School Library JournalPreS-K—A farmer drives his tractor down a bumpy road through various seasons, gradually loading one cow, two donkeys, three pigs, four sheep, and five chickens onto his trailer. When his filled vehicle hits a stone, the grinning load shakes loose and all escape. By the time the farmer arrives home, he is greeted by all the critters. This tale is ideal for storytime with its rhyming text, fun sounds, and refrain, "Chug, chug, clank, clank, toot! It's a very busy day." This is a jolly read-aloud, and the accompanying CD with a jazzy version adds to the charm, with both an instrumental track and SteveSongs (of PBS fame) singing the text. In addition to a page of the music, the book's extras include a spread of farm vehicles with brief descriptions of their purposes and another of a dozen different types of crops, explaining when they're grown. Dobbins's text, with its bounty of information and fun, is well matched with Sim's cartoonlike, folk art illustrations in acrylics and pastels.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA
Children's Literature - Amanda LedbetterYoung readers will enjoy this simple story about one day in the life of a farmer. Told in first person, the farmer describes the animals that ride in his trailer as he drives his tractor. Each verse is repeated with a different animal, and the number of animals increases in counting book form. The repetitive nature of the story makes this book a great read-aloud, calling on listeners to predict the upcoming words. Sim's illustrations are in acrylics and pastels, and they resemble primitive Americana paintings, appropriate to the theme of the story. The font type is fun and informal, with lines of text flowing around the illustrations. Included with this book is a CD containing a sing-along of the story, as well as an instrumental only version so readers can sing the song for themselves. The melody line of the song is also provided in sheet music form at the end of the book. For further education on farm life, the book contains colorful two-page spreads on the types of machines used on a typical farm and the kinds of crops that many farms grow. Reviewer: Amanda Ledbetter

Driving My Tractor [With CD (Audio)] based on 0 ratings. 3 reviews.
My son got this book out from the library and now I am buying it for Christmas. The music is adorable, and I love the fun graphics of the books. My son is 4, and I only wish I knew about this book sooner!
I found this book 3 years ago, and have used it with my preschool classes ever since! It's a hit from toddlers up to age 5! It comes with a CD, and you can also find the official video on-line (free) by the publishers. The video puts the book to life! It's great!
My 3.5y/o son sang this at his pre-school program and that's when I found out about the book. I checked it out from the library and he is going to have a FIT when it has to go back so I'm buying him his own copy along with several others to have on hand for gifts of toddler boys. GREAT song/book! ( My 7y/o daughter even sings along too!)
