctive eyebrows; this subtle allusion is the only mention of Rivera's tempestuous personal life. The last pictures show him as a young man, perched on his scaffolding, brushes in hand, beckoning viewers on with his ardent glance. Readers will wish they could follow. --Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, Allen, TX

    What a beautiful book !

I named my son after the great Maestro. On his last day at our Back Up Center I gave a copy to his caregivers. They tell me the children love the story, the vibrant colors in each page. And as a parent,I love what it teaches. This is a must have for children starting their libraries.

    LOVE IT!

Bought this book years ago for the child I knew I'd have someday. Now that she's here, I can't wait to share it with her when she's the right age.

Great art, interesting story and spanish lesson in 1 book

I purchased this book to help my 8 year with his Spanish. His 11 year old brother enjoyed the story and the artwork. My 8 year liked having the 2 languages side by side and the artwork grabbed his attention. After I thought my boys went to bed I found the book open, next to a sketch pad. My older son tried to recreate one of Winter's drawings. A compliment to her style.
