Overview

In Saudi Arabia, two American missionaries are targeted by the infamous religious police—Muttawa. The man is tortured and killed; his wife arrested on trumped-up charges before being deported to the United States. Compelled by the injustice of her plight, young attorney Brad Carlson files an unprecedented civil rights suit against Saudi Arabia and the ruthless head of the Muttawa. But the suit unleashes powerful forces that will stop at nothing to vindicate the Arabian kingdom. Witnesses are intimidated and some disappear;
jurors are bribed; and a member of Brad’s own team may be attempting to sabotage the case. As Brad navigates a maze of treachery and deception,
he must gamble his case, his career, and the lives of those he loves on his ability to bring justice to one family, challenge the religious intolerance of a nation, and alter the course of international law. Directed Verdict is a Christy Award–winning novel.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
There is plenty of room in evangelical Christian fiction for fresh voices, and debut novelist Singer is a promising one. The story opens with some fairly graphic violence as Sarah and Charles Reed, missionaries to Saudi Arabia, are tortured for their Christian faith and framed for cocaine use. Charles dies, and after returning to the U.S., Sarah's life insurance company refuses to compensate her for his death, citing his "addiction." Desperate for the means to raise her two children, she hires attorney Brad Carson, who seizes the opportunity to sue the nation of Saudi Arabia for their persecution of the Reeds. The resulting lawsuit ends up in the courtroom of the Hon. Cynthia Baker-Kline, a prochoice judge who had an earlier run-in with Carson over a prolife protester he represented. Despite opening the novel with a few stereotypes, Singer eventually smashes others, as in his depiction of Carson's legal secretary (who, with her overweight physique, pack-a-day cigarette habit and constant scowl is no Della Street). There's the requisite witnessing, but some suspense as to who does and doesn't convert to Christianity. The pacing would have been improved by some judicious pruning and tightening, but the story is compelling, and the reader is left guessing until the last chapter about the identity of a potential double-crossing informant. Legal thrillers are gaining ground in the evangelical Christian market, and this is an agreeable addition to the genre. (Oct.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Better than Grisham

    As a hard core John Grisham fan, I was skeptical when a friend told me that Randy Singer's books were even better. After I have read them, however, there is no doubt in my mind that Singer is fantastic author that doesn't have to use cursing or sex to get his point across.

    Dedicate Some Time!

    Plots twists heading every direction. Had trouble putting it down. Great to read such a well written suspense novel that doesn't rely on rough language to get the point across. Can't wait for Randy's next book.

    Litigation, romance headline legal thriller

    This debut novel is a compelling story -- at once a legal thriller and a love story. It also has a gripping social theme. After a missionary in Saudi Arabia is tortured to death, his widow seeks legal help to secure insurance benefits from his policy. Battle lines are pretty clear between heroes and villains, but attorney Brad Carson is not sure if it's his new paralegal, the law school beauty he's falling for, or his longtime office aide who's selling him out. It's a great read.

    EXCELLENT LEGAL THRILLER DEBUT!

    Two American missionaries are tortured and framed for selling and using cocaine in Saudi Arabia, by the Muttawa, the religious police. The husband is killed and his wife, Sarah, is denied his life insurance benefits. Now back in Virginia, Sarah seeks the help of charming attorney Brad Carson, and the cases against the leader of the Muttawa AND the nation of Saudi Arabia are on! Interesting supporting characters, including a sassy legal secretary, a tatooed paralegal, and a beautiful law student, will grab your attention as they evolve throughout this compelling storyline. Hopefully they will appear in later books. The plot twists will keep you guessing until the end, especially the identity of a double-crossing informant! As a bonus, this book contains no bad language and those familiar with the Chesapeake and Tidewater area will recognize references to a few landmarks. Anyone who enjoys legal thrillers will absolutely love this debut!

    Directed Verdict invites you into the life of the characters and leaves you intrigued with the work that God is doing in and through each of them. It combines the components of a best-selling legal thriller and a Christian novel about God's amazing grace and power. This book celebrates the lawyers who stand to serve this country and the Lord. Directed Verdict will take you into a story that is out of this world, yet, such a reality for those who serve God through missions in foreign lands! The premise seems straightforward, but Singer introduces numerous complications, keeping our interest and keeping things racing along. Mixing the fast-paced, intricate plotting, intriguing characters, sprinkled with humor, and with a touch of romance, Singer, creates a wonderful story. The courtroom maneuvers are masterful. The in-fighting and conniving are genuinely shrewd and nasty. The plot twists are believable. Ultimately, the spiritual applications to our modern day world are noteworthy.
    I recommend this book to anyone who likes legal thrillers and good novels that are fun escapes. If you like suspenseful, complicated plots, this book is for you. Randy Singer is not well known yet, with books as good as this one that will change.
    The book is a must read! Go ahead get comfortable and clear time in your schedule to read this book because you may have to do it all in one sitting!

    Little slow through the middle

    A great book, but I felt that it dragged through the middle section a bit. It had a great ending when all of the twists were revealed. A christian fiction about missionary's from Saudi Arabia that were caught and the husband killed. When the husband's life insurance company refuses to pay off the wife brings a law suit against the country of Saudi Arabia and the head of the secret police. The story tracks the people of the small law firm that takes the case and how they are all effected as the trail continues on. Very exciting ending!
